Change in our lives is inevitable. The transition periods between times of stability in our lives are more common then we often care to admit. These transitions can trigger stress, anxiety, depression and other current and long standing psychological issues. I started my clinical practice in 1989 in Austin, Texas and specialize in helping adult individuals and couples who are experiencing transitions due to significant changes occurring in their lives.

I'm JoAnn Ponder, psychologist in private practice. I earned my Ph.D. in educational psychology in 1998, but started practicing with my M.A. in 1977. I have over 30 years of experience in working with children and adults in inpatient and outpatient treatment. I've had postgraduate training in play therapy, sandplay, infant-parent intervention, family/couples therapy, and child/adult psychoanalysis. Research has demonstrated that early experiences with significant others affect brain structure; foster individuation, self-esteem, and emotional regulation; and serve as templates for subsequent interpersonal relationships.

As far as anyone can tell, you’ve got a great marriage and life. You’re accomplished, always loving to each other and close with friends and family. But on the inside, you have never felt so alone. Over the years you have tried to rationalize, fix, and excuse your relationship growing apart, yet it is disheartening. Something just does not feel right anymore, and you begin to realize you feel like you have a roommate rather than a partnership. Maintaining a fulfilling and loving relationship can be a challenge in today's fast paced environment.

Through individual, couples, and group therapy, I help people better understand themselves and find more satisfaction in their relationships. With an eye toward your past but with feet firmly in the present, I work with folks to make sense of what they've tried sort it out their own, who want to feel more sturdy, steady, and comfortable moving through life. Therapy can be a fantastic tool for gaining greater insight about yourself and more comfort in the relationships you have and you'd like to have. I work with many busy professionals who are typically trying to find more balance and ease in their very complex lives.

I am a licensed psychologist with over 30 years of experience working with clients. My work is based upon my belief that human beings are inherently good and yet all too often adopt limiting belief systems and habitual behavioral patterns which keep us from realizing our true nature. I work with clients who wish to regain their balance and integrity and assist them in learning how to live the lives they intuitively know they are meant to live. Clients often present with depression, anxiety and/or relationship difficulties and seek to feel better and sustain more on-going joy, love, and harmony in their lives.

Counseling is a trusting relationship where someone is actively seeking help from a professional who is willing to help. My goal is to explore my client's needs for therapy. From there, I will try to find out what they might expect from therapy such as developing the mental/emotional strength necessary to relate well with others, making decisions about relationship or career issues, reducing anxiety, improving self-esteem, or decreasing depressive symptoms that make their day difficult. I will be honest and understanding. It is my hope that each and everyone finds happiness, peace, and hope.

For three decades I have been meeting with individuals and groups to generate the process of healing restorative change. Relationally dynamic, I learn of you, with you. This process is ever changing and yet maintains a reliable constancy. It's compelling to be part of a process in which people, even after great hurt and disappointment, can safely access their vulnerability and regain courage. In time this enables them to become intimate with themselves and those they love, and pursue their own dreams. I'm receptive to the diversity of our human experience, have expertise with LGBTQIA and invested in decolonizing therapy.

Making the decision to enter therapy can be a difficult decision, especially when trying to find a therapist who is the right fit. I don’t believe anyone should feel ambivalent about their therapist. The priority is finding someone who provides a safe space for sharing your story without judgment. Questions that might run through your mind: "Do I need therapy?" "Will talking to someone help me?" "I (we) went before and it didn’t really help. How will this time be different?" I recognize that not everyone "needs" therapy, but I think everyone can benefit from the support of an objective and compassionate person to empower growth.

I help people who are struggling with anxiety, depression, mood disorder or difficult life transitions. I also specialize in helping people who come from difficult circumstances and are now struggling emotionally or with their relationships because of it. I help people heal from trauma, with an emphasis on the wounds of early childhood. I am certified in EMDR and use other evidence-based treatments such as ego state therapy, DBT, and trauma-informed stabilization treatment. I love helping clients analyze the ways in which the past shows up in the present. We address what we learn with trauma processing and practicing new skills.

When people understand how trauma has changed them they can begin to change themselves. In therapy, you will discover the faulty thoughts and behaviors that persists and replace them with healthier alternatives. Therapy works best if its molded to your unique past, culture, attachment style and personality type.

Psychodynamic Therapists
Is psychodynamic therapy evidence-based?
Studies have found psychodynamic therapy to be effective in treating conditions like social anxiety, eating disorders, chronic pain, some personality disorders, and depression; indeed, some studies have found it to be just as effective as CBT or medication. What’s more, several studies have found that the benefits of psychodynamic therapy tend to endure—even grow—long after treatment has ended.
How long does psychodynamic therapy last?
Unlike CBT and other more structured forms of therapy, psychodynamic therapy tends to be open-ended and may not be limited to a set number of sessions. It is common for clients to be in therapy for a year or longer and to see their therapist one to three times a week, though the exact schedule and timeline may vary depending on a client’s challenges and progress. However, brief psychodynamic therapy is available, which tends to be more goal-oriented and typically unfolds over 16 to 30 sessions.
Does psychodynamic therapy work?
Research finds that psychodynamic therapy can help someone manage or reduce symptoms of diagnosable mental health conditions like depression or anxiety. The modality may also offer a range of benefits that are harder to measure but just as valuable—such as increased self-worth or healthier relationships. While no therapy type will work for everyone, research and anecdotal evidence suggest that psychodynamic therapy can be highly effective.
What are the limitations of psychodynamic therapy?
Some meta-analyses have concluded that there is little evidence to suggest that psychodynamic therapy can effectively treat certain mental health conditions such as PTSD, OCD, or psychosis, though it is sometimes used to do so. More broadly, the open-ended, free-association structure of psychodynamic therapy may be frustrating for clients who prefer a more structured, time-limited, or goal-oriented approach.
