I am a holistic, empathic, client centered counselor with multiple methods to assist folks in recovery from issues that have affected their ability to function in wholeness. My therapy styles include Energy work, clinical hypnotherapy, EMDR, experiential and talk therapy. I support and endorse alternative healing methods along with counseling and I do not believe that medication is always the right choice for everyone. The overarching attributes that I use with my clients are authenticity, thinking outside the box, insight, candor, and humor.

Following a traumatic experience, most of us are encouraged - through the world or those we trust - to toughen up and move on. However, despite our best efforts, the effects of this experience leak out at the most inopportune times. For some, this might look like sabotaging yourself or your relationships, using a substance in order to remain numb, or becoming so plagued with reminders of this experience you feel that you cannot think of anything else. In addition, you might have a set of feelings or symptoms that seem to be connected but you have difficulty naming. When you try to discuss these with loved ones, you are dismissed.

I enjoy taking more of a holistic approach and getting to the root causes. Everything we do in life, from the people with whom we surround ourselves to the foods we consume, effects our mental health. Things from our past continue to have a significant impact on us as long as it remains undealt with and tucked away, but life does not have to be this way.

Accepting new clients. I work with women over forty who are struggling to heal from the trauma of ongoing abuse, whether past or present, from parents, caregivers, a partner, or a spouse. Healing from the severe aftereffects of relational abuse takes time and often feels elusive leading to feelings of brokenness. I bring my whole self to the work of healing from relational abuse, including my personal experience, intuition, and education, creating a safe space for connection and collaboration, so that you may begin to know that you are not broken, and healing is possible.

Hi there! I'm Ashley. I'm a therapist in Texas offering teletherapy. I am passionate about providing trauma-informed, culturally competent mental health care to clients of all identities. I specialize in treating addiction, trauma, PTSD/cPTSD, first responder trauma, and dissociative disorders. Often my clients feel stuck in their symptoms, which hold them back from enjoying comfort in their daily lives. These symptoms could include panic attacks, dissociative episodes, feeling disconnected from others, or waves of sadness, all of which can lead to unhealthy self-medication.

Human problems and suffering reside with every society and have proved to be ageless. In accepting the reality of the pain and suffering one needs commitment to explore the gamut of human experiences and emerge ready to carry on with some healing and hope for tomorrow. With EMDR therapy the primary goal is to leave you with the emotions, understanding, and perspectives that will lead to healthy and useful behaviors and interactions.

If we are to live into our potential and experience lives that are meaningful to us, it is helpful to gain insight into where we feel blocked and what needs to happen to move us closer to our authentic self. As a psychotherapist and certified psychoanalyst, I can often help you on this journey. There are many reasons why we seek individual or couple therapy. Understanding ourselves better seems to be reason enough. But for some this decision comes when we are at a particularly difficult moment in life--a death, divorce, relationship concerns, retirement or any situation which may constellate strong feelings.

Life is a constant process of change-and sometimes that change can seem so overwhelming that we may feel too stuck to move. I work with individuals who recognize that growth is needed; however, the fear of change can make us compare ourselves to others, silence us from saying what our heart needs to say, stop us from growing, and imprison us with the "what ifs". My job is to help you find your inner strength and voice to grow, break unhealthy habits, reach goals, and recover from the pain of your past.

Sometimes it’s difficult for individuals who have experienced a tragic event or challenging childhood, to come to terms with it as adults. Unresolved issues can originate from the past, and somehow manifest through certain behavior. As a therapist I believe collaborating with the client is important so that we can explore the issues together. Gaining insight is beneficial for a client to understand the root cause of the behavior.

My training as a healer began with my own in-depth psychotherapy. Subsequently, I have worked with adults, teens and kids in the areas of substance and sexual abuse, depression and anxiety, fear and grief. I attended a six months professional training program in DreamTending at Pacifica Graduate Institute where I deepened my understanding of archetypal medicine and indigenous methods of healing through the use of dreams and all that surrounds us in the natural world. My approach is holistic, helping my clients integrate mind, body and spirit.

Dissociative Disorders (DID) Therapists

How does therapy for dissociative disorders work?

Dissociation may be triggered by stress or other upsetting circumstances, and therapy can address the traumatic events at the core of an individual’s dissociation. Understanding why a person may dissociate can help the therapist and the individual come up with alternative methods of coping. A person with a dissociative disorder may get stuck on negative thinking, for example, and treatment like cognitive behavioral therapy is a gold standard for breaking such thinking. And dialectical behavior therapy, for example, can help a person manage their anguish through better emotion regulation.

Which therapies are best for dissociative disorders?

Specific approaches used by professionals include cognitive behavioral, dialectical behavior, psychodynamic, schema therapies, among others. Cognitive behavioral and dialectical behavior therapies are two widely used therapies that can help individuals with painful memories and past traumas. These therapies work to integrate an individual's different identities into one person.

Are there specific medications for dissociation?

There are no specific medications prescribed for dissociative disorders. However, psychosis, depression, anxiety, and/or panic often co-occur in dissociative disorders. A psychiatrist may prescribe medications for any accompanying symptom—which may include antipsychotics like aripiprazole, antidepressants like selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, or anti-anxiety drugs like benzodiazepines.

How often and how long are therapy sessions?

Like any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual. Patients may see improvement within 15 to 20 sessions, at an average of 50 minutes per session, others may opt for 20 to 30 sessions over, perhaps, a six-month period. There are still other patients, especially those who have co-occurring conditions like depression and anxiety, who may need to continue sessions for up to 12 to 18 months.
