grief
.
It is my intention to create a safe place for healing, self-exploration, and transformation. I offer compassionate presence and deep listening as we work together through life's difficulties and challenges. I believe people are doing the best they can yet wish to find more accepting and meaningful approaches to healing and growing. Treatment is tailored to help individuals see their true selves more clearly and to identify workable methods to reach their life goals. The therapy relationship can be healing by providing understanding of how early experiences affect patterns of thinking, feeling, relating, and by creating new experiences of self and relationship.

I have a wide array of experience working with varying trauma responses including but not limited to: Flashbacks, Anxiety, Depression, Food Restriction, Insomnia, Isolation, Chronic Fear, Loneliness, Negative Self Beliefs, Chaotic Substance Use, Avoidance, Dissociation - Relational Stress, Anger, Hopelessness,
Grief
.
I practice primarily from a compassion-oriented perspective. In my practice, I embrace vulnerability and lean on the power of human connection. My approach to this work centers on the mind-body connection, nervous system awareness + relational equity as the most valuable components in healing from trauma. All of the biggest emotions are welcomed in the container we co-create. Trauma can create an imbalance in power dynamics and rigid options in our lives, so power-sharing + access to choice will be the anchor we often come back to.

It is a privilege for me to earn the trust of, and work with, clients who are dealing with medical challenges, mental illness or complicated
grief
.
Before becoming an LCSW I worked for many years as a medical assistant. My background and training in these fields helps me understand and guide patients / family members through illness and / or
grief
. I also have extensive experience helping people who are depressed or anxious. I believe that it is important to listen to clients and learn from them, rather than approaching their concerns as if I have all the answers. Together we can find ways for you, the client, to grow, cope with, and overcome stressors and difficulties in life.

Death
,
loss
, and
grief
are natural parts of life. But when
death
arrives suddenly and unexpectedly, such as with suicide, accident, or overdose, the overlap of the traumatic experience and the
grief
of the
loss
can overwhelm us. At such a time we can experience symptoms of PTSD (Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder). With PTSD, we may experience flash-backs, hypervigilance, increased startle reactions, and nightmares.

How long does therapy take for grief?
There is no exact timeline for grief counseling. Some people may start to feel better after just a few sessions, while others may take months or longer to feel relief. Some specific approaches, including some types of CBT, may involve a set number of sessions, or therapy may be open-ended until the patient determines they are ready to wrap up. Just as there is no right or wrong way to grieve, there is no right or wrong way to seek therapy for grief.
When should you seek therapy for grief?
Many people mistakenly believe that their grief needs to be debilitating or all-encompassing to warrant therapy. This is not the case. While people who experience severe, prolonged grief—particularly those who are considering self-harm or engaging in unhealthy substance use—are especially likely to benefit from therapy, so too are people whose grief is less intense but still interfering with well-being or daily functioning. In practice, almost anyone struggling to process a loss could benefit from grief counseling.
Can grief be managed without therapy?
Oftentimes, yes. Grief is a near-universal part of being human, and many find that their grief, while profound, does not stop them from participating in day-to-day life and steadily eases over time without outside help. For others, however, the harsh pain of early grief persists for months or years or leaves them unable to function. This group is especially likely to benefit from seeing a therapist, who can guide them through their grief and help them reconnect with the world.
What happens if grief is left untreated?
Because grief does not in itself necessitate therapy, untreated grief will often resolve on its own. However, for some people—particularly those who would qualify for a diagnosis of prolonged grief disorder—untreated grief can be a source of seemingly endless pain or lead them to withdraw from the world. In such cases, treatment can be indispensable, as it can help an individual adapt to the loss and start living again.
