Golden Horse Counseling exists because so many of us feel disconnected—from our bodies, our emotions, even our own stories—and don’t know why. As an EMDR Consultant and lifelong learner, I continually deepen my expertise so I can meet each client and fellow therapists exactly where they are. I draw on advanced training in EMDR, Structural dissociation, Deep Brain Reorienting, & Equine‑Assisted EMDR to inform every session. Here, we don’t “fix” problems; we open a safe, supportive space to explore, integrate, and transform. Together, you’ll rewrite your narrative, take hold of the reins, and gallop confidently into the next chapter.

One of my deepest held beliefs is that, in general, everyone is doing the best they can in life with what they currently believe to be true. Rather than feeling judged or ashamed of one's personal life struggles, people need to feel supported through being offered new ideas and by being reminded of their own inborn, unwavering worth. In my therapy practice, I strive to help others reconnect with that worth and with their own personal value system that their hearts know to be true. We are all students of life and we are all still learning.

Difficult life experiences resulted in times when I felt stuck. I was riddled with shame and guilt, and crippled with worry and fear. Then, I allowed myself to be vulnerable and met with a therapist. I had a profound experience in therapy. It was healing and helped me immensely. This led me to a lifelong calling to be of service. That is why I am here. I wish to be of service to you in your journey of self-discovery and personal growth.

I believe clients hold their own internal answers, though a therapeutic alliance is often needed to unlock them. As a trauma-informed therapist, I see how adverse childhood experiences create deep-seeded belief systems and a dysregulated nervous system. This survival mode makes life feel chaotic and unmanageable, leading to addiction and unhealthy coping mechanisms. I build trust through radical transparency and accountability, being upfront that reaching a regulated life requires immense hard work and commitment. I provide a steady, non-judgmental presence, helping clients navigate these roots to empower ever lasting change.

I love providing a space where humans can experience what belonging and being held in complete safety feels like. Whether processing difficult topics or healing through laughter, I create a container where that can interchange harmoniously. I value supporting clients in increasing the awareness of their thoughts, emotions + what is happening within their bodies - as a way to honor these sensations and metabolize their distress.

I am well trained in trauma, substance use, and OCD.
Do you struggle with racing thoughts that won’t stop? Feeling like the world is a bad place? or feeling constantly inadequate? Hi I’m Rachel! I help people start to feel calm, grounded, and at peace with the world. The diagnosis my clients deal with most often are OCD and PTSD. If you have experienced traumatic events or have obsessions and compulsions that just don’t stop, we might be a good fit. My clients tend to never feel relaxed. They say they never experience peace in relationships even when those relationships are good. They worry that if they aren't perfect all the time they will deserve the bad things that happen to them.

I am an Associate Marriage and Family Therapist and a Licensed Substance Use Disorder Counselor dedicated to helping adults, couples, and families enhance their lives and strengthen their relationships.
It is natural to feel lost and weighed down – life is an incredibly difficult journey, but you do not need to traverse it alone. Therapy is a safe harbor: a warm and collaborative space where you can find your compass and relieve your burdens. While the path to change can sometimes feel daunting and uncertain, there is healing and recovery on the horizon. By showing up as your authentic self and exploring new ways of overcoming your challenges between our visits, you will begin to rediscover your own strength. Together, we will help you move from a place of just “surviving” to a life where you feel empowered and whole again.

Substance Use Therapists
How do substance and drug recovery or rehabilitation programs work?
In inpatient programs, individuals live in a facility with other clients in recovery; in outpatient programs, individuals reside at home. These facilities are staffed with healthcare professionals including physicians, nurses, psychologists, counselors, and psychotherapists. Staff often also includes people who have recovered themselves, serving as mentors and guides. These programs may use abstinence, harm reduction, detoxification, psychotherapy, and other methods.

How do 12-step programs combined with psychotherapy work?
Members of 12-step programs help each other reach abstinence and work to maintain it. These programs promote complete change in the individual’s emotional, mental, physical, and even spiritual perspectives. Some programs require that new members attend 90 meetings in 90 days. Many people do attend these programs in conjunction with their work in psychotherapy; the combination of therapy along with 12-step can be extremely effective.

How does harm reduction combined with psychotherapy work?
According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, harm reduction prevents death, injury, disease, overdose, and substance misuse. People who choose harm reduction for substance use reduce the amount of drugs they consume. It is not abstinence-based like a 12-step program, but combining harm reduction with psychotherapy proves to be effective for many people.

Are there specific medications for substance and drug use?
There are medications approved to treat substance use disorder—such as buprenorphine, methadone, naltrexone, and acamprosate. These medications do help people cope with substance use as well as avoid the problem of relapse. Naltrexone can help reduce cravings, methadone is an opioid medication used to treat severe pain, and acamprosate may help ease symptoms like poor sleep and anxious feelings.
