I have been working with adolescents, children, adults via individual, family, and couples for 15 years who deal with mental health and/or
substance use
issues.
Dealing with life's daily issues and maladaptive behaviors can be a challenge. Achieving balance with self, family, and life's challenges are difficult when personal and emotional needs are "out of sorts." However, it is possible to live a fulfilling and joy filled life even if you have been struggling with mental health and stressful issues. Counseling can provide the outlet needed to talk or discover issues and concerns causing conflict/dilemas for you and/or family members. Let's begin the journey to deal with the issues now. It can be a challenge but you can do it! You can live a positive quality of life.

Do you need to unplug? In this world of technology and 24/7 social media, we are more connected than ever...or are we? Modern day technology has revolutionized our daily lives, but it has also come at a high price. Ironically, many people have never felt more alone or isolated. Please know that there is a safe place where you can go and feel free to be yourself, where you will be heard, and your thoughts and feelings do matter. I'm offering you a comforting, warm, and inviting environment where you can feel connected to another person, get away from harsh criticisms and where no one will judge you.

Does it seem like emotions are taking over your life – anxiety, hurt, anger, sadness? Are you struggling with grief, trauma, or other life transitions? Are you noticing relationships are becoming more difficult and problems are surfacing at home, work, or school? Are you turning to coping tools that may help in the moment, but are starting to make things worse overall - drug use, unhealthy relationships, isolation, or other behaviors? Are you losing sight of yourself, the person you want to be, and the strengths you have? If you identify with any of these questions, know you are not alone.

Substance Use Therapists
How do substance and drug recovery or rehabilitation programs work?
In inpatient programs, individuals live in a facility with other clients in recovery; in outpatient programs, individuals reside at home. These facilities are staffed with healthcare professionals including physicians, nurses, psychologists, counselors, and psychotherapists. Staff often also includes people who have recovered themselves, serving as mentors and guides. These programs may use abstinence, harm reduction, detoxification, psychotherapy, and other methods.
How do 12-step programs combined with psychotherapy work?
Members of 12-step programs help each other reach abstinence and work to maintain it. These programs promote complete change in the individual’s emotional, mental, physical, and even spiritual perspectives. Some programs require that new members attend 90 meetings in 90 days. Many people do attend these programs in conjunction with their work in psychotherapy; the combination of therapy along with 12-step can be extremely effective.
How does harm reduction combined with psychotherapy work?
According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, harm reduction prevents death, injury, disease, overdose, and substance misuse. People who choose harm reduction for substance use reduce the amount of drugs they consume. It is not abstinence-based like a 12-step program, but combining harm reduction with psychotherapy proves to be effective for many people.
Are there specific medications for substance and drug use?
There are medications approved to treat substance use disorder—such as buprenorphine, methadone, naltrexone, and acamprosate. These medications do help people cope with substance use as well as avoid the problem of relapse. Naltrexone can help reduce cravings, methadone is an opioid medication used to treat severe pain, and acamprosate may help ease symptoms like poor sleep and anxious feelings.
