The COVID-19 pandemic has brought social isolation, fear about our health and financial worry. Although you may be trying to cope with COVID-19, you may feel anxious, sad, angry or irritable, have difficulty sleeping, trouble concentrating, changes in appetite, or struggle to engage in daily routines. If these symptoms continue for 2 weeks, it is time to seek help. Hoping symptoms of depression and anxiety will just go away without treatment can result in worsening of symptoms. I am experienced in working with adults with growing up issues, adjustments, current and past trauma, loss, life transitions and

Life is a journey comprised of various relationships which are often challenged by change. Changes in relationships are often overwhelming and cause stress, anxiety, quilt, grief, or trauma. The diagnosis of a life-limiting illness, a death, being the caregiver for someone with a
chronic illness
, dealing with end-of-life issues, or divorce at times is overwhelming and frustrating. During these experiences, it is important to have someone who will listen to understand your experience. I have training and experience in companioning those who are navigating a stressful time in a relationship changed by loss or illness.

The world can be a tough place for neurodivergent folks. ADHD, autism,
chronic illness
, trauma, disability and mental health struggles can sometimes make meeting your own basic, everyday needs feel exhausting. Keeping up with the responsibilities and demands of life might leave you feeling overwhelmed, stuck, ashamed, lonely or embarrassed. Other people don't seem to understand why it's so hard for you and sometimes neither do you! You have so many strengths, but it feels like they're buried under layers of self-doubt, frustration and burnout. You're not broken. Your needs are different. You deserve support. We SO get it.

I work with PTSD for Veterans,
chronic illness
, and grief and loss.
I know finding a good fit for a therapist is hard. And finding a good fit is critical to finding relief and healing. Feeling alone in the trauma, the grief and loss, the overwhelm, and just feeling stuck. It's exhausting, lonely, and I know you're sick of it by now. You get to have some guidance, laughs, and expertise as you go to your sessions, work on YOU outside of sessions, and start feeling more whole again. As for working with me and what it's like? I've been told I'm warm and humorous (usually at my own expense). I see you as the expert and me as the guide, and I will put you at ease right off the bat.

We provide supportive psychotherapy for patients with a serious illness or injury, who now live with chronic pain and impairment. It is not unusual to experience problems with stress, depression, and anxiety after a medical crisis, and to become isolated from the flow of life. You will be given an individual therapist to support you and help you learn about the specific skills, attitudes, and behaviors that help you slowly but steadily "push back" and regain quality of life.

I offer an invitation to a safe, supportive, and engaging space that is dedicated to your self-understanding, growth, and wellbeing. There are certain lines of thought and emotion that are difficult to work through alone, or in our family and friend relationships, but which need to be thought and felt in order to free up aspects of ourselves that have gotten stuck: aspects like our sense of ourselves as the authors of our own lives, our curiosity, our creativity, our sense of ourselves as worthy and lovable.

Chronic Illness Therapists
How does therapy for chronic illness work?
Many people living with a chronic illness may feel they cannot speak honestly about their experience out of embarrassment or fear of being a burden, or because those close to them do not understand, for example, that they may “look good” even if they do not feel good. Therapy sessions are an opportunity to speak openly with someone who knows their symptoms are not in their head and who can offer practical, proven suggestions for managing feelings of grief, shame, or fatigue, such as techniques to challenge unhelpful thoughts about symptoms and develop new ways to respond to them, such as distraction or calming breathing practices.
Can therapy help with physical symptoms of chronic illness?
Yes, especially if an individual with chronic illness has developed depression. People with depression are less likely to maintain their health treatment regimens or to take positive steps to manage physical symptoms when they arise, thereby potentially complicating their medical prognosis. Treatment of depression, through talk therapy, medication, or both, will often improve one’s physical state as it eases the emotional burden of illness.
What are the most effective treatment options for chronic illness?
No one living with a chronic illness, or their loved ones, should see depression as an unavoidable result of their condition. Instead, they should actively seek treatment. Research shows that people with depression are less likely to devote the required time and effort to maintaining or monitoring their health, and so therapy to limit the risk of depression can be vital for physical health as well. Therapeutic approaches such as cognitive behavioral therapy and mindfulness-based stress reduction have been found to help individuals reduce stress and anxiety.
How long does therapy for chronic illness take?
There is no set timeline for therapy for people living with chronic illnesses, but many will see a therapist for a number of weeks or months, typically spanning at least 12 weekly sessions. Some people feel that they experience progress faster than others but even some who quickly feel improvement may continue with sessions for months or years. Some people may benefit from maintenance therapy if their symptoms change or they experience a decline in physical health. Others find that the skills learned in short-term therapy can be used on an ongoing basis, even after therapy has concluded.
