Do you feel disconnected from yourself or others, struggle with a critical inner voice, or notice these patterns showing up in your relationships—feeling misunderstood, overly responsible for others’ emotions, or afraid of being truly seen? Past trauma, anxiety, and depression can shape how we see ourselves and relate to others, quietly convincing us we must be “just right” to be valued or loved. You may feel stuck in these cycles, yet still hold hope that change is possible—wanting greater emotional safety, authenticity, and connection within yourself and in your most important relationships.

Licensed in WA, IL, and TX, I provide a safe, inclusive space for navigating life’s transitions. Often, what brings people to my practice is feeling stuck in overwhelming patterns, whether that looks like distressing intrusive thoughts, a nervous system trapped in a high-alert trauma loop, or the exhausting identity shifts of early parenthood. I frequently work with individuals exploring their identity, seeking gender-affirming care, or looking to reclaim power that grief or trauma has taken. I am Mexican American, an LGBTQ+ advocate, and inclusive to all in my practice.

My ideal client is someone who feels stuck between who they are and who they want to be. Maybe they’re carrying anxiety that won’t quiet down, old trauma that still echoes, or a pattern of people-pleasing that leaves them drained. They want clarity, confidence, and peace — not perfection, just the ability to breathe easier and feel more like themselves again.

We all want a harmonious and peaceful connection with our love ones. Sometimes we find ourselves at an impasse with our partners, children, friends, or co-workers. These impasses act as barriers that keep our relationships from growing or moving forward. Counseling /therapy gives a person the opportunity to see a "barrier" from a different perspective while acquiring new skills to move through the barrier or eliminating the barrier it self. Many times our underline intentions are good ones but our solutions to a problem may become barriers themselves. We may just need a different perspective or create a new way of behaving.

The worry seems to never stop, not when the day is over, not when the problem is solved, and not even when things are going well. You notice yourself overthinking conversations, running through possible scenarios in your head, and worry about all of the "what-ifs." You have a constant sense that something needs your attention, leaving you feeling irritable and on edge. You find yourself seeking reassurance, double-checking decisions, or thinking through every possible outcome so you don't get caught off guard; yet, all of that planning still doesn't bring relief. If anxiety has been running the show, there's a way forward.

My name is Rocio Portales, M.S., LPC. I work with many different issues/concerns in therapy. My preferred therapeutic approaches are Solution Focused, Mindfulness, and Cognitive Behavioral. Overall, I work at the client's pace and according to your needs session by session. I consider myself to be soft-spoken yet straightforward with my clients. Of course, I am aware that not everyone will like that so I will accommodate according to client needs. I describe myself as a therapist who likes to check in with the client to ensure that they feel comfortable with the way therapy is being conducted.

FAQ - Therapist Gender
Does it matter what gender my therapist is?
In general, there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or because they feel more comfortable with a therapist of their own gender due to shared life experiences or perspectives. Considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender may matter or improve their therapeutic experience. The most important consideration is that a client is able to build a trusting relationship with their therapist.

Should I see a female therapist?
Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist. For women, this could be because they believe that they will be able to better connect with a woman, and that a female therapist will be able to relate to their specific challenges and personal issues. It may be particularly beneficial for women to see a female therapist, for example, for gender-specific issues, such as sexism in the workplace, relationship issues, and gender roles. The most important factor in therapy is the client-therapist connection, and a therapist's gender as well as many other factors may play an important role in this.

Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?
Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.

How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?
It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
