My years of work with traumatized and grief-stricken clients and families have brought the conclusion that anxiety, depression, and interpersonal relationships are the barriers to a healthy self, to a meaningful and purposeful life.
Life is a sequence of gains and losses. Naturally we seek the favorable effect of gains, but the real opportunity for growth is in our losses, in our struggles, in acknowledging our wounded selves. Growth is the result of searching, discovering and strengthening who you are, of changing your direction in life. Counseling can be instrumental in the process.

Seeking help is the first step towards feeling better. Regardless of why you are seeking help, the most important thing right now is that you are making the choice to do so. Focusing on what we can control (instead of what is beyond our control) is often a key element to working through difficult life circumstances. Together, we can work on learning and developing skills that can help you improve the quality of your life. My main focus during therapy will be to help you lead a more fulfilling life by working with you collaboratively to achieve your goals.

Many of my clients have unaddressed trauma & grief that is still affecting them as they enter their 20s & 30s. It shows up in their relationships, job, parenting, & self-image. They are cycle-breakers looking for the next step in their emotional recovery. My clients are the first in their family to say “It doesn’t have to be this way and I can do better.” Together we change destructive generational behavior patterns & focus on building emotional regulation & resilience by creating a sense of safety in the body & mind. When needed, our work also includes processing grief - both typical and complex - so clients can move forward.

When should I seek treatment for anxiety?
Everyone feels anxious at times, but when anxiety causes disruption to your daily life, it may be time to seek help. Such disruption can be mental, physical, or both: having fear dominate your thoughts, avoiding situations or objects that bring on feelings of anxiety, or experiencing shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, or panic attacks. When these symptoms are recurrent and distressing, it may be time to talk to someone.
What are the most common types of treatment for anxiety?
Talk therapy, particularly cognitive behavioral therapy, is the most common treatment for anxiety. Studies have shown it is equally effective as medication. Other popular forms of therapy are popular, depending on a patient’s experience. Exposure therapy, for instance, can be useful for people dealing with fears and phobias, or who have experienced traumatic events. Dialectical Behavioral Therapy may be useful for patients who need help with emotion regulation. Anxiolytic medications, like benzodiazepines, can also help with calming a person enough to focus on the skills they’ve learned, and physical exercise has been shown to help symptoms of anxiety across the board.
How long does therapy for anxiety take to work?
The amount of time needed to alleviate symptoms depends on the severity of a person’s condition. Some therapies may take 5-20 weekly sessions to show results. Anti-depressant medications typically take two to four weeks before a benefit is felt. Anti-anxiety medications are felt typically within 20-30 minutes. Medications are best used to offer a patient a better headspace in which to work on techniques learned in therapy. Exercise, improved sleep habits, and meditation are effective, but takes weeks or months to show results.
How effective is treatment for anxiety?
Treatment for anxiety has been shown to be moderately to highly effective, according to a large body of psychology studies and analyses. For some people, treatment using CBT or exposure therapy alone is effective. Others respond best to a combination of medication and therapy.
