Our mission is to help dating, engaged, and newly married couples explore, evaluate, strengthen, and prepare their relationship for the most important commitment they will make. The research is clear. Couples who participate in some form of structured premarital education and/or counseling are more likely to have a stable and satisfying marriage compared to those who do not. The Center of Marriage Preparation has the most comprehensive, personalize premarital preparation program in Utah to assist couples in everything they need to know before they say, “I do.” We also work with married couples as well.

Marriage , couples, and family therapy is my focus, as I am passionate about helping couples with communication problems, premarital counseling, conflict, attachment issues, and emotional disconnection.
Each relationship's story has successes and struggles. I believe some of the most powerful personal healing happens in relationships since many wounds (e.g., mental, emotional, attachment, etc.) are also rooted in relationships. My efforts focus on accessing that healing by exploring underlying beliefs, wounds, and fears that get in the way of you feeling connected with yourself, your partner/spouse, and others in your life.

I am a licensed marriage and family therapist, and I have a PhD in human development and family studies.
I specialize in working with married couples and providing premarital education and counseling, Discernment Counseling, and single who are striving to form healthy romantic relationships. I have received specific and extensive training in working with couples. I find that couples struggle because partners within the relationship are too busy trying to protect themselves from emotional turmoil and pain that it is difficult to consider the ways to create safety for their partner. My goal is to help couples create an emotionally safer relationship.

I received my master’s degree in Marriage and Family Therapy from Brigham Young University in 2019 and am currently working on my PhD specializing in emotional abuse and neglect.
We all experience difficult times in life, and we all need connection through relationships. I believe therapy is one avenue to process and explore painful situations while working on improving relationships with partners, parents, children, etc. Our experiences impact how we communicate and perceive others’ messages.

I have particular specialization in marital and couples therapy, as well as extensive experience working with religious clients of LDS and other faith traditions who are struggling with conflicts between their sexual orientation and/or gender identity and their religious/spiritual beliefs and identity.
I believe humans are wired for connection and meaning and that most of our struggles in life are intimately tied to how we experience relationships with others or how we find purpose. I have worked for 15+ years in various capacities with individuals, couples, and families who have struggled with myriad issues, including anxiety, depression, marital distress and infidelity, sexual and religious identity conflicts, addiction, shame, poor coping mechanisms, and more. My focus is to guide clients in identifying patterns in their lives and relationships that are causing distress or keeping them from living in harmony with their goals.

Marriage Counseling Therapists

How does marriage counseling work?

Marriage counseling works by teaching couples concrete skills to communicate with one another and solve disagreements in healthy ways. A trained mental health professional works with both members of a couple to explore difficulties the couple may be having and helps them develop skills to address these matters. Couples who don’t have any difficulties but want to prepare for marriage may develop skills for the future.

How long does marriage counseling typically last?

Marriage counseling is a short-term form of therapy; the process may last between four and eight sessions. Other forms of relationship guidance from mental health professionals, such as couples therapy, are longer lasting, may focus on the past rather than just the present, and are tailored to the individual couple and their emotions, history, and patterns in the relationship. Couples therapy often lasts for 12 weeks or longer.

Is marriage counseling effective?

Marriage counseling helps many couples develop relationship skills that may not have been acquired or tested in a relationship; partners may be better able to communicate and address conflict following counseling. However, there are many different forms of marriage counseling, and this form of counseling does not have as strong an evidence base as other modalities such as couples therapy.

Is marriage counseling effective if only one partner wants to go?

Yes, marriage counseling can still be effective if one partner convinces the other to engage in the process. Of course, whether counseling is effective depends on the couple’s commitment to work on their relationship; however, the short-term, skills-based nature of marriage counseling makes it a relatively easy “ask” of a partner, and the hesitant individual may see its value once counseling begins.
