We ‌like‌ ‌to‌ ‌meet‌ ‌people‌ ‌where‌ ‌they‌ ‌are. ‌Trauma can sometimes leave us wondering‌ ‌“what‌ ‌is‌ ‌wrong‌ ‌with‌ me?“ We believe a better question is‌ ‌“what‌ ‌happened‌ ‌to‌ ‌you?” ‌In our practice, we view clients in that way. ‌Everyone‌ ‌has‌ ‌a‌ ‌story,‌ ‌a‌ ‌story‌ ‌that‌ ‌makes‌ ‌them‌ ‌unique. ‌Our interest is in understanding what the story is and how to use a‌ ‌story‌ ‌as‌ ‌a‌ ‌strength‌ ‌rather‌ ‌than‌ ‌a‌ ‌fault. ‌Even though it seems easier said than done, and it also takes time, we believe any client, from kids to adults, can get there with patience and understanding. Play therapy helps that healing process.

Anxiety is a common issue that can affect anyone at any time. Life transitions, such as the birth of a child, starting college, the loss of a loved one, or starting a new job, can be difficult to navigate. Stress is a natural response to the demands of life, but it can become overwhelming if left unmanaged. Grief is a natural response to loss and can be a difficult emotion to process. I want you to know that I see you and I am here to help you gain the skills necessary to help you on your healing journey.

Is your trauma or excessive worrying getting in the way of you living your best life? Are you a parent who is heartbroken because your child has experienced trauma? You, or your child, deserves to find your own unique healing journey that provides peace and a future you love. Trauma can often make us feel stuck in the past. Many people wonder if therapy will even help or if it is too late! You may find yourself not wanting to try therapy because you don't want to rehash the past or relive it. I don’t believe therapy has to be this way. In fact, therapy can be about us creating a future that you are excited to have.

Life can be messy, disappointing, disorienting, and challenging at times. John Lennon said, “Life is what happens to you while you’re busy making other plans.” Isn’t that the truth? Sometimes difficulties are the result of our own choices, sometimes the result of another’s choices, and sometimes the result of the hand life dealt us. No matter the source of your difficulties, healing and growth are possible. As Martin Luther King Jr once stated, “If you can’t fly, then run. If you can’t run, then walk. If you can’t walk, then crawl, but whatever you do, you have to keep moving forward.”

Searching for a therapist is overwhelming. You want to find someone who you can trust in what is likely one of the most confusing times in your life. After all, a deep part of you is feeling broken and alone in the world. Your mind won’t give you a moment’s rest. You feel unsafe in your own body and uncomfortable in your own skin. Your relationships are suffering—and with all this going on, you're now expected to choose a therapist.

Art Therapy

How does art therapy work?

The process of making art allows people to express themselves. Art-making can take many forms, such as painting, collage, or sculpting. The therapist asks questions that the work elicits, such as how the person felt while creating their piece, or if any memories surfaced that they can discuss. The therapist will then work with the patient to process their experience, understand themselves better, and work toward change.

Does art therapy help with trauma?

Art therapy can be a valuable treatment option for those suffering from trauma. Traumatic experiences such as combat, rape, or childhood abuse can be so painful that articulating them can be too scary or painful; creating art allows people to express themselves without words, and tell their story in a different way. The physical nature of creating art can also help people feel rooted in the body, which may benefit those who feel disconnected from their body in the aftermath of trauma.

How long does art therapy last?

The duration of art therapy varies, but a common length for treatment is 10 to 15 weekly sessions. Some people may see improvement in just a few weeks, while others may choose to remain in therapy longer term. Patients should periodically discuss their goals with their therapist to make sure the two are aligned on process and progress.

What are the limitations of art therapy?

Art therapy is helpful for many people, but a limitation is that it doesn’t have as robust an evidence base as other forms of therapy, such as cognitive behavioral therapy or acceptance and commitment therapy. The evidence on art therapy is mixed; some research demonstrates its benefits, while other research suggests that it has little impact on patients.
