Grief
is a natural response to a
bereavement
or a
loss
of any kind, but the distress you understandably feel today need not be incapacitating or unnecessarily prolonged. My approach will help you come to terms with your new reality, while retaining a healthy and positive psychological relationship with the loved ones you have cherished, but who are now no longer physically present. We will work together to establish new strategies for living a fulfilling and joyful life - a life that can be continually enriched by the happy memories of times gone by. A life of gratitude, rather than regret.

I help kids, teens, and families who have been impacted by chronic or terminal illness, or the
loss
of a loved one. Throughout my experience working in a medical setting, I’ve seen firsthand the importance of expressing difficult experiences through art. Often, the deep, painful feelings of
grief
can’t be expressed through words. In art therapy, we don’t need words. I use my training and experience in art therapy and counseling to support you through these difficult life experiences.

I have advanced skills in treating depression, anxiety, trauma, relationship problems,

&

, and addictions.
My therapeutic relationship with you will quickly alleviate your emotional discomfort as well as help you grow as a person and develop new psychological abilities. I see your role as one in which you speak as freely as possibly. This is called “free-talk.” Important issues easily rise to the surface when we feel safe enough to talk freely about anything and everything. My job is first to listen and then to talk whenever I have a perspective that I believe will deepen your understanding of yourself. An effective therapeutic process brings about self-understanding that transforms your life and relationships.

Life doesn’t often go according to our plans. Unmet needs and expectations can leave deep and invisible scars. That doesn’t mean you’re broken, it means you’re human. I work with individuals to increase self-acceptance and self-awareness, build empathy, and improve the quality of their relationships. My hope is to support your journey to express, explore, and discover who you are and who you want to be.

Sometimes people wonder if therapy is for them. If you are depressed, anxious, troubled in your relationships, coping with
grief
, struggling with past or current trauma, feeling hopeless or angry, or just trying to understand yourself better, therapy may be able to assist you. I believe we all have the answers we need inside us, but sometimes it takes working with a neutral observer to find those answers. Together you and I will work toward increased understanding of and ways to cope with whatever problems you would like to discuss. Therapy isn't easy, but it can and often does help.

I will walk alongside you as a guide, allowing you therapeutic support and space to process feelings such as
grief
, sadness, or anxiety.
Have you have been feeling stuck to find an approach to healing that works for you? Do you hear about all the latest trends in therapy, and not know where to start in the search process? As a millennial, Northern Virginia native, mind-body focused, intuitive woman, I've been there in my own journey, and I do understand this challenge in today's world. I don’t believe there is just one way to heal, and there are often layers we put together over time that make the healing journey truly our own. I seek to empower teen and adult clients to find their own natural, innate gifts to heal through a collaborative therapeutic relationship.

Grief Therapists
How long does therapy take for grief?
There is no exact timeline for grief counseling. Some people may start to feel better after just a few sessions, while others may take months or longer to feel relief. Some specific approaches, including some types of CBT, may involve a set number of sessions, or therapy may be open-ended until the patient determines they are ready to wrap up. Just as there is no right or wrong way to grieve, there is no right or wrong way to seek therapy for grief.
When should you seek therapy for grief?
Many people mistakenly believe that their grief needs to be debilitating or all-encompassing to warrant therapy. This is not the case. While people who experience severe, prolonged grief—particularly those who are considering self-harm or engaging in unhealthy substance use—are especially likely to benefit from therapy, so too are people whose grief is less intense but still interfering with well-being or daily functioning. In practice, almost anyone struggling to process a loss could benefit from grief counseling.
Can grief be managed without therapy?
Oftentimes, yes. Grief is a near-universal part of being human, and many find that their grief, while profound, does not stop them from participating in day-to-day life and steadily eases over time without outside help. For others, however, the harsh pain of early grief persists for months or years or leaves them unable to function. This group is especially likely to benefit from seeing a therapist, who can guide them through their grief and help them reconnect with the world.
What happens if grief is left untreated?
Because grief does not in itself necessitate therapy, untreated grief will often resolve on its own. However, for some people—particularly those who would qualify for a diagnosis of prolonged grief disorder—untreated grief can be a source of seemingly endless pain or lead them to withdraw from the world. In such cases, treatment can be indispensable, as it can help an individual adapt to the loss and start living again.
