Relationships can be difficult, and the effect of relationship distress on you, your partner, and your family can be profound. I offer help for relational distress, specializing in couples counseling, and marriage and relationship therapy. My therapeutic work is guided by the idea that relational distress is couple specific, often presenting as a break-down in communication arising from difficulty in bringing one’s authentic self to the relationship. Addressing that difficulty can lead to a greater understanding of self, other and relationship, empowering partners to be in relationship in more positive, genuine, and satisfying ways.

As a marriage and family therapist my focus is always on the relationships in our life! Every individual is affected by others around them.
Life is a journey and along the way there are often circumstances that create great pain and trauma that often redirect us down the wrong path.If we try to ignore the pain it only gets worse & the cycle of dysfunction begins! I have learned that we all need help navigating though life's trials, and yet it takes a lot of inner strength to even ask! As a therapist my goal is to allow you to reach your greatest potential during this journey and gain the right tools to navigate through anything that comes in your path!

“When we deny our stories, they define us.  When we own our stories, we get to write a brave new ending.”  Brene Brown. This statement resinates in how I work with clients.  Owning your story allows you to stand in your own truth; owning your truths provides you power over them rather than allowing your pain, struggles and misconceptions power over you. Working together in a safe environment we identify and hone your strengths, as you shape your life into the story you envision and deserve, and you find peace in the midst of chaos.

I specialize in sexuality (porn, addiction, ED/impotence, orgasmic disorders, same-sex attraction, incest, infidelity), marriage counseling including narcissism issues, anxiety disorders (anxiety, OCD, PTSD, phobias), forgiveness, and childhood abuse.
Over the years, I have developed my gift of psychoanalysis which helps me to diagnose my patients in an accurate and easy to understand manner for them. Then we grieve together the past and implement interventions and boundaries for a healthy future. Psychotherapy is proven to be more enduring than drug therapy, and my approach towards treating my patients is to avoid medication where possible.

EFT research shows that 70-75% of couples move from marital distress to recovery and approximately 90% show significant improvements.
I provide counseling to individuals and couples in the Salt Lake City area. I work with my clients to identify issues clearly and help them to create lasting change. Once this change occurs, problems will be seen as opportunities, rather than failures. I am often told by my clients they feel a level of trust, acceptance and comfort that has been missing with other therapists. When working with individuals, I use acceptance and mindfulness based approaches to manage anxiety and other symptoms you may be experiencing. I will help you look at negative perceptions that may be holding you back from experiencing a fulfilling life.

Marriage Counseling Therapists

How does marriage counseling work?

Marriage counseling works by teaching couples concrete skills to communicate with one another and solve disagreements in healthy ways. A trained mental health professional works with both members of a couple to explore difficulties the couple may be having and helps them develop skills to address these matters. Couples who don’t have any difficulties but want to prepare for marriage may develop skills for the future.

How long does marriage counseling typically last?

Marriage counseling is a short-term form of therapy; the process may last between four and eight sessions. Other forms of relationship guidance from mental health professionals, such as couples therapy, are longer lasting, may focus on the past rather than just the present, and are tailored to the individual couple and their emotions, history, and patterns in the relationship. Couples therapy often lasts for 12 weeks or longer.

Is marriage counseling effective?

Marriage counseling helps many couples develop relationship skills that may not have been acquired or tested in a relationship; partners may be better able to communicate and address conflict following counseling. However, there are many different forms of marriage counseling, and this form of counseling does not have as strong an evidence base as other modalities such as couples therapy.

Is marriage counseling effective if only one partner wants to go?

Yes, marriage counseling can still be effective if one partner convinces the other to engage in the process. Of course, whether counseling is effective depends on the couple’s commitment to work on their relationship; however, the short-term, skills-based nature of marriage counseling makes it a relatively easy “ask” of a partner, and the hesitant individual may see its value once counseling begins.
