Religious trauma. Spiritual abuse. Recovery from purity culture. For the past ten years, I’ve specialized in supporting women with complex trauma. In recent years, I’ve added a specialization in religious trauma. Like other forms of trauma, religious trauma often shows up as anxiety, depression, and relational struggles. I primarily work with women, but I’m also an affirming ally of the LGBTQ community. My goal is to help clients untangle the web of thoughts, feelings, and behaviors that keep them feeling stuck—and support them in reclaiming a sense of safety and self. Let's go deeper than symptom relief into real emotional healing.

Healing begins when you feel safe to show up fully as yourself—questions, emotions, contradictions and all. My work is centered around helping women, young adults, and faith-transitioning individuals make peace with their past, reconnect with their bodies, and move forward with greater clarity and self-trust. I specialize in working with trauma, body image, perfectionism, anxiety, and religious deconstruction. Many of my clients come to therapy feeling stuck between who they were told to be and who they’re becoming. My role is to walk alongside you as you untangle those old stories and build something more true and whole.

Physical tension, existential fears, mood swings, chronic stress, problematic habits and relationship patterns can all come from unresolved events (traumatic or otherwise). As long as these events remain unresolved, those struggles will continue. Maybe you've tried self-help books, coaches, or therapy before, but they felt like just another polite conversation or useful information that doesn't seem to actually spark change. You want to understand what's happening, why, and do something about it, not just be validated and change nothing.

Do you feel things deeply, but struggle to put words to what’s going on inside? Do body image concerns or relationship patterns leave you feeling not good enough? Do you notice yourself stuck in a cycle of people pleasing or putting your needs last? When emotions go unnamed, they quietly shape how you think, show up, and relate to others. Learning to understand what you’re feeling can help you break those patterns, build healthier boundaries, and feel more secure in yourself.

Navigating life isn't as easy as it looks sometimes. Depression, anxiety, and abuse are more common than people think. Family issues, partner issues, sudden behavioral changes, unexpected life adjustments, they all can have an impact on how we perceive life. Our perception often becomes our reality and sometimes our reality feels stuck. Rewriting your story can be a release from the past as much as writing a new chapter in life can be the change people seek. You have strengths to use against your limitations and parts of yourself that need attending.

I am proud of you for taking the next step toward getting help with this messy thing called life! Our life journeys can be extremely challenging to navigate, so finding someone to trust with our most vulnerable experiences can feel intimidating. As a wife and mother of 6 children (one of whom is in heaven), I have spent significant time learning how to put my oxygen mask on first so that I can help others understand their own anxiety, depression, trauma, grief, and relationship challenges. I would be honored to support you in your journey, approaching the elusive balance of emotional, somatic, mental, social, and spiritual growth.

Gestalt Therapists
What is gestalt therapy?
Gestalt therapy is based on the idea that to address unresolved negative feelings, emotions must be not only discussed but also actively expressed in the present moment. The term is from a German word meaning “whole,” and gestalt therapists believe that people should be considered whole entities made up of mind, body, and emotions. Gestalt sessions are rooted in the notion that a client’s total self must be discovered, explored, and confronted, so that they can take greater responsibility for themselves and their behavior, learn to satisfy their own needs while still respecting the needs of others, and reconnect with feelings they might otherwise deny.

How does gestalt therapy work?
Gestalt therapy sessions do not just involve talking with a therapist. Clients may take part in role-playing, re-enactment, or artistic exercises like drawing and painting, with the goal of becoming more aware of negative thought patterns that limit happiness. One common gestalt exercise is “the empty chair,” in which a client sits across from an empty chair representing a partner, relative, boss, or a part of themselves—and, with the therapist’s encouragement, improvises a dialog with it. The intention is to bring the emotions raised by past conflicts into the present and work through them in the moment.

How long does gestalt therapy last?
As with most forms of talk therapy, there is no set duration or end point for gestalt therapy; people who believe that they are making progress typically continue until they feel they’ve addressed the issues that had been holding them back. New patients should understand that it may take some time to become comfortable with gestalt exercises but once they do, they should expect sessions to extend for a number of months, typically spanning at least 12 sessions.

Does gestalt therapy work?
Gestalt therapy has generally been found to be as effective as other forms of talk therapy in helping people living with anxiety, depression, phobias, bipolar disorder, and substance use disorders, as well as helping individuals reduce conflict in relationships. Gestalt techniques, on their own or in combination with other therapies, can also be effective in managing physical ailments including ulcerative colitis, migraines, and back spasms. It should be noted that some people may have trouble adapting to gestalt therapy’s lack of formal structure or to a therapist’s close observations of their body language and emotions; others may struggle to commit to techniques that feel unnatural, like the empty chair exercise.
