My own life experiences drew me to social work and I have worked for many years in various forms of addiction treatment.
My style is strengths based, collaborative, and I recognize the dignity of the individual while facilitating the healing from issues including addiction, trauma, attachment, and mood and anxiety disorders. I have found that core beliefs can contribute to ineffectual coping skills, as well as difficulties in life transitions and with grief and loss.

Many of my clients come to me after discovering sexual betrayal, compulsive sexual behavior, pornography use, affairs, or years of deception in their relationship. They often feel overwhelmed, confused, hypervigilant, and unsure what is real anymore. Using an APSATS-informed approach, I help partners understand betrayal trauma, stabilize their nervous system, rebuild self-trust, develop boundaries, and reconnect with themselves. My goal is not to tell you whether to stay or leave, but to help you move from crisis toward clarity, empowerment, and healing.

I specialize in substance use and harm reduction, which means I meet you exactly where you are without requiring abstinence or a label.
As of 07/04/26, I am accepting new clients, in person (Austin) and online. There is nothing wrong with you. You’ve learned some patterns that made sense at the time, got reinforced by your environment and now things have gone haywire. Everything you’ve learned can be unlearned. I’m Christie, a Licensed Chemical Dependency Counselor with over 13 years of lived recovery experience. People come to me having tried other approaches and feeling like healing just doesn’t work for them. They leave with actual tools, a lot more self compassion and sometimes even something they didn’t expect, they start to see the good in themselves.

" ADDICTION & DEPENDENCY result from an unconscious refusal to move through the pain of withdrawal (from a chemical, thought-process, behavior, other person, etc.).
Unhealthy “self-regulation” (finding a place of being okay) happens in almost as many ways as there are people; what IS the same for us all, however, is the need to feel “safe” in our connections with others and ourselves. This essential, biological, human-need lays under most of our behaviors. Bringing this understanding to the surface is my first goal....

At Swartwout Group, we believe challenges rarely affect just one area of our lives. Difficulties at work can affect our relationships. Family stress can affect our confidence and well-being. Often, the key to moving forward is understanding how these pieces fit together.

Screw it. I'm just going to come out and say it, no matter how unpopular such opinions may be. First, counseling is SO over-priced for (what most times) you get. Second, most counseling isn't all that good. (Sorry, that's just how I feel.) I've personally gone to too many therapists, and have had too many therapists work underneath me, not to know this for a fact. You deserve better. You deserve GOOD counseling that won't break your bank. You deserve more. You deserve something more than sympathy, validation, platitudes, or motivation. You deserve real help, real solutions, real tools. You deserve change that lasts.

I'm glad you're here. At my core, I believe in liberation- on a collective and individual level; freedom from all systems of oppression, and freedom from the ghosts of trauma that haunt us. My clients are often those who have been told they are: "too much," feel like the black sheep, or are leaders, creatives, or generational cycle breakers. The bulk of my clients are neurodivergent people of color, highly sensitive, or live somewhere on the spectrum.

Addiction Therapists
What is the best therapy for addiction?
Addiction treatment will be tailored to the individual. People seeking help for addiction—whether with a psychotherapist, in an outpatient clinic, or in a residential program—should expect to engage in multiple types of treatments, sometimes including medication. For anyone recovering from addiction, avoiding situations in which one has typically used a substance is essential, as is the support of close connections. Since substance use disorders tend to co-occur with underlying mental health conditions such as anxiety or depression, those must also be addressed as part of any recovery plan.

How long does therapy for addiction take?
There is no set timeline for recovery from addiction. Patients and their families should expect the work to last several months, if not longer. Residential treatment programs may be based on a stay of 30, 60, or 90 days, with continuing work after release, but only about 1 percent of people are treated in such facilities. Ceasing use is just the first step; therapy to help maintain abstinence and effect behavior change must follow. The process of recovery, neuroscience has shown, involves brain cells recovering the capacity to respond to natural sources of reward and restore control over the impulse to use. Another definition of recovery is restoring voluntary control over one’s substance use and retaking all of one’s previous responsibilities.

How effective is drug addiction treatment?
Substance use disorders are treatable and remission is achievable for many who seek recovery; by some estimates, more than three-quarters of people who become addicted to alcohol or drugs recover. But that success rarely occurs quickly or on a set timeline; relapse is not only common, but many therapists and clinicians view it as a normal part of the process—not always a sign that a person has returned to addiction, but a signal that their treatment should be adjusted to help them regain control. Overall, research suggests, five years after the end of substance use, one’s risk of relapse is no greater than that of others who had not faced addiction. Other experts believe that complete abstinence is not the only measure of recovery, and that, through effective treatment, many people can learn to control their use.

How can you get addiction treatment for someone?
The most important factor in recovery from addiction is widely understood to be an individual’s commitment to change. For that reason,“interventions” in which friends and family gather to urge or force someone to begin immediate treatment often backfire; even when such efforts do lead someone to begin treatment, they may be less likely to stay than those who are self-driven. Still, family members can play an important role in supporting an individual who seeks help and can take part in family therapy as one element of a loved one’s treatment.
