If only the image you have perfected projecting were true. Everyone seems to buy it; that you are as calm, confident, and competent as you portray yourself to be. Meanwhile, you walk around feeling like a little girl wearing her mother’s heels. The worst part is always worrying about being “found out” as the fraud that you know yourself to be. It makes it hard to be really emotionally available and honest in your relationships and you always end up feeling so alone. All the success in your professional life just makes you feel like you have that much more to lose when someone really sees what you are desperately trying to hide.

I believe that developing a supportive, collaborative relationship with my clients is key to healing and growth. I work with kids, teens, and adults, but most of my clients are young people struggling with anxiety, perfectionism, and stress related to being gifted or twice exceptional (2e) while living in a competitive community. I also provide private schools admissions testing, giftedness and 2e assessments, ADHD evaluations, learning disability assessments, and other psychological testing. I tailor the treatment and testing process to meet the specific needs of each person I work with.

Healing, change, and growth are possible. Whatever you may have experienced or be experiencing, no matter what imprints you may carry, it is never too late to begin again. Depression, anxiety, stress - these are all real things that are held in the body and mind. The experience of this weight can be painful and isolating, inhibiting you from living the life you imagined. My goal is to help clients find the tools they need to define and live their lives as a person they truly love, and, by extension, to build healthy connections with those around them.

Are you frustrated with how much you worry? Is your sadness causing you to lose motivation? Are you noticing dissatisfaction in your relationship? Anxiety, sadness and relationship problems often trigger one another. Anxiety and depression are exhausting. They drain you of your energy and sap you of joy. In addition, relationship problems can present anxiety and depression in ways you may have never experienced. You may begin to feel frustrated, irritable or even hopeless. Doing the most menial task may feel like a burden. You begin to feel like a burden.

Assessment and therapy can be useful ways to better understand one's strengths/challenges at each developmental stage. Students today can face an array of struggles from lack of motivation to anxiety/perfectionism. School-age children may encounter difficulties with learning and self-regulation in the classroom. Adolescents are figuring out who they are, while navigating the ever-present world of social media in a safe, healthy way. Adults typically strive to function at their best in numerous realms, often feeling unsuccessful or overwhelmed.

As a therapist with 27 years of experience in the mental health field, I have been inspired by the diversity of experiences and strengths of those I have had the pleasure to work with. We all go through challenging times in our lives in which we find ourselves discouraged. Exploring our situation offers the opportunity to learn, to grow, and to live life beautifully. Therapy does not change people; it enables them to discover their own resources so they can make the changes themselves. Together, we will focus on a clear purpose, taking small consistent steps toward change, and managing obstacles along the way.

How can I find a therapist in Potomac West, Alexandria?

Search for nearby therapists or counselors by inputting your city, town, or suburb; or zip code; or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or zip code into the search bar.

Learn more about how to find a therapist.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

What type of therapist is right for me?

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors. Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.
