Parent-Child Interaction Therapy is an evidence-based model for families with a child aged 2-6.
Being a child is a special time full of curiosity, exploration, and learning. It is also a time when your body is growing, language is developing, social skills are evolving, and your capacity to cope is a work in progress. It doesn’t take much to feel unsure, overwhelmed, stressed, or unseen. Struggles are expressed through emotional and behavioral distress - tantrums, defiance, dysregulation, difficulty with focus, transitions, separation, or withdrawal from others/school/activities. It can also show up as jealousy, attention-seeking, aggression, anxiety, depression, or hyperactivity. PCIT is specifically designed for this stage.

Here are some of the transitions I can help you with: Gender transition and all things queer; Neurodivergence - yours or a loved ones: Illness, death, and dying; Pregnancy and parenthood; Menopause; Navigating life with a narcissistic partner, parent, sibling, or other important person; Divorce and separation; Psychedelic integration; Young adulthood
Licensed in CA (in person/virtual) and VA (virtual). Transitions bring us face to face with the joys, anxieties, grief, and triumphs of change, and offer an opportunity for us to see where we might be stuck, lost, confused, or needing clarity or compassion. The way transitions manifest in your life can be informed by trauma, attachment styles, and the unique way your brain and temperament process the world around you. These can appear as depression, anxiety, obsessive thinking, dissociation, or other symptoms. But you’re more than a list of symptoms and diagnoses, and I can help you find relief and make meaning from your experience.

I am especially well-equipped to work with individuals seeking counseling due to trauma, abuse, relational issues, social skills training, parenting challenges, disordered eating, addiction, fear, and life transitions.
I believe the goal of therapy is for clients to gain personal insight and understanding of themselves. When individuals understand themselves, they are able to change the way they respond to situations and grow into their fullest potential. I use emotional focused and somatic techniques to guide clients to gain insight through experience. As a counselor, I help clients practice and experience mindfulness and other techniques for self-regulation. We don't have to be victims of our emotions or our past experiences. Through counseling, my aim is to walk with clients as they integrate past experiences with personal meaning and purpose.

Parenting Therapists

What does therapy for parenting look like?

Therapists may work with parents individually, together, or include the whole family to find solutions for the problems a parent faces. Many parent-based therapies work on a parent’s relationship with their children, problem-solving within the family, and analysis of family dynamics. Therapy conducted remotely by video may be helpful in allowing a therapist to observe how families interact in their own homes.

When should a parent seek therapy?

When behavioral problems begin to disrupt the healthy functioning of a family, it may be a good time to look into therapy. If parents find that children are acting out in school, have started using drugs or alcohol, have developed eating disorders, or other similar red flags, a therapist may be able to help.

How long does therapy take for parenting problems?

Depending on the severity of a family’s challenges and the type of treatment utilized, therapy for parenting can last from weeks to months. Cognitive behavioral therapy is a pragmatic therapy type that can be brief, most often ranging from between 5 and 20 sessions. Structural family therapy, which inspects family dynamics, often takes several months. Parent-child interaction therapy is typically shorter-term, lasting between 10 and 20 sessions. For any therapy, the duration will depend on the progress made and results realized.

Can therapy help parents dealing with burnout or stress?

Parenting is difficult. Parents may dismiss or conceal feelings of exhaustion, overwhelm, or escape ideation—imagining withdrawing from their parental obligations altogether. but left unattended, these feelings can have negative effects on the whole family. A therapist can help parents work on the skills they might need to better cope with the burdens of parenting and help them be the best parents they can be.
