Note: During the CoronaVirus Crisis, I am offering online/telehealth sessions. Visit my website for details! I work with kids, adolescents, and adults, leading them to their "A-ha" moments. I make difficult concepts simple using humor, story-telling & analogies. I use Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) to address the thoughts, feelings, beliefs and actions which may be obstacles to getting where you would like to be. I also rely heavily on Positive Psychology , which uses a strength-based approach (rather than a focus on problems). When working with Traumatic events, I use Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR).

Problems are overbearing, we can never really catch a break. When we think we overcame a problem, there tends to be 2 more waiting in line to surprise us. I am a firm believer that every problem has a solution. It get tricky when the solution is not something we want to accept or consider. We need to see problems as opportunities for change. When we change our perspective and mindset on what problems truly are, our stress levels will decrease and our self confidence will increase. Like with anything, changing takes practice and patience. I am EMDR Trained and focus on trauma. Have you tried to talk to other therapists about unusual experiences connected with your trauma, grief, or unrelated situations? Have they dismissed your experiences because they did not understand what you were talking about? Perhaps you are unsure how to label your experience but know that it was special or even transformative. You are looking for improvement in your trauma symptoms, like anxiety, depression, behavioral issues, or relationship challenges, but you also want to better understand and integrate the experiences you had.

I have hope when working with people who are going through intense emotion such as of anger, anxiety, or depression. I'm optimistic when working with folks who experience this because I believe in strengths-based counseling, and I've witnessed many people grow their strength to be able to process those emotions. Though the emotion difficulties can be similar across people I work with, the reasons each person feels this way are unique, and I want to hear your story.

I am a bilingual therapist who works with adolescents, adults, families, and couples to process their unique experiences as well as explore personal and relational goals and values. My approach to therapy incorporates a space in which we collaboratively explore intersectionalities of lived experiences, which include but are not limited to intergenerational trauma within family systems (chosen/blood), community, culture, oppression, discrimination, and injustices. My belief is that those who come to therapy are the experts of their own lives and I honor the gifts and abilities that are already present as we work towards goals.

Positive Psychology Therapists

How does positive psychology therapy work?

Positive psychology therapy derives from the work of Martin Seligman of the University of Pennsylvania. He and others developed the field of positive psychology building on humanistic theory. Positive psychology therapy is similar to acceptance and commitment therapy, and it essentially quiets emotional distress through positivity, contentment, and well-being. This therapy does not reduce the individual to symptoms and conditions.

When do I know if I need treatment using positive psychology?

If an individual is overwhelmed by emotional distress and general negativity, they may feel trapped. A positive psychology therapist can help them view their emotions and behaviors differently, and approach life with a better understanding of their positive strengths. This therapy can provide an individual with the coping skills needed for a healthier and more constructive life.

What should I expect from positive psychology therapy?

The patient may be asked to explore their signature strengths. The therapist will also ask the individual to talk about their goals, which should be specific, measurable, achievable, realistic, and timely. Discussing negative experiences and symptoms is important, but so is the exploration of positive experiences. The objective is to identify and lessen negative thoughts and behaviors and move toward optimal health and productivity. The individual will see life in a more positive and fulfilling way. This therapy is proactive and may use forgiveness, gratitude, hope, and compassion to help reframe negativity.

Is positive psychology effective in therapy?

Positive psychology therapy is evidence-based and effective. One study found that people with eating disorders benefit from this type of intervention. This therapy encourages the person to reframe their distressed thoughts and move into healthier patterns of functioning. This therapy also aims to move an individual toward what works well in their life. Positive psychology therapy can elicit lifelong change, with higher levels of satisfaction, less stress, as well as positive emotional and behavioral habits.
