Welcome! My name is Holly Bankston. I believe that every person has the capacity for growth, healing, and meaningful change. My goal is to provide a safe, supportive, and nonjudgmental environment where clients feel comfortable exploring life’s challenges, processing difficult emotions, and gaining a deeper understanding of themselves. I know that starting therapy can feel vulnerable, so I work to create a space where you feel heard, respected, and supported from the very beginning. I’m especially passionate about helping individuals navigate concerns related to trauma, anxiety, stress, relationships, and family issues.

While it is common to feel "unraveled" when daily stressors or various traumas occur, everyone has the ability to find meaningful solutions. I believe that everyone is unique, so the solution will be different for each person. My desire is to assist clients (ages 10-90), including adolescents, adults and couples, find a balance between a healthy need for relationship and possible psychological, social or spiritual factors within a framework of personal responsibility. After teaching English and Art for 23 years, I experienced the power of expressive arts to unlock inner voices that help students/clients achieve hope and confidence.

Do you feel stuck in patterns you can’t seem to break—whether that’s substance use, intense emotions, or ways of coping that don’t work anymore? You might know what you want to change, but not understand why it keeps happening. That’s where we start. I work with individuals navigating trauma, addiction, and emotional overwhelm. I understand that substance use often develops as a way to cope—with pain, stress, or experiences that haven’t been fully processed. In therapy, we won’t just focus on stopping behaviors—we’ll work to understand what’s underneath them so real, lasting change becomes possible.

Life situations can often burden us leaving us feeling overwhelmed and hopeless which can contribute to increased anxiety and disturbance in sleeping patterns. My specialty revolves around individual and family systems therapy which includes a unique approach to couples therapy (marriage counseling), life transitions, children, adolesecents and family of origin issues. Through my continuing post graduate training I have developed a behavioral, relational, and psychdynamic psychotheraputic approach to assist in allivating these patterns by enhancing communication styles, negotiating skills and problem solving techniques.

Investing in your healing is a powerful step, and I'm so glad you're here. I work with folks struggling with OCD, anxiety, and intrusive thoughts. My clients are often stuck in cycles of overthinking, reassurance-seeking, or avoidance, and feel exhausted by how much mental energy it takes just to get through the day. They come to therapy feeling frustrated and overwhelmed, wanting relief, but also wanting to understand their thought patterns and how to break the cycle. Using evidence-based treatments and a person-centered approach, I help clients gradually face what they fear, step out of unhelpful patterns, and learn self-trust

FAQ - About Therapy for Seniors
Is one ever too old for mental health therapy?
Individuals of all ages can benefit from mental health therapy. Indeed, older adults in particular may benefit from the social and psychological support a therapist can provide; the topics that older adults address in therapy may simply differ from those of younger clients. Seniors should seek out a therapist who has experience working with older individuals and who is well-versed in addressing common concerns among elderly individuals, such as depression, anxiety, loneliness, and physical mobility challenges.

How is counseling for seniors and the elderly different from counseling for other age groups?
In general, counseling offers an opportunity for clients to process difficult life events and develop coping skills they can use outside of the therapy session. Therapists who specialize in working with elderly clients generally have the same framework but may place a special emphasis on specific topics, such as caregiver relationships and reducing loneliness. They may be specially equipped to deal with certain physical conditions or facilitate discussion surrounding end-of-life topics. Counseling for the elderly may also place a greater emphasis on social work-type topics to ensure that geriatric clients have access to necessary resources, such as food, a safe home environment, and healthcare.

How can therapy improve the quality of life of aging individuals?
Therapy for aging adults can greatly improve quality of life by providing an opportunity for them to process difficult emotions related to end-of-life, navigate relational or caregiver challenges, and develop coping skills for common mental health conditions, like anxiety or depression. Subsequent reductions in negative emotions and mental health disorder symptoms can make day-to-day living much more manageable for aging adults and those that care for them. The ongoing relationship with a trusted therapist can also help seniors combat loneliness and provide a sense of structure for their routine.

What are the qualities to look for in therapists who see seniors?
Seniors counselors, like mental health counselors in general, should be kind, empathetic, skilled at listening, and knowledgeable about their particular area of expertise. Counselors specializing in working with the senior population should be very familiar with the aging process in general and the common conditions that the elderly can face, such as dementia, depression, loneliness, and/or physical illness. Many senior counselors are also well-equipped to help caregivers and families navigate the aging process of their loved ones, and they may draw on Interpersonal Therapy to help facilitate improved interactions between seniors and those that care for them.
