I specialize in women's issues, substance and
alcohol use
issues, & navigating emotional disturbances in order to find peace.
Availability M-F 9am-2pm, I am also willing to accommodate some evening appointments upon request. Hello & welcome! I believe that we should prioritize our mental health just as much as we do for our physical health. It is very easy to keep trudging along without taking the time to feel our feelings or process our emotions. In therapy, I provide a non-judgmental space to explore past and present feelings and situations. Therapy is not one size fits all and it’s important to find skills and techniques that will help you reach your individual goals. I approach therapy with warmth, compassion, authenticity, and my own lived experience.

Dealing with addiction can be very difficult and overwhelming to deal with alone. Addiction doesn't look the same for everyone but anyone can overcome addiction. Drug abuse and addiction problems can be devastating, not only to the individual but to the family as well. Knowing that you are not alone is the first step to ease your mind. Everyone with an addiction problem has their own story that should be individualized not judged but heard. Identifying the biological, environmental, behavioral, and social causes and consequences of drug use and addiction is just some of the steps that we will face together.

If you or someone you love are having problems related to alcohol or drug use, there is hope and a way out. It is most useful to meet with someone who truly understands addiction and can provide a true assessment. I will work with you, your family and any other healthcare providers to develop a plan of action based on your needs. Often times the road to recovery starts with meeting someone who listens to understand, meets you with genuine care and concern and can provide useful recommendations. Chemical dependency is a primary illness not a secondary mental health issue; trust a counselor who entered this specialty field.

I've been a therapist for over 40 years and thoroughly enjoy my work. I understand the personal nature of therapy and the difficulty it takes to ask for help when already feeling overwhelmed and vulnerable. I appreciate the responsibility and privilege given me when invited to join you in discussing personal and even painful issues. I'll listen, assume nothing, judge nothing, impose nothing and try to find a solution as individual and personal as your dilemma, as quickly as possible.

Just as sometimes people get sick and need to visit a doctor, sometimes people need to visit a therapist. This could be due to a clinical diagnosis such as depression or anxiety, or just in response to the many and varied challenges of life. It takes courage and determination to reach out for help, and I hope that I can help. I believe we all have the ability to achieve lasting change and peace on our own, we just sometimes need help finding the way.

I entered the field of counseling because of a desire to help those in crisis or who are experiencing difficulties in their lives. I realized I wanted to be a counselor while working at a local community college. I saw students who were struggling academically but were very bright. I came to understand that there are many factors that go into being successful at life. I have always had a helping nature but didn’t fully understand why people behaved they way they did. Through my education and experience I can now help people in their personal lives, relationships and careers.

I have experience working with individuals, families, & couples, but most of my experience is in working with teenagers. I utilize different theories and techniques, and work to develop age appropriate treatment plans, objectives, and goals in order to help the individual and their family to overcome their difficulties, and reach their optimal potential. In working with children, I utilize play therapy, which allows for children to use their natural language of play to express themselves, and to work through their problems. Let's work together towards your future! E-mail me today at annawongtherapy@gmail.com.

Alcohol Use Therapists
Are there specific medications for alcohol use?
There are oral medications approved to treat alcohol use disorder—such as disulfiram, acamprosate, and naltrexone, which also comes in an injectable form. These medications do help people reduce their drinking as well as avoid the problem of relapse. Naltrexone helps reduce cravings, disulfiram can make a person feel sick when they drink, and acamprosate may help ease symptoms like poor sleep and anxious feelings.
How do alcohol recovery or rehabilitation programs work?
In inpatient programs, individuals live in a facility with other patients in recovery; in outpatient programs, individuals live at home. These facilities are staffed with healthcare professionals including physicians, nurses, psychologists, counselors, and psychotherapists. Staff can also include people who have recovered themselves, serving as mentors and guides. These programs may use abstinence, harm reduction, detoxification, psychotherapy, and other tools for recovery.
How do 12-step programs combined with psychotherapy work?
Members of 12-step programs help each other reach abstinence and work to maintain it. These programs promote complete change in the individual’s emotional, mental, physical, and even spiritual perspectives. Some programs require that new members attend 90 meetings in 90 days. Many people do attend these programs in conjunction with their work in psychotherapy; the combination of therapy along with 12-step can be extremely effective.
How does harm reduction combined with psychotherapy work?
According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, harm reduction prevents death, injury, disease, overdose, and substance misuse. People who choose harm reduction for alcohol use reduce the amount of alcohol they intake. It is not abstinence-based like a 12-step program, but combining harm reduction with psychotherapy proves to be effective for many people.
