Do you feel overwhelmed by stress? Does your child's behavior feel unmanageable? Do you or your child have feelings of depression, anxiety, or stress that make it hard to enjoy life or get along with other people? I am a licensed clinical psychologist and would like to help. I enjoy working with children from preschool through adolescence and their parents to help them manage emotional difficulties. I also work with adults who struggle with emotional difficulties that affect their daily lives.

I believe strongly in the importance of counseling grounded in respect, sensitivity, and compassion. I believe counseling is not just about feeling better but being better at dealing with the feelings we experience as we face life’s challenges. With the support of someone to help us process or teach us new skills difficult times can become times of growth. I enjoy working with people of all ages and backgrounds but particularly enjoy working with people going through life changes and middle school and high school youth.

Life truly is a journey. On this journey, we are often faced with events that weren't planned for, or that we just are not sure how to navigate. Sometimes we experience emotions or concerns that we just can't seem to feel in control of or feel we can manage effectively. As humans, we are designed to be connected to one another. When we go through life's challenges, this connection is critical to help support and empower us to use our skills and identify resources, moving us along life's path. For some of us, rather than reaching out, we may withdraw and isolate, making our navigation more difficult. We feel "stuck".

Counseling stinks, I tried it and didn’t think it was for me. Sound familiar? Those were my thoughts about counseling and I am wondering if you have ever felt that way? If I was offered the choice of seeing a counselor or assembling IKEA furniture with winter mittens, I would have redecorated my entire house in unpronounceable Swedish accouterments. Shunning the counseling establishment didn’t ease the sense of unhappiness I had, so I gave the system another go. This time I found a counselor that didn’t stink, a counselor that was able to see me for who I am and gave me a sense of hope I hadn’t found otherwise.

Does taking a break mean locking yourself in the house after a long day/week just to binge-watch Netflix, Hulu, YouTube or scroll Facebook, Instagram or TikTok? Do social situations leave you feeling “on-guard” or “out of place”? Feeling disconnected from friends, family, co-workers or even yourself? Pain (emotional, physical or psychological) is the one constant you count on each and every day. Your past continues to trigger sadness or anger, or you may not remember it at all. We help answer the questions "Where do I want to go in life?" - "Who do I want to go there with?"

Our foundation, which includes our childhood and the dynamics of our family, directly impacts our thoughts about ourselves and others. It affects our behaviors and relationships. Most of my clients have some sort of childhood trauma that is affecting their ability to move in a peaceful, productive direction. Understanding how the brain is affected, and how to incorporate positive thoughts and behaviors, can change a person's life. It takes courage to share our inner thoughts and experiences. I appreciate the strength in my clients and build on these, showing them they have what it takes to make positive changes.

There is research that shows the connection between client and therapist is the biggest predictor of client change, regardless of treatment techniques used in therapy. Of course technique is important, but if the client doesn't believe they are heard and understood or that the therapist isn't invested in them, they don't feel confident in the process and maybe don't come back.

Did you know that we are biologically wired to seek out connection, understanding and soothing from our fellow human beings? When connection and understanding are not happening with others, we become dysregulated and engage in behaviors that, on the surface, may not make a lot of sense to us. I will help you understand your behaviors and from this place of understanding and acceptance you can make the changes you desire. Emotional and physical safety is one of the most important factors in a successful therapeutic experience. Together we can work to create a relationship in which you feel heard and understood.

As you begin feeling like you’re ready to heal, you may have a difficult time finding someone you feel comfortable opening up with and confide to. Your anxiety or depression feels out of control, or you’re having a difficult time in your current life transition. You either do not have insurance or prefer not to use yours. The idea of finding someone to talk with scares the hell out of you. Maybe you’re afraid of finding help that’s “really expensive” or “too fancy”. Or maybe, my approach is exactly what you need.

Hello! My name is Dedra. I’m a therapist, which means that I have a Master’s degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling and I currently have a training license from the state of Wisconsin. Now that we’ve established that I’m qualified, let’s see if you think we’d make a good fit to get your mental health to a better place. Here’s some things about me: I am a mom - both human and dog, a wife, and a veteran. I enjoy traveling, being outside when there’s sunshine, and reading. While these may not apply to you, that's okay! I've worked with many people with a wide variety of traits, beliefs, backgrounds, and mental health concerns.

Thanks for stopping by! I am a Brainspotting-trained psychotherapist, and have been in the social work/mental health field for more than a decade. I (maybe like you?) have moved through a life that has not always been kind, easy, or safe. I was fortunate to find counselors who helped me reprocess and heal, and form a healthier, more secure sense of self. Through this personal work I became inspired to become a counselor and support others in similar ways.

I offer a safe, supportive environment and have found empathy, understanding and humor are important in building a therapeutic alliance. My abilities are well suited to people with a history of trauma and who are intuitive and creative. Whether you're looking for short term therapy or a deeper process, my skill level applies to both. Each person is unique and I anticipate and enjoy building a relationship that assumes collaboration. I then work with them toward activating their own healing potential, no matter the age. I work well with individuals who have had treatment failures in the past.

Sometimes life can feel like we are stuck in the mud. We are struggling to get out, to break free, but it feels like we can't get out. We may feel frustrated, angry, anxious, helpless, or distraught. When this happens, it can be difficult to know how to deal with what happened or what type of help we need.

FAQs - About Therapy and Counseling

How can I find a therapist in Menasha?

Search for nearby therapists or counselors by inputting your city, town, or suburb; or zip code; or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or zip code into the search bar.

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors.

Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the United States could cost between $100 and $200 or more. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship. Therapists in the United States are bound by the regulations set out by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), which aims to protect sensitive health information. With very few exceptions, a therapist will only discuss their client with others when the client has given their written permission. The instances in which a therapist would be required to disclose personal information are: if a client poses a danger to themselves or others, if the therapist suspects the abuse of a child or an elderly or otherwise dependent adult, or if they are legally forced to by court order. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed with a client before their first session.
