We all need help. Whether it may be learning how to make healthy decisions, reducing anxiety , controlling impulses, learning to assertively communicate or to reduce depressive symptoms. Understanding ourselves, defining our wants and needs can be important in making life-changing choices. In therapy, the goal is to meet you where you are at in life and collaboratively move towards obtaining your goals. Many times we expect immediate results without having to make any internal changes; leaving us unfulfilled, sad and anxious. The changes begin within ourselves to see desired responses from others.

I also see adult men and women with problems such as anxiety and depression, substance use, marital conflict and anger-control disorders.
I am not currently accepting new clients. I do welcome child and adult clients with whom I've previously worked. With 44 years of experience, I help people rally their strengths to overcome problems in living which have diminished their success and happiness. A practical, results-oriented psychologist, I believe that when people feel safe and free from criticism they are most able to see new solutions to their difficulties and to try new behaviors. I believe a counseling relationship is most effective when it includes empathy, humor, frank and straightforward discussion and, occasionally, no-nonsense confrontation.

I have always been amazed by nature’s resilience to revive itself when adversity creates setbacks and its capability to thrive even in harsh conditions. Nature possesses the critical balance of the many elements necessary for sustainability. As humans, we also have the capacity to overcome setbacks. I often work with individuals who suffer from various problems, such as anxiety , depression, insomnia, stress, or even adjustment to living with a chronic illness. They are often looking for a way to find balance and move forward in their lives.

It's always difficult asking for help to overcome problems in your life. It's common for people to feel like they are stuck & getting help with pulling yourself out of that rut is one of the best things you can do. As your psychologist, we will first spend time understanding each other, the situation, and then devise a plan of action to help you accomplish your goals. Then, we will work to develop & hone a set of strategies & skills, based on scientific research, that will help you to create the life that you want. Along the way we will trouble shoot, enhance, and customize your treatment to who you are & your history as a person.

Over the years, my clinical experiences have varied from anxiety , anger, and depression TO life transitions with school or grief/loss TO dual diagnoses and psychosis.
Life doesn’t always follow a smooth path. The trail can be littered with weeds and divots. Maybe a steep cliff is up ahead or there was a rockslide miles back. It’s not always easy to navigate the journey, which is where flashlights and gear can help. The counseling process isn’t someone telling you where to go or what to do, rather, another sojourner sharing tools, perspective, and a listening ear. My hope is for you to build on your own unique strengths in order to gain confidence to continue the journey. If you're looking for a safe space to address life's challenges, I would be honored to come along side you in that process.

Anxiety Therapists

What are the most common treatments for anxiety?

Talk therapy, particularly cognitive behavioral therapy, is the most common treatment for anxiety. Studies have shown it is equally effective as medication. Other popular forms of therapy are popular, depending on a patient’s experience. Exposure therapy, for instance, can be useful for people dealing with fears and phobias, or who have experienced traumatic events. Dialectical Behavioral Therapy may be useful for patients who need help with emotion regulation. Anxiolytic medications, like benzodiazepines, can also help with calming a person enough to focus on the skills they’ve learned, and physical exercise has been shown to help symptoms of anxiety across the board.

How long does therapy for anxiety take to work?

The amount of time needed to alleviate symptoms depends on the severity of a person’s condition. Some therapies may take 5-20 weekly sessions to show results. Anti-depressant medications typically take two to four weeks before a benefit is felt. Anti-anxiety medications are felt typically within 20-30 minutes. Medications are best used to offer a patient a better headspace in which to work on techniques learned in therapy. Exercise, improved sleep habits, and meditation are effective, but takes weeks or months to show results.

When should I seek treatment for anxiety?

Everyone feels anxious at times, but when anxiety causes disruption to your daily life, it may be time to seek help. Such disruption can be mental, physical, or both: having fear dominate your thoughts, avoiding situations or objects that bring on feelings of anxiety, or experiencing shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, or panic attacks. When these symptoms are recurrent and distressing, it may be time to talk to someone.

How effective is treatment for anxiety?

Treatment for anxiety has been shown to be moderately to highly effective, according to a large body of psychology studies and analyses. For some people, treatment using CBT or exposure therapy alone is effective. Others respond best to a combination of medication and therapy.
