Sometimes parenting can be fraught with challenges, and knowing how best to help your child can be confusing. Whether it's behavior problems, anxiety, depression, educational issues, or chronic illness; these issues do have solutions. The guidance you receive should be from someone with the proper training, who utilizes research-based strategies, and resists the urge to rely solely on their "gut" in a treatment setting. This is the current standard in this modern age of psychological care, and combined with the right interpersonal fit, you and your child's efforts in treatment will be more likely to result in lasting change.

I understand how to help others struggling with depression, anxiety, ADHD, trauma, parenting , coupling, addiction, and other life stressors.
I believe that relationships play a key role in our development and success in life. I also believe that they can be challenging to navigate and painful. At other times, we may just feel stuck, overwhelmed, or upset and need a different perspective. This is where therapy can help. I know therapy can help because I have experienced it myself, and I have had the privilege of helping many others navigate through their own challenges in life. Effective therapy can be an anchor for us during life's storms. Therapy can be a safe place to heal and become a better version of yourself.

I specialize in working with individuals who are experiencing anxiety and depression in all areas of their lives. Anxiety and depression can affect our lives in so many ways such as: relationship struggles, intimacy, those seeking a feeling of security, wanting to feel trust, over/under achieving, parenting skills, and other emotional difficulties. We all store memories, experiences and emotions in our bodies. Which means, that it’s not just “all in your head”; rather, our bodies hold information we can use as well.

Parenting is hard! It is made even more difficult when challenging behaviors or behavior disorders are added to the mix. It can seem daunting sifting through all the advice and parenting styles out there. How do I respond to this behavior? How can I maintain a positive relationship without fueling this behavior? Why does my child act this way? What am I doing wrong? Why can't they just get along!

I have 11 years of total experience working with high risk adolescents who have struggled with addiction, anxiety based disorders, depression, PTSD and parent child relationship conflict. However, I also see couples, adults and have found enjoyment in helping parents learn better ways to work with their children who struggle considerably emotional distress. I believe that therapy is intended to locate the cause of distress rather than coping only. Proper treatment begins with proper diagnosis. People desire to find a way to get what they want in a healthy and appropriate way.

Parenting Therapists

What does therapy for parenting look like?

Therapists may work with parents individually, together, or include the whole family to find solutions for the problems a parent faces. Many parent-based therapies work on a parent’s relationship with their children, problem-solving within the family, and analysis of family dynamics. Therapy conducted remotely by video may be helpful in allowing a therapist to observe how families interact in their own homes.

When should a parent seek therapy?

When behavioral problems begin to disrupt the healthy functioning of a family, it may be a good time to look into therapy. If parents find that children are acting out in school, have started using drugs or alcohol, have developed eating disorders, or other similar red flags, a therapist may be able to help.

How long does therapy take for parenting problems?

Depending on the severity of a family’s challenges and the type of treatment utilized, therapy for parenting can last from weeks to months. Cognitive behavioral therapy is a pragmatic therapy type that can be brief, most often ranging from between 5 and 20 sessions. Structural family therapy, which inspects family dynamics, often takes several months. Parent-child interaction therapy is typically shorter-term, lasting between 10 and 20 sessions. For any therapy, the duration will depend on the progress made and results realized.

Can therapy help parents dealing with burnout or stress?

Parenting is difficult. Parents may dismiss or conceal feelings of exhaustion, overwhelm, or escape ideation—imagining withdrawing from their parental obligations altogether. but left unattended, these feelings can have negative effects on the whole family. A therapist can help parents work on the skills they might need to better cope with the burdens of parenting and help them be the best parents they can be.
