Obsessive-Compulsive (OCD) Therapists in Potomac West, Alexandria, VA
I work with individuals who are experiencing anxiety and OCD by helping them gain self awareness, identify their values, and establish a healthy discomfort with their fears and uncertainty.
While at one point your energy, thoughtfulness and persistence served you and helped you to accomplish things, perhaps you've noticed these patterns and behaviors take on a life of their own. Now you might be more fearful, doubtful, and engaging in avoidance. What used to bring you joy is now being perceived as a chore or a threat. You want peace of mind and freedom to enjoy what's right in front of you without being consumed by all the what ifs and other worst case scenarios. You recognize that the anxiety that used to serve you is now being used against you and you're tired of it.

Do you find yourself struggling to understand or help with your child or teen's emotions or behaviors? Do you sometimes feel like what you’re doing is not enough? Children and teens are developing at a rapid and different pace than adults are. They have different ways of understanding their own world, expressing and managing emotions, and interacting with others. While at times, guardians may feel stuck, the child or teen may feel the same way, yet struggle to process and understand how they’re feeling. Without proper coping tools, support, and warmth, they may find themselves struggling further. This is where I can help.

Were you called "too sensitive" growing up? Do you feel exhausted, as if you've been carrying too much for too long? You might be a healer, caregiver, teacher, high achiever, or therapist yourself. You hold it together on the outside but feel burnt out or disconnected inside. You might pressure yourself, feeling like you "should" feel better. I specialize in working with highly sensitive people (HSPs) who are ready to heal trauma, regulate your nervous system, and feel more grounded, clear, and emotionally free. I help you feel safe enough to reconnect with your younger self and offer tools to shift unhelpful thoughts or patterns.

My goal in treatment is to help my clients find ways to overcome and develop through these experiences. In my approach, the client holds the knowledge and motivation to make the desired changes in one’s life, while the therapist is charged with helping the client find them.

Anxiety, OCD doubt loops, and ADHD overwhelm can leave high-functioning adults looking fine on the outside but stuck internally.
I prioritize change over theory. My work draws from CBT, ACT, and ERP, with Inference-Based CBT for persistent doubt and reassurance loops. We work on the mechanics of how uncertainty gets built so we can interrupt it at the source. The process is structured and direct. The goal is overhauling your Monday mornings, not just managing symptoms from a distance.

Your brain is like a computer, and if childhood experiences, relationships or trauma have entered negative "data" into your "memory", it can sabotage your best efforts to succeed. We will work to go after the information in your "hard drive" to change the way you view yourself, your relationships, and your world.

How long does OCD treatment take?
Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is often treated on a weekly or twice-weekly schedule, depending on symptom severity and the client’s preferences. Some clients may start to see a noticeable improvement in symptoms in as little as six weeks, but it’s also possible, especially in more severe cases, for treatment to take several months to a year before significant progress is made.
What happens if OCD is not treated?
Some people with OCD, especially those with mild symptoms, may find that they are able to adapt reasonably well to life with the condition, even if their symptoms never resolve completely. However, many people, particularly those whose symptoms are severe at the outset, find that their obsessions and compulsions grow more intrusive with time, making it harder to maintain relationships, hold down a job, or navigate the world successfully.
Are there medications for OCD?
Medication can be used to treat OCD. The class of drugs most often prescribed are selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, or SSRIs, which include fluvoxamine (under the brand name Luvox), fluoxetine (Prozac), and sertraline (Zoloft), among others. In cases of treatment-resistant OCD, other classes of medication, such as tricyclic antidepressants or atypical antipsychotics, may be prescribed. Medication is frequently used in conjunction with therapy.
Can OCD come back after treatment?
Yes. Major life transitions, periods of stress, or other factors can cause symptoms to return or, if they were never fully eradicated, to ramp back up in intensity. For some, these relapses are brief and do not require additional treatment; identifying specific triggers and practicing the skills learned in therapy can help speed their course. For others, returning to therapy for a brief period can help address the underlying stress and strengthen coping mechanisms.
