I practice Cognitive Processing Therapy for PTSD and
Attachment-Based
Therapy for relational issues.
Trauma and stress can impact us in ways that are difficult to understand at first. You know that you’re experiencing distress, but you can’t put your finger on exactly why. You’ve been through some really hard things, but you’ve always pushed through. Grin and bear it, right? That only works for so long.

With couples, I use Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), employing
attachment-based
interventions.
I strive to create a therapeutic environment where you feel comfortable expressing whatever is on your mind without fear of judgment. I believe that you are the expert in your own healing, and I will work collaboratively with you to identify and reach your treatment goals. I use strengths- based approaches while incorporating evidence based methods, including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) to stimulate the brain’s natural ability to heal and address problems stemming from trauma. I also employ mindfulness techniques to cultivate calm, balance, and insight.

In-person sessions are available! Aren’t you tired of reading profiles? Well, hello there; I'm Shaun, supervised by Abbey Pelosi, LCSW-S, CST! Finding a therapist can be challenging; it took me almost a year to find the person I felt comfortable with enough to be my therapist. I looked through profile after profile, and they all gave me the same basic information; what type of therapy they practiced, where they went to school, and how long they've been working. They had great resumes, but all I wanted to know was who they were as a person. Am I able to trust this person with my deepest secrets? Do we vibe? Do we connect?

In my therapy approach, we will explore the ways you are thinking about yourself, and then determine how that may be causing your emotional, and behavioral, suffering. It's important for any client to understand that all past unresolved emotional wounds and trauma experiences disconnect us from our True Self, our true Identity. By sharing your story in a safe environment, you can learn the compassion & understanding necessary help resolve your dysfunctional coping symptoms, and bring about the natural healing process for recovering from the unconscious reasons past wounds have kept your Mental Health stuck in repetitive suffering.

Welcome! My name is Amber Johnson-Bryant, LCSW and my practice is called Discover You Therapy, PLLC. I provide psychotherapy services to TX residents via virtual sessions. It's not an easy thing to realize you need help. Oftentimes, as a society, we feel we're "weak" when seeking assistance. We tell ourselves to "be strong" and "figure it out". What happens though when this is no longer effective? Sometimes, we need outside intervention because life gets chaotic, complex and confusing. When this happens, it's not only ok but completely normal as this is a part of the human experience. After all, we aren't robots!

Attachment-based Therapists
Is attachment-based therapy the same as attachment therapy?
Attachment-based therapy may be confused with what is called “attachment therapy” (sometimes called “holding therapy”), a discredited and dangerous approach to treating children with attachment disorders, autism, or other mental health concerns. Attachment therapy—not attachment-based therapy—may involve restraining a child, forcing eye contact, and other coercive or abusive techniques. None of these practices are used in attachment-based therapy and the two modalities are in no way related.
What should I expect from attachment-based therapy?
Attachment-based therapy is based on attachment theory, which posits that children’s early relationships with their caregivers strongly influence their ability to navigate the world later in life. Thus, adults who seek attachment-based therapy should expect to deeply explore their childhood, identifying the dynamics or experiences that disrupted their attachment and the steps necessary to overcome challenges that arose as a result. Parents and children should expect to explore the possible factors that disrupted the parent-child relationship and work toward restoring trust and connection.
How long does attachment-based therapy last?
Certain forms of attachment-based therapy, especially those designed for parents and children, last for a set number of sessions; for example, Attachment and Biobehavioral Catch-Up, a specific attachment-based approach for young children who have undergone early adversity, unfolds over 10 one-hour sessions. When attachment-based therapy is practiced on adults or combined with other modalities, it may not last a specific length of time; clients may wish to ask prospective therapists how long they expect treatment to take.
Does attachment-based therapy work?
Most of the research on attachment-based therapy focuses on children and adolescents. Some of this research shows a positive effect, especially for attachment-based family therapy (ABFT). Other studies, however, have found that attachment-based therapy is no more effective than other approaches to childhood depression, anxiety, or suicidality. Less is known about the therapy’s efficacy on adult populations.
