Welcome! I'm an integrative therapist and work with teens and adults experiencing challenges related to trauma, grief and loss, anxiety, depression, identity exploration, intercultural experiences, and complex family and/or relationship dynamics. It can feel really overwhelming to navigate these challenges alone. Working with a therapist can create a caring, compassionate space in your life to explore your inner and outer worlds, nurture your resilience, and cultivate joy and healing.

Alexandria Place Therapy offers therapeutic services in Old Town Alexandria. Our clinicians have spent their careers working with children, adolescents, young adults and adults experiencing anxiety, depression, adjustment difficulties, trauma and loss. Collectively, we bring over thirty years of experience to our work and aim to offer help in vulnerable times. This is a difficult time in the world. We all need support and a safe space to be heard and to discover new tools and skills to move forward in a more wholistic way. I work in collaboration with clients, honoring that we each have the resources within us to move forward with intention and self compassion.

In my over 27 years of psychotherapy practice, I have learned several things: one is, in meeting with patients, to clear my mind (at least to try hard!) of all the theories and clinical orientations I have absorbed and to allow my emotions, mind, body, and considerable life experience to be present in our interactions. I believe in collaboration and offer a companioning approach in our sessions – with you as the expert on your own story. It is my honor to walk alongside clients through a strength-based approach to therapy – helping clients identify and amplify their own unique gifts. My experience working with individuals includes those referencing grief and loss, stress management, life transitions, interpersonal dynamics, anxiety, depression, PTSD, disruption of thoughts, feelings and emotions. I utilize an integrative approach by blending models of care to meet the client where they are and supporting improved well-being.

As a Clinical Social Worker, I have provided counseling services within various agencies since 2002. My work is focused on enhancing the emotional well-being of those who are experiencing combat trauma, grief and loss, domestic violence, PTSD, anxiety, depression, and childhood trauma. My training has afforded me with the opportunity to assist individuals and families with establishing a foundation for the long-term management of their mental health needs.

Discovering your passions, managing change and navigating daily stressors can be difficult. It is particularly difficult, if you are experiencing stress at home or work, struggling with unhealthy behaviors or dealing with unexpected life events. I work collaboratively with clients to determine their treatment goals and explore barriers that prevent them from reaching them. My aim is to help you process change while offering strategies that increase coping skills and challenge behaviors that disrupt your progress.

As parents, you establish the teaching, training and expectations for your child in the first 7 years of their life. After that, you live out what you set up. Parenting is one of the most rewarding and difficult journeys in a person's life and at times, it may become overwhelming. I provide parenting consultations, as well as, counseling, support and education to new and expectant parents.

Hello, I’m Susan! I absolutely love connecting with children, teens, and young adults and supporting them to experience happiness, achieve success, and feel hope for their futures. In our sessions, we will identify short- and long-term goals, engage in skill-building, and develop a roadmap of strategies and interventions that will support enhanced self-awareness, improved well-being, and the development of healthy connections with others.

I believe in a mind-body approach to mental wellness and I’m passionate about combining psychotherapy and mindfulness techniques to help individuals heal, grow, and achieve their goals. I create a safe and nonjudgmental space for clients to express their thoughts and feelings. I work with adults and adolescents and specialize in the treatment of anxiety, depression, & trauma. I also have experience working with individuals going through major life transitions, those living with brain injuries, and the military and veteran community.

I am a licensed clinical psychologist with expertise in cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), pediatric psychology, and family therapy. I work with children and families on a variety of issues, including anxiety, depression, attention disorders/executive dysfunction, stress, coping with medical illness, learning disabilities, neuropsychological challenges, and developmental issues. I also have extensive experience in conducting psychological and neuropsychological evaluations for children and adolescents with school difficulties, developmental problems, and other issues. Along with evaluation, I can assist with interpreting and implementing treatment plans and related recommendations in consultation with parents, teachers, and other professionals (e.g., medical doctors, speech-language therapists, tutors).

Building confident kids with social skills, advocating for the disabled with skills for employment, and strengthening family communications are the pillars of my passion. Helping children to cope and confidence for happiness, health, and healing can be answered with Play Therapy. Beginning and maintaining employment for individuals with disabilities can be intimidating. I provide support to adults with strategies to navigate through employment. Also, the home environment is first place where healthy family communication should begin through family counseling.

I have spent my career working with persons across the lifespan, providing individual, group, family, parent-child, and couples therapy. My therapeutic approach focuses on using your strengths to help you develop coping strategies for difficulties you are experiencing. Much of my work has been with trauma survivors, and I have witnessed and been humbled by the power of resiliency and posttraumatic growth.
