I strive to help individuals examine and remove the challenges that are causing them difficulties in their day-to-day lives and relationships. Current challenges may be due to earlier experiences that are continuing to contribute to unhelpful patterns of interactions and reactions. I primarily use a cognitive-behavioral approach to help clients who are experiencing anxiety , depression, and other “stuck” negative thoughts and feelings; I see therapy as a collaborative process for gaining tools and moving forward toward more positive experiences.

I will work with you to address concerns related to sexual and gender identities, coming out, ethical non-monogamy, polyamory, dating, infidelity, desire discrepancies, and performance anxiety .
Sex, identity, and relationships can be integral parts of our lives. However, shame, miscommunication, and other life stress might prevent us from having the connections we want. Although these frustrations may seem insurmountable at times, change is possible. Looking for a therapist is a positive first step. Whether you are looking to gain personal insight, develop coping strategies, or improve your relationships and sexual functioning, we can work together to achieve your goals. I work with individuals and couples. I am licensed in VA, DC, and MD and certified as a sex therapist by AASECT.

I support children, teenagers, and adults who are experiencing anxiety , depression, and who are often moving through identity development.
I offer clients a safe and non judgmental space to explore thoughts, emotions, and experiences. Sessions can be used to explore experiences in relationships, feelings of stress, desired changes, or symptoms associated with mental health. Clients who are interested in additional self-exploration can benefit from my talk-therapy approaches, as well as exploring emotions through the art making process. Art therapy is a creative option for clients who may feel stuck and can’t find the words to describe how they are feeling or for clients who desire visual and hands-on modes of processing.

You're a badass go-getter, motivated by working towards your life's goals, but something feels stuck or slows your progress. Your life is mostly together, but you're dealing with anxiety , low-self esteem, or negative self-talk pretty regularly. Maybe you feel like it's hard to form relationships with others around you. There's a chance social media makes you feel inadequate. Maybe you still feel or notice the effects of a trauma in your past. You've considered talking to someone about these things before, but therapy always seemed drastic or a little too extra. (I promise, it's not!) Email or call if this sounds like you!

My passion lies in working with individuals who are facing issues such as anxiety , depression, trauma, life transitions, relational conflict, behavioral issues, and self-esteem, among other areas.
I provide a safe and supportive environment where clients can be heard and empowered to explore, discover, understand, and transform their lives. Many of my clients come seeking clarity on why they feel the way they feel, why their actions aren’t aligning with the person they know they are, what’s getting in the way of their goals, and how they have established relationship patterns that do not serve them. I work with clients to create a space that invites creativity and curiosity to solve problems, alleviate symptoms, and look inward at how our ways of thinking, feeling and behaving may be constricting our freedom to achieve.

Close your eyes and imagine your life (or your child's life) as you wish it was. What is different about the life you are currently leading? Damaged relationships? Trauma? Anxiety ? Depression? Grief? It can be scary and difficult to navigate life stressors, challenges, losses, and disappointments. I have worked with children, teenagers, and adults for greater than 10 years to address the barriers of their past and present that are impacting their lives and keeping them from a healthier and more enjoyable future.

We often think of childhood as a time of simplicity, joy, curiosity, and play. Yet for many, it is a time of stress, trauma, anxiety , and/or anger. Impulsivity, attention difficulties, learning delays, anxiety , and aggression often impede success at school, disrupt family relationships, and hinder friendships. My goal, as a play therapist, is to assist your child in processing their conflicts and struggles to support balance and peace. By meeting your child in their world of play, they experience being seen and understood, while developing skills of self-regulation, communication, and confidence.

I have worked with individuals with a variety of diagnoses such as anxiety issues, depression and mood disorders, grief and loss, and relationship issues.
I believe as human beings that we all have times in our lives where we are struggling and feel stuck. This can stem from external factors such as major life changes and/or internal ones where our way of coping with things is no longer working. Therapy is the perfect opportunity to dive inward with a trained professional who can help you grow, implement healthy patterns, and find a sense of empowerment for change. As a licensed professional counselor, I will create an environment where you feel safe, validated, and heard.

I have extensive experience working with life's transitions, anxiety , depression, grief/loss, addictions, and trauma.
I am aware of the potential setbacks and implications of neglected substance abuse, mental health issues, and their impact if left untreated. While working in a variety of settings, I’ve seen first hand how they affect the individual, community, and the immediate family. I am fully committed to advocate for those in need of the highest quality of treatment services. I am a firm believer that when an individual is given the opportunity to tell his/her story and given a chance to heal and develop effective coping skills, they too, can find a road to restoration.

While life is inherently uncertain, some experiences can be exceptionally distracting, exhausting, or disorienting- leading to depression, anxiety , trauma, conflict, and exacerbated grief.
Successful psychotherapy can result in greater adaptability, resilience, creativity, and joy. Most of my clients present with challenges in their relationships, careers, health, and overall sense of self. I offer a customized treatment approach, derived from a broad range of training and experience, to increase the likelihood of successful outcomes. Specifically, I can help you use the past to inform the present, to glean insight needed to address existing obstacles and to create functional change in daily life. While psychotherapy is a serious endeavor, I tend to incorporate humor when it is helpful and appropriate.

By taking certain small steps we can rewire our brains to decrease anxiety and depression, thus finally allowing for more freedom and creativity.
A patient wrote this to me: "You are someone who knows the song in my heart, and could sing it back to me when I had forgotten the words." In my over 27 years of psychotherapy practice, I have learned several things: one is, in meeting with patients, to clear my mind (at least to try hard!) of all the theories and clinical orientations I have absorbed and to allow my emotions, mind, body, and considerable life experience to be present in our interactions. [Please note that I do NOT accept CareFirst BlueCHOICE, just PPO and Federal.]

Anxiety Therapists

What are the most common treatments for anxiety?

Talk therapy, particularly cognitive behavioral therapy, is the most common treatment for anxiety. Studies have shown it is equally effective as medication. Other popular forms of therapy are popular, depending on a patient’s experience. Exposure therapy, for instance, can be useful for people dealing with fears and phobias, or who have experienced traumatic events. Dialectical Behavioral Therapy may be useful for patients who need help with emotion regulation. Anxiolytic medications, like benzodiazepines, can also help with calming a person enough to focus on the skills they’ve learned, and physical exercise has been shown to help symptoms of anxiety across the board.

How long does therapy for anxiety take to work?

The amount of time needed to alleviate symptoms depends on the severity of a person’s condition. Some therapies may take 5-20 weekly sessions to show results. Anti-depressant medications typically take two to four weeks before a benefit is felt. Anti-anxiety medications are felt typically within 20-30 minutes. Medications are best used to offer a patient a better headspace in which to work on techniques learned in therapy. Exercise, improved sleep habits, and meditation are effective, but takes weeks or months to show results.

When should I seek treatment for anxiety?

Everyone feels anxious at times, but when anxiety causes disruption to your daily life, it may be time to seek help. Such disruption can be mental, physical, or both: having fear dominate your thoughts, avoiding situations or objects that bring on feelings of anxiety, or experiencing shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, or panic attacks. When these symptoms are recurrent and distressing, it may be time to talk to someone.

How effective is treatment for anxiety?

Treatment for anxiety has been shown to be moderately to highly effective, according to a large body of psychology studies and analyses. For some people, treatment using CBT or exposure therapy alone is effective. Others respond best to a combination of medication and therapy.
