Hi there! My name is Jake, I am a neurodivergent counselor who is passionate about working with my patients through a neurodivergent-affirming lens. I believe that, while living in a world designed for and by neurotypical people can be an intensely painful and difficult experience, that doesn't mean that there is anything "wrong" or "bad" about you as a person. Neurodivergent-affirming care means helping individuals navigate life with neurodivergency (learning ways to cope, strategies to manage, and building key life skills) while also working through the strengths inherently present within neurodiverse individuals.

Sometimes, in life, we get stuck and need another person to help us. We have remarkable intuition and resilience within each of us that can help us to face challenges and to grow. I believe that therapy helps us to tap into our innate, and creative ability to adjust to the world around us. Lasting change and healing is possible. I love meeting new people with a wide range of presenting concerns.

As a couples and sex therapist, I am deeply committed to understanding and addressing the intricate layers of human relationships. I work with couples and individuals whose past experiences with trauma, infidelity, sexual shame, and childhood wounds prevent them from having the romantic and sexual intimacy they long for. My work often centers on helping clients move from relational pain to personal and relational empowerment—fostering deeper honesty, emotional resilience in the face of relational distress, and respect for yourself and your partner.

Battling your brain? My clients want a specialist, understanding, healing, and a clear path forward. OCD expert, trauma, anxiety + depression, overlooked ADHD and autism. Primarily adults/teens. "How do you know my brain better than I do? It's only our 2nd session and we've done more than years with other therapists!" "Dr. Briggs is understanding and listens different than other therapists." "Wow, this was only our 1st session and I feel like we touched things I've been wanting to understand in years of therapy." "Oh my gosh, yes, that describes it exactly—I feel like I understand myself better right now than past therapies.”

You’ve worked hard to find professional success. You’ve built a life that looks good on paper. You’ve checked the boxes. You genuinely like the pieces of your life. And yet sometimes you feel lonely, worn down, burned out, or disconnected from yourself and the people around you. The pieces are all there, but somehow it’s not working. Having a big life and a big job sometimes feels like big success… and sometimes it just feels like too much to handle. I’ve been there, too, and sometimes it really helps to have somebody who has walked this road ready to walk with you.

All are welcome! I work the most with individuals and couples that are navigating multiple intersecting identities and mental health concerns. As a trans veteran, I find it easy to connect with members of the LGBTQ and veteran communities. I can help members navigate life and the nuances that come with those identities by drawing on experience, training, and education. Clients often find that not having to explain things that feel basic really makes therapy accessible. This baseline can help the navigation of trauma and PTSD to feel less dark and lonely.

Gestalt Therapists
What is gestalt therapy?
Gestalt therapy is based on the idea that to address unresolved negative feelings, emotions must be not only discussed but also actively expressed in the present moment. The term is from a German word meaning “whole,” and gestalt therapists believe that people should be considered whole entities made up of mind, body, and emotions. Gestalt sessions are rooted in the notion that a client’s total self must be discovered, explored, and confronted, so that they can take greater responsibility for themselves and their behavior, learn to satisfy their own needs while still respecting the needs of others, and reconnect with feelings they might otherwise deny.

How does gestalt therapy work?
Gestalt therapy sessions do not just involve talking with a therapist. Clients may take part in role-playing, re-enactment, or artistic exercises like drawing and painting, with the goal of becoming more aware of negative thought patterns that limit happiness. One common gestalt exercise is “the empty chair,” in which a client sits across from an empty chair representing a partner, relative, boss, or a part of themselves—and, with the therapist’s encouragement, improvises a dialog with it. The intention is to bring the emotions raised by past conflicts into the present and work through them in the moment.

How long does gestalt therapy last?
As with most forms of talk therapy, there is no set duration or end point for gestalt therapy; people who believe that they are making progress typically continue until they feel they’ve addressed the issues that had been holding them back. New patients should understand that it may take some time to become comfortable with gestalt exercises but once they do, they should expect sessions to extend for a number of months, typically spanning at least 12 sessions.

Does gestalt therapy work?
Gestalt therapy has generally been found to be as effective as other forms of talk therapy in helping people living with anxiety, depression, phobias, bipolar disorder, and substance use disorders, as well as helping individuals reduce conflict in relationships. Gestalt techniques, on their own or in combination with other therapies, can also be effective in managing physical ailments including ulcerative colitis, migraines, and back spasms. It should be noted that some people may have trouble adapting to gestalt therapy’s lack of formal structure or to a therapist’s close observations of their body language and emotions; others may struggle to commit to techniques that feel unnatural, like the empty chair exercise.
