Clinical Social Work/Therapist, LCSW, LMT, APP, CCP
I am a licensed clinical social worker with over 37 years’ experience. I am highly skilled in Mindfulness-based Cognitive Therapy, EMDR, Transpersonal Therapy, Guided Imagery, Gestalt Therapy and Existential Psychotherapy. My unique ability to bridge the traditional scientific healing model with alternative methods allows me to synthesize multiple methodologies in my approach for each client. I provide them with portable tools and methods to support their goals.
The choice of a therapist to partner with you on your healing journey is a very personal decision. Strict confidentiality is assured.
Are you feeling stuck? Has anxiety, depression, or stress begun to overwhelm you? Are you struggling in your relationships? Have you had traumatic experiences that are threatening your mental health and well being? Are you questioning your identity - personal, sexual, romantic, gender, or religious? Or are you looking to level up your skills, increase your personal growth, and finally become the person you want to be? These are just a few of the issues where I can offer you the support and the tools needed to create healthy, long-lasting change.
Drawing on a variety of psychotherapy approaches, I help individuals struggling with depression, anxiety, trauma, OCD, and ADHD gain new insights into their behaviors and symptoms. From this new perspective, we work together to find solutions, purpose, and happiness.
Clinical Social Work/Therapist, LCSW, MSW, CAC, MA
Feeling stuck! Free yourself starting with a phone call. No matter who you are and whatever the problem, I have trust in the process of change and believe that all people deserve to be treated holistically with safety, confidentiality and no judgement. From my experience, I have seen the therapeutic process lead so many to a better and happier way of living.
I invite you to experience a cooperative therapy relationship in which you have the freedom to be yourself, to be imperfect, to laugh, and to evolve. My practice focuses on helping you heal from experiences including childhood neglect, relational trauma, loss, and any situation that results in a feeling of overwhelm and an inability to cope. With a foundation in psychodynamic therapy, my clinical work integrates traditional talk therapy with techniques from memory reconsolidation involving mindfulness, somatic, and experiential approaches. I take an active stance in the therapy relationship; we will work together as a team.
As the somewhat relatable Bruce Springsteen once said, in therapy "you work to turn the ghosts that haunt you into ancestors who accompany you. That takes hard work and a lot of love, but it's the way we lessen the burdens our children have to carry." I consider my life's purpose to be to (try to) reduce suffering in the world by helping others heal emotional wounds and learn new ways of dealing with the inevitable difficulties of life. Through evidence-based and transformative therapies such as IFS and EMDR, I love helping people become more self-aware and compassionate towards themselves and those around them.
Given the current circumstances related to COVID-19, I am offering videoconferencing instead of in-person sessions. This is a difficult decision, but one that I believe is in the best interest of everyone. My experience has been that the first virtual session can be awkward, but the subsequent sessions are increasingly easier to do and adapt to.
You've been feeling overwhelmed and are experiencing guilt, shame, and regret. You desire to have a "healthy" relationship where you feel that your needs and desires are put first... yet you're noticing that you're repeating the same relationship patterns again and again. You know how to work hard and succeed... sometimes even being the best at what you do... yet you're feeling unfulfilled and and lonely. You question yourself frequently and you want to learn to trust yourself more than the opinions of others.
I deeply believe that we all have unique abilities and different ways of seeing the world, thus counseling does not offer a one-size-fits-all solution. I will join you in your journey of growth and self-understanding based on your individual needs. You will find me warm and supportive, and leave your sessions with a certainty that I listen and care. We each have depth and intuition-which can get buried by the stress, trauma, or grief. I am passionate in meeting you where you are at, while walking with you to re-connect with your "inner-voice."
Unlike many professionals who treat a range of issues, Dr. Barimany has cultivated a specialization in adult cognitive development. Human beings have fundamental needs for intra-personal and inter-personal happiness: the ability to perceive reality accurately, to know oneself, be in fulfilling relationships, and make healthy decisions. Dr. Barimany's work focuses on helping individuals, couples, and mental health professionals develop parts of the mind that are ripe for growth to improve the quality of life, cultivate professional growth, and find intrinsic freedom and happiness.
What is the meaning of your trauma? Has it robbed you of your trust, your self-esteem, unguarded intimacy? Do you struggle to connect with your partner? Are you searching to regain your power? Are you trying to find your identity, regain your sense of self? I have the courage to listen to your trauma, not avoid, not blame you. I have worked with over 500 adults moving forward from severe PTSD/trauma and Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD). I have extensive experience with sexual trauma, both childhood and adult, combat trauma, and situational/1st responder trauma.
We all get stuck. "Stuck" could mean: a miserable job; a tough relationship; or difficulty adjusting to life-changing news, and not knowing what to do next. Therapy is a great place to find help getting unstuck and regaining your life's momentum. I help my clients move on from stagnation and help them reach a place that they feel is healthy. Every experience is different and therapy is appropriately designed according to the client's concerns.
Choosing a therapist is an important and sometimes difficult decision. As a therapist, I offer careful, compassionate listening without judgment. We work together to explore a deeper understanding of yourself and of your relationships to others. We develop tools to help you work through and discard destructive patterns. You are welcome to call or email me with any unanswered questions you might have about therapy or my approach to therapy.
I work with adolescents and young adults ages 13-40 experiencing anxiety, depression, and troubled relationships. I help individuals learn skills that help them regulate emotions in order to improve social relationships and daily function. My approach is a relational style of conversation to help individuals feel safe and willing to share about personal struggles. We then work together to increase insight and self-awareness through identifying negative behavioral patterns and building from innate strengths which helps one’s ability to make changes that improve their overall quality of life.
Have you struggled with feeling good about yourself? How does your perception of yourself impact your life? Each of us have lived experiences that leave imprints on our lives sometimes impacting our ability to trust, and connect with ourselves and those around us. I aim to foster a space in therapy that invites room for curiosity, safety, and also bravery in order to encourage---growth, self-discovery and healing. I work with both young adults and adults who are experiencing never feeling enough, or have experienced: trauma, self-harming behaviors, eating disorders, body perception issues, perfectionism and negative self-perception.
I work with young children, adolescents, and adults who are experiencing mental health concerns, traumatic life events, and life challenges. I see adolescents and adults for psychotherapy, consultation, and assessment. I also see younger patients for psychological testing and assessment. My therapeutic work is guided by the idea that psychological distress is often related to habitual ways of perceiving and interacting with the world--ways that have protected and helped in the past, but now get in the way of living a more satisfying, enjoyable, and meaningful life. I am practical but also value thoroughness and depth. Whether it is something quite specific or a vague feeling that something is wrong, I would love to be in your corner.
I primarily focus on two practice areas: Working with survivors of serious trauma (combat or other military trauma, assault, natural disasters, accidents, etc.) who suffer from PTSD or other post-trauma issues, and working with adolescents and verbal children who are dealing with behavioral problems, anxiety issues (OCD, panic, etc.), or depression.
