Do you feel you have a lot weighing on your mind but don’t know where to let it out? Do you often find yourself hesitant to talk through how you’re feeling? It takes courage to recognize the need to reach out to someone and even more so to act on it. As a licensed clinical social worker, I can provide a safe and non-judgmental space for you to be heard and allow you to put those thoughts into your own words. My approach is rooted in cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and utilizing techniques to help you change the way you approach difficult situations.

The worry about what others will think and how you might make them feel has become too much, leading to emotional and physical burnout.
Together, we’ll explore the origin of why you do not feel good enough and the past events that created those feelings and behaviors. Using EMDR and CBT, we’ll work to decrease intense emotions or reactions to those past events. By facing the past, you can learn how it impacts the present and make changes to provide a better future.

Some of these challenges may show up as substance abuse, depression, anxiety, abusive relationships that have fear and shame attached.
So many people address their substance abuse but fail to address the core issue. Substance abuse tends to be symptom of a trauma along with depression and anxiety. For most of my career, I have worked with trauma and addiction. As an EMDR certified therapist, we will work on changing how the brain remembers a trauma.

Maybe anxiety feels constant, your emotions feel hard to manage, or you’re trying to figure out who you are in the middle of everything life is asking of you.
I’ll challenge you to take an honest look at the patterns, choices, and behaviors that may be keeping you stuck. Growth requires both support and accountability, and we’ll work together to find that balance. Therapy with me isn’t about quick fixes or one-size-fits-all solutions.

When should I seek treatment for anxiety?
Everyone feels anxious at times, but when anxiety causes disruption to your daily life, it may be time to seek help. Such disruption can be mental, physical, or both: having fear dominate your thoughts, avoiding situations or objects that bring on feelings of anxiety, or experiencing shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, or panic attacks. When these symptoms are recurrent and distressing, it may be time to talk to someone.

What are the most common types of treatment for anxiety?
Talk therapy, particularly cognitive behavioral therapy, is the most common treatment for anxiety. Studies have shown it is equally effective as medication. Other popular forms of therapy are popular, depending on a patient’s experience. Exposure therapy, for instance, can be useful for people dealing with fears and phobias, or who have experienced traumatic events. Dialectical Behavioral Therapy may be useful for patients who need help with emotion regulation. Anxiolytic medications, like benzodiazepines, can also help with calming a person enough to focus on the skills they’ve learned, and physical exercise has been shown to help symptoms of anxiety across the board.

How long does therapy for anxiety take to work?
The amount of time needed to alleviate symptoms depends on the severity of a person’s condition. Some therapies may take 5-20 weekly sessions to show results. Anti-depressant medications typically take two to four weeks before a benefit is felt. Anti-anxiety medications are felt typically within 20-30 minutes. Medications are best used to offer a patient a better headspace in which to work on techniques learned in therapy. Exercise, improved sleep habits, and meditation are effective, but takes weeks or months to show results.

How effective is treatment for anxiety?
Treatment for anxiety has been shown to be moderately to highly effective, according to a large body of psychology studies and analyses. For some people, treatment using CBT or exposure therapy alone is effective. Others respond best to a combination of medication and therapy.
