I have provided therapy in a private practice and school setting through the Archdiocese of San Antonio and am trained in basic EMDR, Level One Theraplay, and EFT .
We all struggle with the ups and downs of life. My passion is working with children (ages 3 and older) and families to promote healthy and happy individuals and relationships. I hope to help my clients enhance their own individual strengths, better their relationships with others, and enjoy the most out of everyday interactions and experiences. Solution Focused and Attachment-Based therapy are the primary approaches I utilize in treating clients. As human beings, I believe we are wired to connect with others and that individual change and healing influences relational change and healing.

I am most passionate about helping strengthen couples as the foundation for the family and helping adult clients flourish through Christ-centered couple's and mental health therapy to achieve their God-given purpose. Particularly important for couples therapy is understanding that your relationship is the client; and I am passionate about strengthening the client. I will listen carefully with compassion, allowing each individual a voice and I WILL NOT take sides. I'm on the side of your relationship and here to help each person take ownership of it, draw upon its inner resources and rediscover its goals and purpose.

My name is Mikayla Williams, and I am the founder of MMCC. We know it's hard to be vulnerable with a new person, not knowing how they’ll react to what you tell them. As counselors, our role is to meet you where you’re at, take your hand, and walk with you at your own pace out of the gutter. We are passionate for holistic, mindfulness mental health counseling for kids, teens, couples, and adults in areas including trauma, domestic violence and sexual assault victims and survivors, grief and loss, anxiety, depression, codependency, self-esteem, identity, self-harming behaviors, relationships, parenting, and reclaiming control of life.

I utilize a number of approaches to therapy, including mindfulness based work, the Gottman Method, Emotionally Focused Therapy, and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) Therapy.
While my therapeutic style calls upon several well established and effective counseling approaches, my main focus is on interpersonal relationships. My passion is to guide my clients on a journey to discover inner strengths and to develop positive patterns of interaction. I am a professional counselor and a marriage and family therapist that loves working with families. All aspects of family life and members of the family (individuals, couples, single parents, entire families, and blended families) are of interest to me. I know that what affects one person in the family affects all members of the family.

After an 8-year career in public relations, I was called to the helping profession and received my master's in social work in 2011. Since then, I have been called a "fierce advocate" and "impassioned counselor" by my clients and colleagues. I have served as a therapist in medical/trauma and psychiatric hospitals, intensive outpatient programs (IOPs), in community health and in schools.

How many times have you thought about going to counseling only to say to yourself"I'll be fine, there's nothing wrong with me, this will pass"? Me too, until it was obvious I wasn't fine, there was something wrong and it wasn't going to pass. It is a scary proposition to sit down with a complete stranger and tell them your innermost thoughts and emotions. I believe that most of us know where we are and where we want to be, but sometimes understanding what got us where we are and how we are going to get where we want to be are not so clear. I can help you get where you want to be. It isn't always easy, but it is worth it.

Two words: life happens! Therapy helps us live more purposeful, self-aware lives. There is nothing sweeter, to me, than healing trauma and breaking chains. Trauma seeps through many aspects of our lives, and if we're not careful, can drastically alter our response to the world around us. It is important to move toward existing in the world the way we choose to exist, not what's projected onto us. Also, life happens in the context of relationships; therefore, couples therapy sets my soul ablaze. Couples seeking to grow or overcome obstacles is incredibly intimate work. I am honored to walk alongside and help heal your covenant.

Being a parent is hard. Being a Christian parent, to a hurting child, in a secular world, is even harder. Your child, or even you, may be struggling with anxiety or other mental health or behavioral concerns. You want your child to talk to you and tell you how they're feeling. You want to know what to say to comfort them and what to do when they're in a crisis. You want answers to all the questions swirling in your head and heart right now. I can help you answer them by teaching you about powerful, prayerful parenting.

The challenges that find you researching therapists are to be embraced. Those challenges are sending you a powerful message that something about your life, your relationships or your child's behavior is no longer working. Change is already taking place within you, and HOPE is awakening. My clients tend to be high achieving women and children ages 5 to 10 with anxiety. I often work with healthcare and mental health professionals. Clients who come to me have a desire to improve their relationships, heal from burn out, to practice healthy boundaries, and to work through family of origin and/or attachment issues.

If you are looking for someone to provide an approach that involves a safe place to express yourself, solution focused, life coach modalities from the strengths perspective or even a solution focused aspect; I would be a great fit for you. I practice from a bio-psycho-social spiritual model. I believe that each person deserves respect, the opportunity to be heard and to have a voice regardless of background, culture, sexual orientation or economic status. I would be honored to discover what will bring the peace we all seek.

Emotionally Focused Therapists

Who is emotionally focused therapy for?

Emotionally focused therapy (EFT) is for couples who are emotionally distressed, stuck in an unsatisfying relationship pattern or feeling deeply alienated. They may even believe the relationship is beyond repair. Very often, the partners display intense anger, fear, grief, loss of trust, or a sense of betrayal in the relationship. In addition, EFT is helpful to couples and individuals who have difficulty expressing emotions and those who have trouble regulating emotions.

Why do people need emotionally focused therapy?

People need emotionally focused therapy because the need for others is built into the brain, but the pressures of daily life can erode feelings of love, and couples often do not have the skills to find their way back to the comfort of each other. Instead, they may be stuck in repetitive patterns of anger, fear, grief, loss of trust, or a sense of betrayal. Emotionally focused therapy regards such strong negative feelings as expressions of protest over the loss of connection and turns them into pathways of reconnection.

What happens in emotionally focused therapy?

Over the course of eight to 20 weekly sessions, couples de-escalate their negative emotional reactivity to one another so that they can listen to each other and be responsive to each other’s needs. Then the deep emotional and physical bond is restored, giving partners a sense of comfort and security, which they can use to solve whatever problems come their way. The therapist plays an active role, helping partners understand how anger and withdrawal are actually misguided cries for connection.

What problems does emotionally focused therapy treat?

EFT is designed to help couples stuck in dysfunctional relationship patterns regain closeness and rebuild their relationship. Typically, such couples experience considerable distress, with partners feeling alienated and distrustful of one another, not certain their relationship can survive. EFT is also helpful to individuals experiencing attachment-related fears of loss; it helps them learn to use their fears as a way of eliciting the closeness they desire.
