I specialize in family relationships, grief counseling, and personally managing our thoughts, feelings, and behaviors.
I see individuals that desire and are willing to work at creating better relationships and lives. Sometimes we may feel stuck; unable to control our emotions and thought processes. I bring hope and tools to help provide healing and growth. We get a clear picture and understanding of what we want the outcome of therapy to be. We come up with priorities to work on and then experience interventions that create awareness, understanding, skills, hope and motivation to do what works! We then do our homework. We continue in this process, making any adjustments, till we achieve our "healthier life"!

Over the past 11 years I have worked with children, adolescents, and adults in mental health and behavioral health settings helping with things like trauma, grief , and mood disorders.
One of my favorite quotes by Brené Brown says, "Shame corrodes the very part of us that believes we are capable of change." No matter what you've been through or where you are now, I strongly believe you have the power to heal and become the best version of yourself. When we go through a challenging or traumatic event, our sense of self can become tainted, we may feel lost, and we may even no longer view ourselves as powerful, strong, or courageous. It can be scary to navigate that alone.

As an adoptive parent of a child with RAD (Reactive Attachment Disorder) and suspected FASD (Fetal Alcohol Syndrome Disorder), for over 14 years, I have had a front-row seat to how trauma penetrates and impacts a person in every aspect of their life as well as those around them. Helping people make sense of their trauma and helping them gain back joy in their life is a passion of mine. I am passionate about helping children through the hard times in life, such as divorce, the loss of a loved one or school feeling really difficult. These stressors add to the overall stress of a family and make even smaller tasks harder.

Working with those feeling overwhelmed by perfectionism, grief , life changes, or a traumatic event is such important work. You might struggle with feeling tired and have an overwhelming sense of anxiety and/or depression. Those who have always felt strong and independent cannot understand why they are unable to do this one thing on their own - why they continue to feel so alone. Please know, it is totally okay to NOT be okay and that you don't need to go it alone.

We all want to find happiness and meaning in life, but there are often things that get in the way of accessing our natural ability to live a joyful, fulfilling life. If balance is hard to find, if thoughts or emotions are preventing you from being your true self, if you’re wanting to more fully enjoy the life you are living, counseling may be a good fit for you. Maybe you are in the throes of infertiility or adoption. Maybe you have experienced a pregnancy loss or the death of a baby. You might be struggling with anxiety or depression during pregnancy, postpartum, or motherhood. You may have had a traumatic birth experience.

Trauma affects us all, unfortunately for some, trauma can cause problems beyond the ability to cope. When triggered, the brain can get stuck in fight or flight mode, limiting one's ability to think rationally and function in daily life. Another part of living with the effects of trauma is dealing with the difficult and painful emotions which can cause problems in our relationships and can negatively impact our connections with others. Depression, anxiety, grief , anger, confusion, frustration, shame, and isolation can all be a result of unresolved trauma.

My experience spans many years working with anxiety, depression, OCD, addictions, personality disorders, eating disorders, profound grief / loss , single episode and complex PTSD.
My primary goal is to help restore the power of the individual, to the individual. It is difficult to create ourselves to our true self until we uncreate the thinking and believing that is causing our distress because "whatever we resist, persists." To empower those I work with to see acceptance as a possible way out of their distress by realizing their true control in any given situation. This begins to uncreate the old thinking and responses that lead to further distress. To help those heal to freedom by removing danger, not increasing it, by providing effective tools of creation through improved thought, word and action.

Grief Therapists

How long does therapy take for grief?

There is no exact timeline for grief counseling. Some people may start to feel better after just a few sessions, while others may take months or longer to feel relief. Some specific approaches, including some types of CBT, may involve a set number of sessions, or therapy may be open-ended until the patient determines they are ready to wrap up. Just as there is no right or wrong way to grieve, there is no right or wrong way to seek therapy for grief.

When should you seek therapy for grief?

Many people mistakenly believe that their grief needs to be debilitating or all-encompassing to warrant therapy. This is not the case. While people who experience severe, prolonged grief—particularly those who are considering self-harm or engaging in unhealthy substance use—are especially likely to benefit from therapy, so too are people whose grief is less intense but still interfering with well-being or daily functioning. In practice, almost anyone struggling to process a loss could benefit from grief counseling.

Can grief be managed without therapy?

Oftentimes, yes. Grief is a near-universal part of being human, and many find that their grief, while profound, does not stop them from participating in day-to-day life and steadily eases over time without outside help. For others, however, the harsh pain of early grief persists for months or years or leaves them unable to function. This group is especially likely to benefit from seeing a therapist, who can guide them through their grief and help them reconnect with the world.

What happens if grief is left untreated?

Because grief does not in itself necessitate therapy, untreated grief will often resolve on its own. However, for some people—particularly those who would qualify for a diagnosis of prolonged grief disorder—untreated grief can be a source of seemingly endless pain or lead them to withdraw from the world. In such cases, treatment can be indispensable, as it can help an individual adapt to the loss and start living again.
