Before I became a counselor, I spent twenty-five years in the high-tech world leading product teams for companies as large as Microsoft and as small my own start-up. I spent my days understanding the people who used my software and their lives so I could then work with the amazing software engineers to build the right tools in the way that helped the most.

I work with tweens (11+), teens, and adults, including high achievers, people pleasers, and LGBTQ+ clients, who are navigating burnout, identity, relationships, and overwhelm. Many feel responsible for everyone else but struggle to care for themselves, overthink everything, or feel disconnected from who they are. Even if things look “fine” on the outside, internally it can feel exhausting. Therapy becomes a space to slow down, understand what’s underneath, and reconnect with yourself in a more honest, sustainable way.

What if therapy could help you be less reactive, feel more empowered, and experience more hopeful interactions in your relationship? What if you could stay centered and speak for what you want and need, regardless of another person’s reaction? As a family therapist specializing in Internal Family Systems, or IFS, I seek to help individuals, couples, and families to explore, hear, and heal all the important, and often unrecognized, parts of themselves which influence every reaction and every choice. This inward focus removes the dependency on another person to achieve progress, opening up new possibilities for growth and change.

Having been a therapist for 39 years working with couples and families, I have learned that the most important component while conducting therapy is to establish a conversation of listening to what clients are really saying.

We live in a time when self-help tools abound, yet there are times we can't meditate enough, go for a long enough run, read another book or medicate out of a difficult situation. Many of life's traumas are relational in nature. We need a therapeutic relationship to help us heal from these traumas and find new ways of interacting. We need to feel seen, heard and supported emotionally by another person. And we need to trust that what we're saying will be held in strictest confidence. Welcome to Goodwin Counseling where I am committed to helping clients live happier, healthy lives.

Parenting Therapists
What does therapy for parenting look like?
Therapists may work with parents individually, together, or include the whole family to find solutions for the problems a parent faces. Many parent-based therapies work on a parent’s relationship with their children, problem-solving within the family, and analysis of family dynamics. Therapy conducted remotely by video may be helpful in allowing a therapist to observe how families interact in their own homes.
When should a parent seek therapy?
When behavioral problems begin to disrupt the healthy functioning of a family, it may be a good time to look into therapy. If parents find that children are acting out in school, have started using drugs or alcohol, have developed eating disorders, or other similar red flags, a therapist may be able to help.
How long does therapy take for parenting problems?
Depending on the severity of a family’s challenges and the type of treatment utilized, therapy for parenting can last from weeks to months. Cognitive behavioral therapy is a pragmatic therapy type that can be brief, most often ranging from between 5 and 20 sessions. Structural family therapy, which inspects family dynamics, often takes several months. Parent-child interaction therapy is typically shorter-term, lasting between 10 and 20 sessions. For any therapy, the duration will depend on the progress made and results realized.
Can therapy help parents dealing with burnout or stress?
Parenting is difficult. Parents may dismiss or conceal feelings of exhaustion, overwhelm, or escape ideation—imagining withdrawing from their parental obligations altogether. but left unattended, these feelings can have negative effects on the whole family. A therapist can help parents work on the skills they might need to better cope with the burdens of parenting and help them be the best parents they can be.
