I have over 25 years of helping adults, families with children and individuals with families who are facing dementia.
As a Licensed Clinical Social Worker with years of experience in providing therapeutic counseling in end-of-life situations. Through personal and professional experiences, I have developed a deep understanding of the challenges faced by families with declining loved ones. One day, I received a call from my dad letting me know that my mom could not move, and he needed help. When I arrived, she was on the floor crying extremely confused. My dad and I got her into the car, and to the hospital, which she was diagnosed with a stroke. They told me that when she would be stable she would need to go to a skilled nursing faciltiy.

In my mind, the ideal client is someone who has recognized that some aspect of their life is no longer working and is ready to take steps to restore balance. This person is seeking help to get their life back on track. I enjoy working with a variety of clients, including individuals, couples, and families. The people who seek counseling to validate that change is necessary, and who desire professional guidance to collaborate in identifying their natural strengths (or at least their potential capabilities) to overcome difficulties, tend to be goal-oriented. My hope is that my warm and inviting office atmosphere, and a safe space.

I've been a therapist for 11 years, but it didn't take me that long to learn that therapy is about what works for you. My priority is to make specific goals that address your concerns and often check to make sure you still feel like we're on the right track. I'm here to help you make the transition to living a fuller life, find healing, and meet your goals. Whether you have a history of trauma, depression, anxiety, an eating disorder, or just some skills to make life easier, I can help. I love having the opportunity to help you discover your best self and work through the experiences are challenging for you, past or present.

I don't know many people who are super excited to go to therapy so I try to make it as quick and solution focused as possible. Initially I try to focus on what they want their best future to look like. If at all possible we then work towards that. However, sometimes issues from the past prevent people from achieving that future and need to be addressed and so we would work on removing that as a barrier to achieving their best and brightest future.

The wounds that we suffer from are often amplified by the lack of a safe space to share our experiences and ask for support. Having experienced various life challenges, I noticed these safe spaces were difficult to find. Offering this support for others is what I value most.

Are you frustrated with conventional therapy approaches that don’t seem to go deep enough? Do you feel that you don't really have unresolved trauma, but are still feeling depressed, anxious, or stressed? If so, I may be the therapist for you. I believe the mind, body, and spirit are interconnected, and true healing comes from addressing all three. My approach combines conventional psychotherapy with whole-food nutrition and mind-body therapies like EMDR, EFT (tapping), and mindfulness. I call this nutritional psychotherapy.

Do you struggle with trauma or OCD? Hi, I’m Grace and I help people with difficult parents get past their childhoods. If your home life was chaotic or straight up disturbing and now you're a nervous perfectionist let's talk. My client's wish for emotional stability. They worry about worst case scenarios constantly. Their minds never calm down. But mostly they struggle with guilt and shame. Whatever the actual diagnosis is, they feel like they are never enough. They feel like everything is their fault. They look back on their childhood memories and cringe because they feel unbearable.

Dementia Therapists

Can dementia patients benefit from counseling?

Dementia patients can often benefit significantly from counseling. While neurologists typically treat dementia itself, counselors provide crucial emotional support for patients and their families. Therapists specializing in dementia can help clients navigate aging, end-of-life issues, social isolation, sleep challenges, and grief. They can also assist clients in adapting to the disease by addressing caregiving concerns and supporting family members. Counselors will often also collaborate with a patient's neurologist or other medical providers to manage dementia symptoms and medication needs.

How can you tell if someone has dementia or Alzheimer's?

To determine if someone has dementia or Alzheimer's disease, there are several signs and diagnostic methods that medical professionals use. Early signs of dementia often include memory loss, difficulty with problem-solving, and challenges in completing familiar tasks. Diagnosing dementia or Alzheimer's requires a comprehensive approach, as there is no single definitive test, and initial diagnosis can sometimes be difficult as symptoms tend to worsen progressively over time. To make a diagnosis, medical professionals typically use a combination of methods, including standardized questionnaires and cognitive tests to assess memory, attention, and problem-solving skills, psychiatric evaluations to understand mental health status, brain scans to look for physical changes in the brain, as well as other medical tests to rule out other conditions.

What are the first-line treatment options for Alzheimer’s disease?

There is no cure for Alzheimer's disease, but catching the disease in its early-to-moderate phases can be beneficial in order to initiate first-line treatments to help manage symptoms. Medications such as galantamine, rivastigmine, and donepezil are examples of cholinesterase inhibitors that are commonly prescribed for Alzheimer’s disease. In addition, working with a therapist or social worker can also often help patients with the disease address common behavioral and lifestyle concerns, such as anxiety, depression, irritability, sleep problems, social support, and housing changes.

When to seek treatment for Alzheimer’s?

It’s best to seek treatment at the first signs of Alzheimer's. Early warning signs of Alzheimer’s include memory problems, such as forgetting appointments or directions, as well as trouble concentrating, paying attention, retrieving words, and carrying out daily household tasks. An early diagnosis can help people slow the progression of the disease with medication and plan for the future in terms of housing, social/caregiving support, and finances.
