I know finding a good therapist can be challenging. Without a direct referral, you may feel you don't have a clear direction. Since 1987 I have helped others overcome challenges in order to live a happier, more fulfilling life. Here is one client's experience ... "I needed help, hope and healing ... Dr. Steven Chen's congenial manner and professional expertise created an atmosphere that assisted my healing and wholeness."

The relationship between a therapist and client is one of the most important parts of the healing process. I focus on creating safety and trust in a supportive therapeutic environment. Clients who are seeking deeper understanding of themselves through verbal and emotional processing, skill building, insight development, goal achieving, identity strengthening, and integration of the self, tend to be a good fit. I have been practicing for 25 years helping individuals as a Licensed Clinical Psychologist and a Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor. Feel free to reach out to me to set up a time for a free 15 minute consultation.

Anxious perfectionism shows up as perpetual shame, guilt, and self-punishment. No matter how hard you try, you're always falling short. It's exhausting, but you don't really know how to relax and probably don't sleep welll. Maybe you're a grown-up "gifted and talented" kid, or the child of immigrants, or the sibling who had to keep it together. Anxious perfectionism may also show up as body tension, severe procrastination and indecision, and difficulty with boundaries and people-pleasing. Perfectionists don't do things perfectly—they feel like they ALWAYS have to do better, and they can’t be happy until they get there.

Few people see the private cost of being capable. They don't see the mental negotiations required to start simple tasks. They don't see the unfinished ideas, the forgotten obligations, the hours lost to distraction, or the constant effort it takes to keep life from unraveling. They see the degree, the career, the business, the responsibilities you've managed to carry. What they don't see is how close to burnout you've become carrying them. Many of my clients are high-achieving professionals, entrepreneurs, healthcare workers, and adults who have recently discovered they may have ADHD.

Process your pain so you can begin functioning and living your best life.
SEE flyer in profile. Currently accepting clients for June-July 2026 Women's Trauma Intensive Program! (note: I am not providing intakes for new individual therapy at this time) You may find yourself in a state of overwhelm that amps you up or shuts you down. It's quite possible you armor up on the outside while feeling messy on the inside. If only others knew how dreadfully stuck, confused, and exhausted you feel. Part of you wants to let others “in”, yet it is hard to trust. Multiple stressors may be weighing heavy on you. Genuine connection and support feels unreachable.

Physical tension, existential fears, mood swings, chronic stress, problematic habits and relationship patterns can all come from unresolved events (traumatic or otherwise). As long as these events remain unresolved, those struggles will continue. Maybe you've tried self-help books, coaches, or therapy before, but they felt like just another polite conversation or useful information that doesn't seem to actually spark change. You want to understand what's happening, why, and do something about it, not just be validated and change nothing.

Counseling isn’t about making problems disappear—it’s about learning how to be with discomfort in healthier ways, building practical coping skills, becoming more confident communicators, and growing into the person you want to be. My approach blends cognitive and somatic work, meaning we’ll explore your experiences both intellectually and emotionally, while also tuning into how your body holds and responds to stress.

I prioritize trauma survivors (women & men) and women recovering from anxiety, chronic pain or narcissistic abuse.
I deliver my strongest results for high-achieving professionals, most often women and niche service providers, navigating complex, male-dominated transactional industries. You have built a strong public persona to survive in those spaces, but at what cost? My practice offers a rare dynamic: a formidable, safe male presence. Leveraging my background in Law (JD) alongside clinical mastery, our sessions are a haven of discretion where you can drop the performance. We don't dismantle your armor; we restore the woman behind the armor who is tired of carrying the emotional load for others who can't appreciate her needs.

Many individuals first come to my office feeling “stuck in the muck”, overwhelmed, burdened, hurt or alone, while others are seeking a witness to their pain and suffering, are in a state of immense life changes, or are experiencing challenges after surviving a traumatic event or a lifetime of traumatic exposure.
From the very first session, we learn and practice tangible takeaway skills for coping and thriving outside the therapy room. These skills are unique to you, as I am trained in multiple modalities to get us there. Particularly, I find mind-body approaches instrumental in healing trauma via a “bottom up” approach.
