I love helping a person become their best version of themselves. Most people seeking counseling feel defeated. My strategies help them find hope and to develop new approaches to help them become powerful people with tangible and deep changes in how they feel and in their beliefs about themselves so that they are living lives of joy and fulfillment. Ideally a client is ready to try new approaches to their life, is ready to get out of the constant cycle of overthinking, and is ready to take a journey deep inside where they can heal emotionally and physically, and emerge ready to truly LIVE.

I have completed the certification process for becoming a Certified Sex Addiction Therapist (CSAT), Certified Partner Trauma Therapist (CPTT), and my Level 1 Trauma Training using Internal Family Systems Therapy.
Colby is passionate about life and about helping others to discover that same passion. He recognizes that we all go through life experiences that shape and form us into who we are today. Through those experiences, we can become stuck, discouraged, overwhelmed, feeling helpless, and hopeless. This can keep us from being able to maximize our happiness and joy. Colby uses a combination of therapy modalities to help us understand why we are the way we are, come to accept who we are, and then challenge ourselves to become our best self through intrapersonal and interpersonal growth.

I work with clients who are struggling with trauma, PTSD, anxiety, depression or relationship issues that can be individually, couples or family dynamic based.
I believe that as we set goals, it's important to celebrate the small success stories along your path. As we develop our thoughts, feelings, and behaviors across our lives we question if they feel disruptive or wrong. We all face difficulties with barriers and stressors as we navigate life's complex systems but too often, we dismiss those feelings and struggle on. Taking an active approach is how we process our circumstances and gain back control for personal self-care, growth or happiness. By taking time to reflect on our own needs, you can focus on living a healthier and more fulfilling life with the use of therapy.

I am on the Supreme Court Roster for Mediators, trained in couples therapy with Gottman and utilize skill building and change of perception to improve lives.
Therapist focusing on trauma, skill building, and mediation. I believe mental health is simple, yet it can be frustrating because it is also complex. Too often we look for magical or quick fixes for problems when the solutions are very common. Usually it is a number of things that create the problem, not just one contributor and often our society treats the symptom not the cause. As a society we should be focusing on preventative health, getting in front of the problem, and not waiting until it has already occurred to seek help. Having said that... there is always a solution, it just may not be what you expected.

I am passionate about enhancing the physical connection between couples and helping individuals overcome unhealthy cultural, emotional or religious traumas that may be impacting their ability to feel fulfilled sexually.
I have no higher goal than helping you find and live as your authentic self. I believe that every good we associate with living—healthy relationships, personal fulfillment, cultivated happiness—is tied directly to our acceptance of who we are and who we can become. I am here to support you along your path to that kind of acceptance. I am a member of the LGBTQ Affirmative Therapists Guild of Utah and I am also working on my training as a certified sex therapist and a Ph.D in clinical sexology. I offer both a judgement-free space and the tools to help you work through whatever difficulties life may have brought across your path.

Couples Counseling Therapists

Does couples counseling work?

Research shows that couples counseling is effective; it can reduce relationship distress and improve emotional awareness, communication, empathy, intimacy, and overall relationship satisfaction. For example, emotionally focused therapy was found to be effective for about 75 percent of couples, and those benefits lasted at least two years.

When should a couple seek counseling?

Couples can benefit from counseling if they consistently struggle in their relationship. They may have lost the ability to communicate effectively, become entrenched in harmful patterns, begun to fight more than usual, broken the other’s trust, suffered from a mental or physical illness, or faced any number of other challenges. Many therapists offer free consultations, so if a couple isn’t sure whether therapy is necessary, asking directly can provide clarity.

How can I get my partner to go to couples therapy?

The decision to seek couples therapy is often driven by one partner, who then convinces the other to participate. When discussing the idea, the initiator should be direct and assertive. They can state the problems they see and explain how the relationship would benefit from therapy. In more serious cases, they can also explain how their relationship may suffer without making any changes or seeking professional help.

How does a couple prepare for couples counseling?

The anticipation of beginning couples counseling can be difficult—sometimes more difficult than the first session itself. Taking a few moments to reflect can allay those concerns: What are the current challenges? When and how did they begin? What do they want the relationship to look like in the future? Reflecting on these questions can help individuals or couples articulate their goals. Of course, the therapist will also ask questions and guide couples through the process.
