I specialize in treating trauma, addictions, eating disorders, womens issues and teens.
I love helping a person become their best version of themselves. Most people seeking counseling feel defeated. My strategies help them find hope and to develop new approaches to help them become powerful people with tangible and deep changes in how they feel and in their beliefs about themselves so that they are living lives of joy and fulfillment. Ideally a client is ready to try new approaches to their life, is ready to get out of the constant cycle of overthinking, and is ready to take a journey deep inside where they can heal emotionally and physically, and emerge ready to truly LIVE.

After graduation I spent a year working in residential treatment helping teens with severe Anxiety and OCD.
Feeling stuck? Like things aren’t changing? Wondering if your relationship with your spouse or partner will ever improve or if you will just continue in the same cyclical patterns? You might be feeling lonelier than ever as you wrestle with these questions quietly in your heart. You wonder who you can talk to as everyone around you seems to be biased in someway. You know you need a space to think your own thoughts and figure this out for yourself. Or perhaps you struggle with crippling anxiety that has lead to some avoidant behaviors. Either way, you know you want to regain your confidence and feel better.

I strongly believe that the foundation to healing happens through acquiring the ability to become grounded and centered. This is key in our getting on the other side of our anxiety, shame, depression, or whatever our personal struggles may be. I am certified in EMDR and find the approach effective as it allows the element of choice and the availability of insight not often found in traditional therapeutic approaches. I am a strong believer in the client therapist relationship as being key to success in therapy.

I’m Dr. Brian Hansen — a psychologist, executive coach, and musician. For more than a decade, I’ve worked with people facing trauma, anxiety, depression, ADHD, OCD, parenting challenges, and the complicated struggles that come with identity, faith, and relationships. My approach is practical but deeply personal. I draw from cognitive and behavioral tools, existential exploration, and creative practices like music, writing, and art. I believe healing isn’t one-size-fits-all — it’s a mix of science, grit, and honest connection. Teaching and public speaking are parts of my work I love, because they let me bring humor and authenticity.

As a therapist, I began my journey supporting adolescent girls in residential treatment.
Through my own journey of self-discovery, I've learned to navigate the ups and downs of life with more grace and self-compassion. I've discovered the transformative power of mindfulness, the importance of nourishing my body and mind, and the profound impact of living authentically.

With experience across diverse populations—including individuals, couples, and adolescents—I maintain a culturally competent perspective.
I find value in helping individuals who are motivated to improve their mental health and navigate daily struggles. While everyone faces unique challenges, many of our needs, goals, and issues can be addressed with simple life changes. I commonly work with individuals navigating their unique mental health struggles, along with parenting, energy and motivation, generational trauma, compulsive pornography use, and manic/depressive episodes. A hopeful outlook and a willingness to learn are crucial for making progress. I value clients who can practice patience and extend grace to themselves as they work through difficult feelings.

FAQ - Teenage and Adolescent Therapists
What does therapy for teenagers look like?
When a therapist works with a teenager, the pair will talk about what the teen is struggling with and explore solutions, which may involve interpersonal skills, coping strategies, medication, or lifestyle changes related to sleep, diet, and exercise. Different therapists employ different modalities, but most involve a combination of conversation and skill building.

How long does therapy for teenagers generally take to work?
There’s variability in teenagers’ experiences and challenges; some may begin to improve from therapy within a few weeks while others may take several months or longer. Teens can discuss their progress with their therapist periodically to assess how they’re improving and any changes to the treatment plan that could potentially accelerate that progress.

How do you encourage a teenager to go to therapy?
It’s helpful to express your concern and love while framing therapy as an opportunity to explore a tool that could help improve their life; just like they practice baseball or dance, now they can practice their emotional skills. Give your teen control over the process where you can—maybe by weighing in on choice of therapist and signaling that therapy involves confidentiality, so a parent need not know all that is discussed in sessions.

How do you prepare teens for therapy?
You can prepare your teenager for therapy by describing what the process will look like and setting expectations for timeline, if requested. You can explain that the first session may begin with an assessment phase, that they can describe their experiences but that the therapist will ask questions too, and that it may take time to feel comfortable opening up. Ask how they’re feeling about the process and answer any questions calmly and supportively.
