Through our work, my clients come to understand problematic patterns of relating within themselves and with others as I teach them mindfulness skills, emotion regulation, and healthy ways of connecting in a safe experiential therapy process.
I am a Licensed Clinical Psychologist in private practice since 2001. I care deeply about helping my clients work through challenges in their lives, with sensitivity and humor. Everyone has challenges but sometimes involving a mental health professional is helpful to produce needed or desired change. I take into account the influences of psychology, biology, culture, family context, and spiritual/religious considerations to find answers to your psychological and relationship questions/concerns. I help my clients find healing and new ways to see the world and strengthen their relationships with themselves and with others.

I also use a mindfulness based approach coupled with Dialectical Behavior Therapy to help lay the foundation for healthy skill building.
Distressing (traumatic) experiences can leave one feeling confused, alone and emotionally disconnected from self and others. As a trauma informed therapist I assist individuals in confronting, making sense of and resolving past traumatic experiences. I help my clients connect current, unhelpful behaviors, beliefs and attitudes to unresolved, lived experiences. I have over 10 years of clinical experience working with children, adolescence and adults. My areas of expertise include: trauma, anxiety and depressive disorders, maternal mental health (i.e. postpartum depression), grief and loss and issues of self-esteem.

I use EMDR, ACT, CBT, and mindfulness /compassion-based approaches.
"Between stimulus and response there is a space. In that space is our power to choose our response. In our response lies our growth and our freedom," (V. Frankl). My passion is helping disrupt the habitual autopilot of life in order to gain a sense of resiliency, purpose, and vitality. When experiencing burnout, acute/chronic stress, trauma, and/or chronic pain I work with you to restore balance in your life by processing stressors, trauma/triggers, and building in resources to increase resilience in the face of these barriers. This is achieved by working as a team: You are the expert of you and I bring the expertise of psychology.

I like to come at therapy kind of like I would a drummer at a jam session. I'm there to find a groove with another voice. I want to communicate with you and help you to open up and learn to express yourself. We will seek understanding first and then we will find a way to encourage healing and growth that is unique to you and builds a stronger identity. I am strengths-based and I like to find existing skills to help a client build a new way of thinking and interacting with their body. This is also a very effective way of beginning the process of healing symptoms of PTSD in conjunction with other evidence based trauma treatments.

Mindfulness-Based (MBCT) Therapists

How does mindfulness-based cognitive therapy work?

Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy originated in the work of John Kabat-Zinn of the University of Massachusetts Medical School. He developed mindfulness-based stress reduction, which is a technique found in yoga and meditation. MBCT is a combination of this type of stress reduction and cognitive behavioral therapy; it essentially quiets emotional distress through mindfulness, utilizing proper breathing and meditation. These techniques aim to bring the individual into the present moment when in a state of distress.

When do I know if I need treatment with mindfulness-based cognitive therapy?

If an individual’s mind is filled with emotional distress and general negativity, the person may feel trapped. A mindfulness-based cognitive therapist can help a person change their thinking patterns as well as their behavior through calm acceptance and compassion. This therapy can provide an individual with the coping skills needed for a healthier and more constructive life.

What should I expect from mindfulness-based cognitive therapy?

This therapy often takes place in group sessions. A therapist will work with the group as well as with each individual. Meditation and breathing exercises are core practices that aim to invite inquiry and discovery into a person’s troubled mental state. The objective is to identify and lessen negative thoughts and behaviors and move toward optimal health and productivity. The individual will see life in a more realistic way. This therapy is supportive, accepting, and warm.

Is mindfulness-based cognitive therapy effective?

Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy is evidence-based and effective. One study found that people with major depressive disorder have benefitted from this type of therapy; the person accepts their distressed thoughts and also moves into healthier patterns of thinking. This therapy also aims to move an individual away from automatic negative responses. This type of therapy can bring a person lifelong change, with higher levels of satisfaction, less stress, as well as positive emotional and behavioral habits.
