I enjoy working with adults who are dealing with the after-effects of chronic
trauma
throughout childhood. This can mean high levels of emotional reactivity, intrusive memories of difficult past events, and difficulties in obtaining and maintaining important interpersonal relationships. My ideal client is looking for ways to feel safe and secure in the world and to, as Dr. Marsha Linehan would say, "build a life worth living." I also feel confident working with clients experiencing depression, anxiety and other interpersonal issues.

A history of
trauma
, including the lack of fulfillment of emotional needs, is what interferes with our ability for successful, intimate relationships.
As a result of my own personal and professional exploration over the last 40+ years, I work most effectively with individuals who have not succeeded in establishing and sustaining nourishing, satisfying, intimate, committed, relationships in their lives. At this stage of my career, I am interested in working with individuals or couples who want to enhance their capacity for meaningful, intimate relationships.

I have experience helping individuals with substance abuse and complex
trauma
within Veteran and homeless populations.
I enjoy working with individuals as they navigate life challenges. Life can make anyone feel stuck at times, I am here to work alongside you to identify potential directions. I hope to assist you in navigating thoughts, emotions, beliefs, relationships, circumstances, and patterns of behavior that have interfered with your sense of well-being. I help those I serve master boundaries and emotional regulation. I help individuals learn to manage anger or intense emotions in the present moment to react in ways that align with their goals or desired outcomes. I believe in the importance of highlighting your strengths in our work together.

Whether it's
trauma
,
PTSD
, anxiety, depression, low or no self-esteem, identity issues or utter shame and guilt, you have a chance to heal and be who you are, or whoever you want to become! YOU Got This!.
For the most part we are all walking around pretending to be okay and hoping our positive affirmations, daily meditations, gratitude journal entries and the annoying latest push-up challenge will finally pay off with the bliss, confidence and motivation we see in our imaginary future selves. When in reality we might be feeling the cliché, "Hot MESS", which I will say has a certain je ne sais quoi about it. Right? The truth is we all have a core self who wants to be healed and has the power to do it!Yet it is almost impossible to do without true Connection, Compassion and Curiosity of who we really are.

I am trained in
trauma
-focused approaches such as Brainspotting (A sub-category of EMDR), and frequently utilize a client-focused, strengths based, and holistic (mind-body connection) therapeutic approach in my clinical work.
The clientele I specialize in are those who struggle with depression, anxiety, body-image /self-esteem, disordered eating, and OCD. Most importantly, I work with those who struggle with showing themselves compassion and grace as they navigate the hardships that life often presents to them. The clients' primary goal is to create a life that brings them joy and happiness, as well as the self-confidence and knowingness that they can manage hardships and regain control in creating the life that they want.

often present when there has been developmental
trauma
.
Let me guess, you've been in therapy for years and nothing has helped much? You are not alone. Mental health treatment has failed clients who suffer from complex developmental
trauma
. This is the
trauma
that happened as a child and there was no escaping the day to day nightmare of not being kept safe. These clients do not benefit from traditional cognitive-behavioral treatment approaches and talk therapy. They likely have high levels of dissociation and a chronic sense of disconnection from themself and others. They have had to turn on themselves in order to survive the unimaginable. It is time to return home to yourself.

EMDR is a highly-researched and effective treatment for
trauma
and many other issues.
Oftentimes we find ourselves stuck in patterns that we do not like and that do not serve us. These patterns can cause extra suffering and stress, including problems in relationships, or less than ideal functioning at work and with other obligations. Typically, we have these patterns because of experiences in our past that need to be healed. As a certified EMDR therapist, EMDR is the primary modality I use to help clients grow, heal, and change. Through my work with clients, I have observed that EMDR is a highly effective tool in healing old wounds and reworking our patterns of interacting with others and the world.

CBT and Exposure and Response Prevention methods can be tailored to the needs of any individual seeking freedom from fears and compulsions. BioBehavioral Interventions is a practice based on the wonderful fact that you can change your brain chemistry with your behavior. This approach is successful with General Anxiety, Specific Phobias as well as Social Phobia, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, Panic Disorder and Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. I work with families and couples, who share in the distress of these often debilitating disorders. I have treated children as young as three, and adults as old as 89, and all ages in between.

Trauma and PTSD Therapists
When should I seek treatment for trauma?
Not everyone who undergoes trauma needs therapy to heal, but many do. If, after experiencing a traumatic event, you find yourself struggling with symptoms such as nightmares, dissociation, irritability, or emotional numbness—especially if these symptoms last more than a month and are severe enough to interfere with your daily functioning—you may benefit from seeking out therapy with a trauma-informed provider.
How long does trauma therapy take?
Different types of therapy for trauma unfold on different timelines. Prolonged exposure therapy and cognitive processing therapy, for example, each take about three months, while trauma-informed CBT may last anywhere from 8 to 25 sessions. Other approaches, especially those that are less structured or that incorporate elements from multiple modalities, may be more open-ended, though many patients report feeling better within the first few months of treatment.
What happens if trauma is left untreated?
Unaddressed trauma can have serious—even devastating—effects on relationships, career, and day-to-day functioning. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) can lead people to distrust or lash out at others, making it difficult to maintain intimate relationships; it can also trigger symptoms such as flashbacks or hyperreactivity that can interfere with a person’s ability to function effectively, personally and/or professionally. Some sufferers turn to drugs to find relief. Symptoms may lessen on their own with time, but there is no guarantee that PTSD will resolve on its own.
Can PTSD come back after treatment?
It is possible for PTSD symptoms to recur months or years after successful treatment. This is because, like most mental health disorders, it is not possible to “cure” PTSD, and stressful life events may cause symptoms to recur in even the most resilient individuals. There is no shame in re-experiencing PTSD symptoms nor in returning to therapy when such relapses occur; indeed, many forms of trauma therapy explicitly encourage periodic “maintenance sessions” to reinforce coping skills and ensure that symptoms stay manageable.
