My name is Shelby Nielson, and I am a licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor. The approach that I take in therapy is to look at my clients from a strengths-based perspective. My focus is to work with people and enable them to be able to find the best versions of themselves. The first step I take in therapy is to engage a client from a person-centered approach to enable a strong therapeutic relationship. In building this kind of rapport with individuals we then can explore the effective theoretical approaches and techniques that can work for them.

You’re tired of pretending everything’s fine when you feel disconnected, unmotivated, or stuck. What you really want is clarity—about who you are, where you're going, and how to finally feel fulfilled. You’re not looking for surface-level self-help; you want real change rooted in identity, self-esteem, and purpose. Whether you’re navigating a life transition, recovering from trauma, or facing an identity crisis masked by achievement, I help people like you reclaim who they are beyond the titles, trauma, and expectations. If you're ready to stop surviving and start living with intention, alignment, and meaning—this is your next step.

In the journey into adult life, there are inherent pressures associated with child development, including anxiety and the struggles with self-image. I entered the mental health field because I can empathize with these pressures and wanted to help others experiencing similar difficulties. I enjoyed being a support system to family and peers; also feeling that a key component to an effective support system is guidance to discover solutions, I translated that passion into my adult life.

I have a passion for working with people from all walks of life. Oftentimes we may feel alone or like our problems are so great they cannot be overcome. Other times people feel a lot of shame about reaching out for help and see it as a sign of weakness or failure. I can assure you that you are not alone in your suffering or with your specific problems. Change, connection, and relief from mental and emotional suffering is possible. It is important to remember that we humans are social creatures and that reaching out for connection and support is built in to who we are, not a sign of weakness.

Are you experiencing the effects of trauma, or seeking ways to express grief and loss? I'm a dedicated practitioner of EMDR and other transformative healing modalities. Trauma can alter our lives profoundly, echoing into our adult years. While sometimes our minds and bodies can process these events independently, often, we need additional support to release and express this energy. I believe deeply in the power of our innate inner wisdom—that each of us possesses everything necessary for our own healing.

Male Therapists

As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?

There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.

How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?

Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client.

Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?

Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with therapists of a specific gender. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.

Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?

Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
