If you are someone who is seeking answers to some persistent challenges and feel that you've tried all the things you know to do, consider therapy as a place to continue that process. Concrete help with a trusted professional, who uses an evidence-based, non-judgmental approach, may illuminate your patterns and processes and identify tools that you can use for a lifetime. Healing and understanding the past can positively impact relationships and mental health including depression, anxiety and panic that can include self-injury, suicidal ideation and dependencies on substances. I welcome all who seek help.

I help men get unstuck, effectively navigate through challenging transitions (divorce, life change, etc.), better manage symptoms of depression or anxiety, improve their relationships, and/or get back onto solid ground. Not to stereotype, but we men sometimes struggle to reach out for help (especially therapy). Yet we often thrive in partnership, in community, and when the road gets rough, research and experience show that we fare better if we don't go it alone. So, let's chat! I once heard that we should "talk about therapy like we talk about gong to the gym" - an exercise in strength. I like that.

Hi, my name is Spencer, thanks for stopping by and taking a look at my profile. Finding the right therapist can be tricky at times. Here's a bit about myself to help you see if we'd be a good fit. My main goal as a therapist is to help others live in congruence with themselves. I believe peace comes and shame is reduced when one is aligned with their personal values. A lot of different events can push us out of alignment, and therapy is great at getting us back on track. Areas I spend a lot of time in are: self esteem, substance abuse, relationships, men's/women's issues, life transitions, anxiety/depression.

I work well with people who are motivated to challenge their inner dialogue in an effort to grow and change their present reality. Depression, Anxiety, and Grief limit our perspectives. Achieving balance internally with thoughts and emotions can lead to a healthier sense of self, more fulfilling relationships, and a broader vision of what a positive future can hold. Attachment struggles hinder our ability to connect with others in a way that doesn't sacrifice our own identity. Boundaries, knowledge of emotional needs, and effective communication are the goals to adaptive attachment. We can address any of these areas in sessions.

Men's Issues Therapists

Is therapy for men different than it is for women?

Therapeutic treatments and types are the same for men as they are for women, with the same protocols followed and the same strategies employed. Discussing one’s feelings and emotions is an integral part of most therapies, and some men find doing so more challenging. Therapists can help clients through the process; some specialize in treating men for this reason.

How do you encourage a man to go to therapy?

It’s helpful to express your concern and love for the person while framing therapy as a tool for improving their life. Offering specific examples of how an individual’s behavior affected either himself or others should be done with compassion and with empathy. It may be useful to devise a game plan—breaking the process down into parts, such as finding a therapist, making appointments, and looking into insurance coverage.

How can men prepare for therapy?

Men can prepare for therapy by approaching the process with an open mind, being willing to talk about their challenges, and giving treatment the time to work. Before a session, an individual may want to reflect on how they’ve felt since the last session and what’s happened in their lives. It can be useful for men who struggle to recall their emotional states to write down notes between sessions about their response to a given event or how they were feeling at a particular time.

What should men know about the process of therapy?

One of the most common reasons men don’t seek therapy is the notion that there’s something wrong with them if they do. Men should know that just because they’re seeking therapy doesn’t mean they’re mentally ill or damaged in some way. In the same way people work on their bodies through exercise or a craft through practice, therapy can be a way to improve the mental and emotional skills needed to be productive and effective partners, employees, and people in all realms of life.
