We all see life through our own prism, with different shapes, colors and ideas. For example, what do you think of when you hear the name of my practice: Gray Matters Counseling? The brain?; life experience with gray hair for proof?; or the gray areas of your life? Life isn't always as simple as black and white.

In my 58+ years of life experience and 28+ years of work as a therapist, I have learned that life is hard and at times painful. That we at times endure great suffering, we get stuck, and unable to move forward on our life’s journey or unable to feel the connection to our Source, to life, to our relationships with others, or to find joy. This is common and universal in our life experience. There are things that we do, conditioned physical responses, unhealthy thought patterns and ruminating on story lines which can amplify our suffering, contribute to our being stuck and interfere with our ability to experience the joy of living.

Life isn’t easy, it can sometimes feel like you’ve been placed in a small boat and pushed out into the ocean. Relentless waves seem to never tire pushing you further out to the unknown. Therapy is the sail that can help you get to where you want to be. If you feel like you are broken beyond repair, nothing can be done to fix your relationship, or are feeling inadequate as a parent, I am here to help. I specialize in helping people navigate the stressors, anxieties, and trials of life to create lasting change resulting in peace, fulfillment, and hope.

Do you ever wonder how to make your life into the meaningful experience you know it could be? I love Aristotle's concept of “eudaimonia,” or “the good life.” Sometimes, our pursuit of the good life gets derailed by psychological challenges like anxiety or by the vicissitudes of life and uncertainty. I love working with clients to overcome anxiety in professional, performance, and personal areas of life. Whether it's navigating the workplace, doing your best in your sport, or better connecting with others, meaning and fulfillment and the good life can be within reach.

Undertaking a healing journey can often feel lonely and isolating. It’s understandable to hesitate to open up, fearing judgment, shame, or condemnation. I remember meeting a therapist seventeen years ago who offered me a safe space free from judgment. His genuine compassion made me realize that healing is possible and transformative. That experience ignited a passion for helping others feel safe, heard, and understood, no matter their struggles. This inspired me to shift my career path after earning my MBA and pursue a second Master’s in Marriage and Family Therapy. We're here to support you, providing compassion and understanding

My top priority is for each client to feel seen, understood, supported, and not alone. I work to facilitate a judgment-free space where people can explore their traumas, self esteem, and life experiences to better understand who they are, where they’ve come from, and where they want to be. My style of practice is one of openness and acceptance that includes the empathy to provide a difficult ‘push’ when necessary. Whether you are struggling with anxiety, depression, issues of self-worth, identity and self image, or environmental life stressors, it is my goal to help you feel secure in your journey towards healing.

Male Therapists

As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?

There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.

How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?

Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client.

Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?

Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with therapists of a specific gender. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.

Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?

Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
