I am all about play therapy ! It's surprising how fast children can be empowered through different play methods to feel confident managing problems, emotions and behavior. When children use their natural ability to play to access their inner world, they gain confidence and skills they didn't have before. I also work with teens, which includes talk therapy and expressive forms of therapy depending on needs.

I also love working with children and parents, and implement elements of play therapy in my practice.
I would love to help you on your path as you seek to find healing, feel hope, learn more about yourself, repair relationships, or just find more happiness and satisfaction in your life. Many problems that people face are situations that they feel are outside of their control. These situations can cause deep despair and hopelessness. One of my goals in therapy is to help you feel more empowered and in control of your life again.

Let me help you explore and heal experiences that are disrupting functioning in your daily life now. Working with kids in the foster care system I saw a continual theme. Their symptoms were about what had happened to them instead of their diagnosis. This drove me to explore trauma informed modalities and provide treatment for all ages who have experienced trauma. Exploring what happened as a reason behind actions and responses. I treat all ages but I have a dedicated play therapy space for children & teens and use an attachment focused lens. Clients often have the solution that works for them but just needs guidance to access it.

I draw from a variety of evidence-based approaches, including positive psychology, mindfulness, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, and experiential activities like art and play therapy .
My therapy practice is fueled by my core belief that each of us as human beings have innate worth as well as boundless potential for growth and joy. Sometimes we all experience challenges that make it difficult for us to feel that joy and live our lives the way we want to, and I believe that is where therapy can be helpful. My number one priority as a therapist is to create a space for clients to feel safe and heard while we embark on the journey towards change and healing together. I strive to offer real connection and a listening ear, as well as tools and skills to help clients reach their goals.

Counseling is a process where you and I as a therapist co-operate to discover the things that have kept you from living, and being the person you want to be. In order to help, I need to know about your situation and life in general. It is important that you be willing to talk frankly about your thoughts and feelings etc. This takes tremendous courage. As we discuss your needs, my job is to help you find the patterns, themes, contradictions, or things that are undiscovered within you and discover ways to increase your growth and happiness.

One saying that has been impactful for me is “life’s greatest battles are fought out daily in the silent chambers of the soul.” Each person has their own unique story, influenced by various factors. I love the beautiful and sacred opportunity to hold space for people to explore their silent chambers. I believe that with skillfull and caring guidance, pain and suffering can open the door to an ongoing discovery of deeper sweetness, meaning, and joy.

We all have a unique perspective of reality from our own lived experiences. We possess, develop, and utilize our strengths throughout these experiences. The meanings that we create are expressed in narratives we tell ourselves and others. Together people create networks of relationships as they share narratives and create experiences together. These networks of relationships can be a source of both constraint and strength. I strive for therapy to be a sanctuary place free of judgement, so people can express the multiple parts of themselves. I strive to meet people with curiosity, creativity, compassion, and a desire for connection.

Trauma is trauma, no matter how small. It may affect how you cope with life's daily stressors, how you develop and maintain relationships with others, and how you ultimately view yourself. My role is to help you better understand and discover your true self by bringing any shame that lies behind your trauma to the forefront of your life so that it can be replaced with self-compassion. My ultimate goal is to help you heal until you gain confidence in who you are and what you have been through.

Play Therapy

Who is play therapy for?

Play therapy is generally targeted to children between the ages of 3 and 11 who have social, emotional, or behavioral difficulties. Play therapy has also been found helpful for children who have experienced physical or emotional abuse or witnessed atrocities. Play therapy is also often recommended for children who are undergoing major medical procedures or who are suffering from chronic illness; many children’s hospitals are equipped to offer play therapy on-site. Play therapy is also sometimes used for adults; creative writing, music, and art are expressive forms that can all be adapted for therapeutic purposes.

Why do people need play therapy?

Children often do not have the language skills or words to know or to express what is troubling them. Yet they often spontaneously draw or use playthings to depict scenarios that reflect problems in their everyday life. Play therapy provides children with an array of objects and play situations to act out their feelings or experiences so that therapists can get a clear picture of what children might be struggling with and help them find solutions. In addition, play therapists are skilled at helping children understand their inner experience and find words for them, necessary steps toward helping children learn to control their own behavior and come up with solutions to problems they encounter.

What happens in play therapy?

A child enters a comfortable playroom where they are free to choose the objects they want to play with. The play therapist will typically observe how they play with the toys—whether a sandbox, puppets, dolls and action figures, trucks, costumes, drawing and painting materials, or more—because such play provides clues to a child’s family and social relationships, difficulties they are encountering in the world, and what going on inside themselves. Sometimes the therapist may ask the child to use the play objects to tell a story about their family. Using the same instruments of play, therapists can help children discover more advantageous ways of thinking and behaving.

What kinds of problems do play therapists treat?

Play therapy can help children who display destructive or self-destructive impulses; children who seem angry, sad, or fearful; children who experience frequent social, emotional, family, or school difficulty. Play therapy is often of value to children who have experienced a loss or distressing family experience, who are regularly exposed to family conflict, or who have been physically or emotionally abused. Play therapy can help children who are perpetrators of bullying as well as those who are targets of bullying. It helps children learn to identify their feelings, to express them in constructive ways, and to regulate them so they can get on with the business of development.

How long does play therapy last?

Play therapy sessions may last for 30 to 45 minutes, and they usually occur weekly for about 20 sessions. Each session is tailored to the individual child and the kinds of problems they are struggling with. Play that is highly repetitive often indicates a problem requiring further exploration. Therapists typically measure progress through session-to-session changes in play behavior.
