I am a licensed professional counselor and board approved supervisor and have been in practice since 2004. I earned my Masters degree in Counseling in 2002 and doctoral degree in Counselor Education and Supervision in 2005, both from Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi. My areas of expertise include anxiety , depression, grief, shame, relationships, career, life/work balance, and stress management. Additionally, I specialize in working with non-suicidal self-injury. I typically use an integrative perspective; utilizing cognitive behavioral, solution-focused, reality, and client-centered theories to best serve clients.

We identify perceptions and fears , and then we identify strengths and build the courage they need to change perceptions and obliterate false fears .
Aberrations in the human condition can be very complex with roots that extend throughout the bio-psycho-social context. It often takes more than one treatment modality. I approach each client with an open mind to discover what will work in each client as I see them. Each client is given resources for self-discovery, self-healing, and self-empowerment.

You are not a diagnosis. You are an individual that just wants to have your brain be sharper; be calmer; or having your child have a better experience in school. My clients are tired of medications and want to see more permanent improvements in their daily lives. ADD, ADHD, anxiety , depression....almost everything that stems from the brain benefits from neurofeedback. Adults who feel "foggy", unmotivated and chaotic, use this therapy to optimize their brain. My clients are generally between 7 and 75 years of age. They have sleep issues, chronic stress or may not engage with others well. I can help you.

Hola! I'm a bilingual therapist who works with tweens, teens and adults. Sometimes we go through periods in our lives where life feels unfair, and we get stuck in that downward spiral just waiting for the next thing to go wrong. These stressful periods in our lives cause changes in our mood and behavior. This may look like not being able to focus or complete tasks, becoming easily irritable or angry, feeling overwhelmed, worrying about even worse things happening. Do you want to gain control back of your life and be able to enjoy yourself? Or even just become a better version of yourself?

I am a genuine listener who engages others by getting to know them, while exploring needs and goals. I believe that problem-solving begins with discovery of our inner strengths which can be used to foster healing and growth. As one begins to identify these resources and learns to use them, she/he is empowered to make changes and gain understanding about self and others previously thought impossible. While work in therapy can be difficult at times, it does not always have to be "serious business". Many people do not know how to have fun and learning this skill is always healing.

Through extensive training with Virginia Satir, mother of family therapy, I learned, long ago, that all people come equipped with internal resources for growth. My goal: to help the people who come to me to become aware of those resources – to actualize their unique self. Often, this involves our ferreting out wrong information, gathered while growing up. Generally, this "dated" information is transmitted from parents who, themselves, did not know any better. My intent is to create safe contexts in which a person may discover their strengths while learning how to cope with their perceived "weakness."

Anxiety Therapists

What are the most common treatments for anxiety?

Talk therapy, particularly cognitive behavioral therapy, is the most common treatment for anxiety. Studies have shown it is equally effective as medication. Other popular forms of therapy are popular, depending on a patient’s experience. Exposure therapy, for instance, can be useful for people dealing with fears and phobias, or who have experienced traumatic events. Dialectical Behavioral Therapy may be useful for patients who need help with emotion regulation. Anxiolytic medications, like benzodiazepines, can also help with calming a person enough to focus on the skills they’ve learned, and physical exercise has been shown to help symptoms of anxiety across the board.

How long does therapy for anxiety take to work?

The amount of time needed to alleviate symptoms depends on the severity of a person’s condition. Some therapies may take 5-20 weekly sessions to show results. Anti-depressant medications typically take two to four weeks before a benefit is felt. Anti-anxiety medications are felt typically within 20-30 minutes. Medications are best used to offer a patient a better headspace in which to work on techniques learned in therapy. Exercise, improved sleep habits, and meditation are effective, but takes weeks or months to show results.

When should I seek treatment for anxiety?

Everyone feels anxious at times, but when anxiety causes disruption to your daily life, it may be time to seek help. Such disruption can be mental, physical, or both: having fear dominate your thoughts, avoiding situations or objects that bring on feelings of anxiety, or experiencing shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, or panic attacks. When these symptoms are recurrent and distressing, it may be time to talk to someone.

How effective is treatment for anxiety?

Treatment for anxiety has been shown to be moderately to highly effective, according to a large body of psychology studies and analyses. For some people, treatment using CBT or exposure therapy alone is effective. Others respond best to a combination of medication and therapy.
