Going through difficult times in life does not have to be done alone. Change does not happen overnight. Sometimes, when we bring our concerns to others, they might be minimized and it can be hard to find someone to talk to. Having a safe space to openly communicate about our problems, learn about them, and overcome them can help. I am here to help you learn about you, what your needs are, what you want in your life, and empower you on your journey. I specialize in
LGBTQIA
+ issues, couples/relationships, depression, anxiety, grief, ADHD, and others.

A significant focus of my practice involves working with the
LGBTQIA
+ community.
Selecting the right therapist is a highly personal decision, one that’s often made in times of duress. With so many options, I encourage you to take the time you deserve to make an informed decision. During my career I have passionately worked with my clients to help them make positive changes, to develop their strengths, to be effective reaching personal and professional goals, and to feel happier overall.

My work is informed by mind-body connections,
queer
theory, and intersectionality.
I help adults, young adults, and older teens with unique identities navigate anxiety, life transitions, and redefine who they are - not just who other people want them to be. If you are exploring your identity as a 2SLGBTQ+ person, or as a a third culture kid or as part of an immigrant family, I can help support you on that journey. If you're reclaiming your sense of self as a recovering people-pleaser, high-achiever, or someone lost in toxic relationships - this is the place for you!

There is no manual for the
LGBTQ
experience. People in our community often find themselves having spent their childhood trying to stay safe, only to reach adulthood without the skills and relationships to have the fulfilling life they deserve. We often feel like we are spending our lives playing catch up, trying to reclaim our past while living out our present and future all at the same time.

I am especially passionate about working with the
LGBTQ
+ community, neurodivergence, body image & disordered eating, and trauma.
You deserve to love every single part of who you are. It's not always easy. Maybe it's been especially hard lately. Maybe there are past experiences that have damaged your sense of self-worth. Maybe you're suffocated by a society that tells you how you should look, behave, and love. Maybe you struggle with a sense of shame that makes it difficult to be radically, fully, unapologetically you. Somewhere along the way, you've gotten stuck. It's time to get unstuck. Let's figure this out together.

Some of my specialties include BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, & People of Color) identities & oppression;
LGBTQIA
+ affirming care; relationship concerns; shame & self-compassion; fat phobia & acceptance; group psychotherapy; individual psychotherapy.
Are you looking for an inclusive and culturally conscious therapist? Many of the concerns that clients bring up in therapy often involve challenges related to their identities (e.g., race/ethnicity, gender, sexuality, body size, etc.) and/or moving through a world that oppresses them. When describing their previous experiences in therapy, many clients have expressed things to me like, “my therapist just didn’t get me", and as a result, have been unintentionally harmed by assumptions or comments made by previous therapists. As part of my practice, it’s important to me that I hold a deep respect for your worldview and experiences.

LGBTQIA

I am currently accepting new clients and have weekend availability! There are many reasons as to why individuals seek guidance through therapy. Some may be attempting to adjust to sudden life changes, while others may wish to self-explore and embrace therapy as a form of self-care. As your therapist my goal is to continuously collaborate with you on your journey so that your self-identified goals are met. I strive to foster a therapeutic environment which welcomes all and serves as a catalyst for change. With you at the drivers seat, together we will identify your strengths and skills so that you can be the best version of yourself.

I am a
queer
Chicanx therapist and have been learning and teaching mental wellness for 20 years - - it isn’t typical in my culture and generation to look outward for healing. Many of us didn’t realize that we were experiencing shame, guilt, sadness, oppression, or feelings of inadequacy. For some of us this surfaced as young adults and for others, it will never be acknowledged. When I dreamed up the concept of Velasquez House of Healing, I knew it would be designed for this time and place, where we are awakening to our inner wisdom and search for identity, purpose, and ancestral resilience.

Do you appreciate a warm and friendly but direct approach when handling challenges? If so, I may be the counselor for you. I take a person-centered and existential approach to counseling - aspiring to help clients find meaning and direction in their lives and relationships. While I have a special passion for working with the underserved
LGBTQ
population, I also specialize in working with a diverse group of individuals from all walks of life, at different stages in their lives.
Deciding to take that first step to better yourself and change your life is tough when you are afraid the person you have chosen to help you just may not be able to or even understand your needs. As your therapist, I recognize wholeheartedly how important that first step is. Together, one of our focuses initially is building confidence, comfort, and rapport with each other, so that as we walk together through your issues, you can feel good about doing so. We will develop a plan of care specifically for your individual needs rather using than one specific method based on “identifying markers".

How can I find a therapist in San Antonio?
Search for nearby therapists or counselors by inputting your city, town, or suburb; or zip code; or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or zip code into the search bar.

Is online therapy a good option?
Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.
What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?
Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.
What type of therapist is right for me?
Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist, psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.
Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?
The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors. Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.
What type of therapy is right for me?
The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.
Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?
Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.
