In the journey into adult life, there are inherent pressures associated with child development, including anxiety and the struggles with self-image. I entered the mental health field because I can empathize with these pressures and wanted to help others experiencing similar difficulties. I enjoyed being a support system to family and peers; also feeling that a key component to an effective support system is guidance to discover solutions, I translated that passion into my adult life.

I have experience in many specialty areas, including general anxiety and depression, perinatal mental health (for both men and women), infertility support, OCD, trauma, and navigating major life transitions.
I can help you reconnect with yourself and find the balance that lets you thrive as the best version of you! Many of my clients come to me feeling like they’ve lost their identity while juggling the demands of family, work, and societal expectations. They put so much pressure on themselves to be perfect that it leads to anxiety and depression. It's lonely and isolating. I am here to show you that there is hope and meaning in your future. The cycle can be reversed, and you may be surprised how capable and incredible you are with the support of a caring therapist like me.

Struggling with anxiety, burnout, depression, or trauma can make it hard to see your worth, but change is possible. I help people reconnect with themselves and build fulfilling lives, especially those impacted by stigma around mental health or neurodivergence. I enjoy working with clients who feel therapy hasn’t worked in the past, helping them find approaches that actually fit and make a difference.

Wait lists are frustrating! Immediate openings. I'm a Utah-Licensed CMHC in good standing, with 20+ years in the field. Experience includes depressive, anxious, psychotic, and mood-related disorders, and couples'. I also see people with job-related stress/goals, in crisis, and with trauma, grief, and in substance recovery. I also do consultations for people with family on the Autism Spectrum or with a mental illness. I know the mental health system in our area, and it can be difficult to navigate. I also have a workshop that is extremely useful for personal and workplace relationships! Some groups have been SO fun and hilarious!

My 1st priority in therapy is creating an inviting space in which my clients feel safe and comfortable. I hate going to the doctor or the dentist and feeling judged or anxious about what they will think about me. I strive to help my clients in never experiencing these thoughts or feelings when entering my office. Second, my goal is to create a space for my clients to work towards their desires and goals in therapy with a task-oriented approach. I believe this assists the client in effectively measuring their progress towards their own goals in therapy. Tailoring each session towards the client's individual goals and needs is my goal

I often work with clients struggling with depression, anxiety, trauma history, PTSD, OCD, personality disorders, and autism spectrum disorder.
My name is Shelby Nielson, and I am a licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor. The approach that I take in therapy is to look at my clients from a strengths-based perspective. My focus is to work with people and enable them to be able to find the best versions of themselves. The first step I take in therapy is to engage a client from a person-centered approach to enable a strong therapeutic relationship. In building this kind of rapport with individuals we then can explore the effective theoretical approaches and techniques that can work for them.

Obsessive-Compulsive (OCD) Therapists
How long does OCD treatment take?
Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is often treated on a weekly or twice-weekly schedule, depending on symptom severity and the client’s preferences. Some clients may start to see a noticeable improvement in symptoms in as little as six weeks, but it’s also possible, especially in more severe cases, for treatment to take several months to a year before significant progress is made.

What happens if OCD is not treated?
Some people with OCD, especially those with mild symptoms, may find that they are able to adapt reasonably well to life with the condition, even if their symptoms never resolve completely. However, many people, particularly those whose symptoms are severe at the outset, find that their obsessions and compulsions grow more intrusive with time, making it harder to maintain relationships, hold down a job, or navigate the world successfully.

Are there medications for OCD?
Medication can be used to treat OCD. The class of drugs most often prescribed are selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, or SSRIs, which include fluvoxamine (under the brand name Luvox), fluoxetine (Prozac), and sertraline (Zoloft), among others. In cases of treatment-resistant OCD, other classes of medication, such as tricyclic antidepressants or atypical antipsychotics, may be prescribed. Medication is frequently used in conjunction with therapy.

Can OCD come back after treatment?
Yes. Major life transitions, periods of stress, or other factors can cause symptoms to return or, if they were never fully eradicated, to ramp back up in intensity. For some, these relapses are brief and do not require additional treatment; identifying specific triggers and practicing the skills learned in therapy can help speed their course. For others, returning to therapy for a brief period can help address the underlying stress and strengthen coping mechanisms.
