I don't believe in having an "ideal client," but rather subscribe to Irvin Yalom's idea that the client/clinician relationship is one of "fellow travelers." Therefore, I view it as my responsibility to meet the client where they are in order to begin a journey in which their needs and strengths indicate the direction of therapy. I create a space in which my diverse client-base is inspired to be as truthful and expressive as possible and in which we can begin to pay attention to the client's deepest voice. Moving toward feeling and through repression is crucial to my work, and I believe lasting growth begins here.

Things change in life and sometimes these transitions require support, care and insight that well-meaning friends and family cannot provide. Gaining an outside perspective, supportive validation and assistance with defining the issues that are most pertinent to you and your progression toward better life outcomes are crucial. Spending the time to address these issues is an important investment in yourself which can impact your relationships, your physical health and your future. Take the time to make that investment, you are worth it.

With a curious, collaborative, warm, and direct perspective, I help LGBTQIA+ adults working through trauma, anxiety, stress, depression, and identity exploration. Everyone has a unique story, perspective, and experience. Sometimes it helps to have someone walk with us to explore our identity, work through life challenges or traumas, and to find fulfillment. What do you want to do in your life? Where do you want to go? How do you want to be true to yourself? I have some maps to suggest, but you have the power to choose the one best for you.

You’ve made a courageous step in seeking therapy. Therapy can help us heal and grow, through deep listening and presence. Early life shapes how we create our sense of self, learn boundaries, and tend to feelings. We can decide now how we want to show up for ourselves and others, uncovering skills and beliefs that no longer serve us.

My name is Brad Klemm, LMSW and I have been working as a Psychotherapist since 2001. I graduated from University of Michigan's School of Social Work with a Master's Degree in Clinical Social Work. I then received postgraduate training through the Michigan Psychoanalytic Institute for adult and adolescent psychotherapy. I primarily use a psychodynamic approach in my work. This means I view your current symptoms as the result of past and present issues coming together. Once we understand this interplay, you will be able to control your symptoms, rather than feeling your symptoms are controlling you.

I feel a client deserves to be treated with dignity and respect regardless of what life challenges causes an individual to seek counseling. I am a compassionate and patient person which has caused my clients to feel very comfortable with me as a Clinician. I believe a person can benefit from guidance in all areas which is why I seek to treat the "whole person": body, mind and spirit.I attempt to bring a person to a place of healing from their struggles by allowing the client to have an input in the therapeutic process.

I enjoy working with athletes between high school and adult ages. Some of the common challenges I encounter when working with athletes are performance related issues, low-confidence, sport/life balance, stress management, athlete identity, body image, injury rehabilitation, adjusting to retirement, coping with setbacks/failures, and more. Making a choice to attend therapy is never easy. One of the bravest things you can do is to understand your own story, pain, and trauma. I believe many people suffer in silence and I want to be the first person to tell you—I’m ready to listen and walk with you on your journey. My goal is to create a safe space as we collaborate to address your presenting concerns, such as anxiety, depression, relationship issues, adjustment concerns, and/or trauma. Life often takes us on a difficult road leading us to find new ways to manage, work through, or create new options.

My ideal client is someone who admits they need help due to the fact that what they have been trying thus far is not working. They are looking to better themselves or help remedy life conflicts, stress, trauma, addiction, or daily life struggles. A client who is ready to engage in having a thoughtful, nurturing, safe space to help them move to a healthier life style and finding peace within. My new and ongoing training aligns with my core-values and therapeutic approach. I am confident the more I continue to learn, the better I am equipped to serve the individual needs of my clients.

As a counselor, my passion is helping people find hope in their healing process. It's about making commitments to healing in order to become your best self with a partner (myself) who provides a warm, safe environment while supporting you in a non-judgmental manner. Counseling can help both children and adults develop or enhance problem-solving skills, and to cope with stress and a variety of emotional as well as behavioral issues. My goal is not to make decisions or solve individuals' problems, but to gently guide them into naturally making choices that are right for them, their children, and family.

You can probably come up with 100 reasons why not, but therapy is an investment in you. How long will you be the observer of your life rather than a participant? I offer services throughout MI. I use a collaborative approach, which enables clients the skills to better separate feelings from thinking and verbalize emotions versus acting them out. I provide a safe virtual space for you to express yourself without judgment. Together, we will openly explore past messages that contribute to the current behaviors you would like to change. It's a process, and if you allow me, I will walk alongside you as we navigate life's challenges.

FAQs - About Therapy and Counseling

How can I find a therapist in Southfield?

Search for nearby therapists or counselors by inputting your city, town, or suburb; or zip code; or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or zip code into the search bar.

Learn more about how to find a therapist

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors.

Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the United States could cost between $100 and $200 or more. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship. Therapists in the United States are bound by the regulations set out by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), which aims to protect sensitive health information. With very few exceptions, a therapist will only discuss their client with others when the client has given their written permission. The instances in which a therapist would be required to disclose personal information are: if a client poses a danger to themselves or others, if the therapist suspects the abuse of a child or an elderly or otherwise dependent adult, or if they are legally forced to by court order. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed with a client before their first session.
