I have always believed in the power of human connection and as a counselor I offer a warm and genuine environment to my clients as they work through their challenges, begin to understand themselves better and to become more resilient. I also believe that a person’s thoughts affect their emotions, that past experiences impact present situations and the importance of living in the here and now. I enjoy working alongside my clients as they heal, grow and change. I work primarily from a person-centered approach and pull from a variety of counseling theories to personalize the therapy experience to the individual needs of each client.

I have extensive experience working with children, adolescents, and adults helping them cope in a healthy manner with life stressors and difficult life transitions with a specific focus in trauma therapy. Trauma therapy can include many things such as: seperation(s), divorce(s), grief/loss, adoption(s), navigating foster care, car accident(s), major life changes and much more. I believe therapy should be holistic, meaning there are many ways to do therapy, and every individual is unique. Each approach I use is intended to expand on the clients existing strengths using evidence-based interventions whenever possible.

The mountain of anxiety can seem overwhelming. Imagine standing on the top of that mountain, looking down at all that you have overcome. From the Pinnacle, you have the most beautiful view. A view you would have never seen had you not taken that first step to seek counsel from someone who will walk beside you, encourage you, and guide you along the way.

Hi, My name is Kassie. I studied at the University of Utah. I have worked in the mental health field for over a decade and I wouldn’t have it any other way. I believe relationships are key to having a meaningful, purposeful life. I enjoy working with teens, young adults and beyond with a hope of turning the hardest days into life lessons that instill wisdom to be shared. While pursuing my degree in social work, I discovered my passion for working with clients struggling with body image and disordered eating. I am a Certified Eating Disorder Specialist through IAEDP.

My passion for ending suffering in the world began when I was a little girl and my dad read to me the story of “The Little Match Girl” by Hans Christian Andersen. I can still see my little hands reaching out to that little girl who was hungry, cold, and forgotten. I have witnessed much suffering over the years which has deepened my desire to help others. I have worked with indigenous women in the jungles of Costa Rica and Guatemala, assisting them feed their children and empowering them through micro-loans. I have spent time on the streets of Birmingham helping the forgotten homeless, those suffering from AIDS, and drug addictions.

I love helping a person become their best version of themselves. Most people seeking counseling feel defeated. My strategies help them find hope and to develop new approaches to help them become powerful people with tangible skills to overcome the challenges in their lives so they can have joy and fulfillment. Ideally a client is ready to try new approaches to their life, to accept responsiblity for the consequences of their current behaviors, and is willing to risk failing, as each success is usually preceded by a few failed attempts.

It is difficult to reach out for support; I understand how uncomfortable and vulnerable it might make you feel. I strive to create a safe, comfortable, inclusive, and judgment-free environment that allows deep exploration into the issues that brought you here. Our uniqueness is something to be valued, and I adapt my approach to this belief. No cookie-cutter method works for all people or situations, so I embrace an eclectic approach to therapy where I can tailor treatment to your specific needs.

Female Therapists

Does it matter what gender my therapist is?

In general, this is not an important factor, as there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or ingrained beliefs about how people of different genders think and behave. Exploring the roots of such preferences and considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender truly matters to them.

Should I see a female therapist?

Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist, either because they believe that a woman will be able to relate to their specific challenges (for example, sexism in the workplace) or because they imagine feeling more comfortable disclosing sensitive information to a woman. Such beliefs may not turn out to be accurate, however, and adhering too rigidly to a gender preference can at times hinder a client from finding the best therapeutic match.

Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?

Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists—both men and women—may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.

How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?

It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
