I believe each individual must be met where they are, with an approach intentionally tailored to their unique needs. The client-therapist relationship is essential for doing any substantive therapeutic work, & I treat that as a priority.
Even behaviors that may appear ineffective from the outside looking in usually have wisdom at their core. When a person is in pain, they generally want to feel better. It is imperative that I understand what it is that a person may need to feel better in reaction to, then identify alternative actions for meeting those needs in ways that don’t have negative repercussions.

Are you struggling with understanding yourself and emotions? Maybe you feel like you are going crazy? I have spent years helping people understand a variety of issues they face. The crux of my approach is simple - you, the client, are the focus. Cognitive-behavioral, mindfulness, and other experiential therapies round it out. I know modern research shows that mental illnesses and traumas are a very real 'disease' or 'injury'. If you fell out of a tree and broke your bone, you would likely go to an Urgent Care center and have a medical doctor reset and cast the bone. The same is true for mental illness and trauma.

If you’re feeling stuck in cycles you understand intellectually but can’t seem to change, you’re not failing—your nervous system may be doing its job a little too well. Many people I work with are navigating big life shifts, self-doubt, or patterns of self-sabotage rooted in earlier experiences. Therapy can help you slow things down, understand what’s driving these patterns, and reconnect with your ability to choose a different path forward.

Searching for a therapist is overwhelming. You want someone you can trust during what may be one of the most disorienting times of your life. Something feels off. Your thoughts won’t settle. You feel disconnected—from your body, your relationships, even from yourself. And in the middle of it all, you’re supposed to choose someone to talk to.
You’re not broken. But something in your life isn’t working the way it used to.

You don’t have to heal alone. Sometimes life changes in ways we never expected—an accident, a loss, a difficult experience at work, or another event that leaves you feeling shaken. Even when others may not see it as traumatic, the impact can stay with you and make daily life feel overwhelming. You might feel anxious, stuck, or unsure how to move forward. You don’t have to face that alone. Therapy can be a space where you feel safe, heard, supported, and understood while you begin to process what you’ve been through and move toward healing at your own pace.

Substance Use Therapists
How do substance and drug recovery or rehabilitation programs work?
In inpatient programs, individuals live in a facility with other clients in recovery; in outpatient programs, individuals reside at home. These facilities are staffed with healthcare professionals including physicians, nurses, psychologists, counselors, and psychotherapists. Staff often also includes people who have recovered themselves, serving as mentors and guides. These programs may use abstinence, harm reduction, detoxification, psychotherapy, and other methods.
How do 12-step programs combined with psychotherapy work?
Members of 12-step programs help each other reach abstinence and work to maintain it. These programs promote complete change in the individual’s emotional, mental, physical, and even spiritual perspectives. Some programs require that new members attend 90 meetings in 90 days. Many people do attend these programs in conjunction with their work in psychotherapy; the combination of therapy along with 12-step can be extremely effective.
How does harm reduction combined with psychotherapy work?
According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, harm reduction prevents death, injury, disease, overdose, and substance misuse. People who choose harm reduction for substance use reduce the amount of drugs they consume. It is not abstinence-based like a 12-step program, but combining harm reduction with psychotherapy proves to be effective for many people.
Are there specific medications for substance and drug use?
There are medications approved to treat substance use disorder—such as buprenorphine, methadone, naltrexone, and acamprosate. These medications do help people cope with substance use as well as avoid the problem of relapse. Naltrexone can help reduce cravings, methadone is an opioid medication used to treat severe pain, and acamprosate may help ease symptoms like poor sleep and anxious feelings.
