When we experience trauma or severe life stressors, it is common to feel like our lives are unravelling. My greatest passion as a black female therapist is bringing understanding and healing to those who have been through a traumatic/stressful experience or struggle with chronic mental/developmental health challenges. I want to be a breath of fresh air for my therapy clients in Texas! My approach is interactive, warm, and accepting. I cultivate a therapeutic environment that makes my clients feel safe, heard, and understood so they can begin their therapeutic journey of finding peace, healing, and new beginnings.

I am a Licensed Master's Social Worker, Black therapist, Air force veteran who profoundly cares about life experience. I graduated with a Master’s in Social Work from Our Lady of the Lake University. I want to meet people where they are at in their journey and explore where they want to be. I hold space to take time to dive deep into what makes up your authentic self. I work from a person-centered framework. I am also aware no two people are the same. I want to take my time to explore what you need. Being vulnerable is the biggest hurdle when you are seeing a therapist.

Some of my specialties include BIPOC ( Black , Indigenous, & People of Color) identities & oppression; LGBTQIA+ affirming care; relationship concerns; shame & self-compassion; fat phobia & acceptance; group psychotherapy; individual psychotherapy.
Are you looking for an inclusive and culturally conscious therapist? Many of the concerns that clients bring up in therapy often involve challenges related to their identities (e.g., race/ethnicity, gender, sexuality, body size, etc.) and/or moving through a world that oppresses them. When describing their previous experiences in therapy, many clients have expressed things to me like, “my therapist just didn’t get me", and as a result, have been unintentionally harmed by assumptions or comments made by previous therapists. As part of my practice, it’s important to me that I hold a deep respect for your worldview and experiences.

Resilience. Perseverance. Transparency. Verline Gaddis is a female, African American LCSW who not only embodies these impactful traits but uses them as tools to help other women rise above their own circumstances and commit to standing boldly and unapologetically in their own perfectly imperfect truth. She is no stranger to struggle and has first-hand knowledge on how to turn trials to triumph. Uncensored and resourceful yet caring and empathetic, she now seeks to serve women like the woman she used to be; women starting over, struggling with motherhood, or the “CEO of Everything” and taking care of everyone but themselves.

What stories have others told you about yourself? What scripts do you believe about yourself and act out? It's been said, "be very careful of the stories you tell about yourself and that others tell about you because, eventually, they'll live" through you. Narratives are powerful ways to give meaning to our experiences and provide a framework for action. An unhelpful narrative can constrain choice, obscure options, and hinder growth, making the problems in your life feel insurmountable. It becomes crucial to examine the stories we choose and the power we give them.

I have learned that this life journey can consist of many twists and turns, and it can be overwhelming trying to approach things alone. Sometimes those difficulties can be emotionally taxing, disrupt balance, and trigger past experiences we have endured. Even things that seem simple can create hardships, and reveal some of the unhealthy coping behaviors we use to deal with them. I want to partner with you to help unpack the things that keep you stuck, and face those challenges effectively.

The truth is that therapy is for EVERYbody. It’s a safe space to process trauma, share feelings, celebrate even the smallest wins, and work through the losses. I'm excited to embark on this journey with you.

After years in education as a college professor, middle school teacher, and principal, my joy is working with adolescents and young adults, but I also enjoy couple’s work. My ideal client is reflective and purposeful. My clients are typically adolescents navigating anxiety and depression, young adults transitioning to careers and learning to “adult”, adoptees of all ages discovering their identities and processing trauma, and couples seeking a more connected relationship. I support my clients through reflection, trauma processing, self-discovery, and identity development so that they can embrace mental clarity live purposefully.

There are times when it feels like our past won’t allow us to move forward. The inner critic, that negative voice, we hear on the inside, won’t seem to allow us to escape the guilt, shame, or trauma from our past. Making it impossible to make peace with the past we desperately desire to be freed from. These feelings create thoughts that we are not good enough & rob us of having joy, confidence, happiness, and healthy relationships.

"Courage doesn't happen when you have all the answers. It happens when you are ready to face the questions you have been avoiding your whole life" ---Shannon L. Alder. It takes bravery to open up your heart, mind, and soul to someone in an effort to discover, confront, change or embrace what is inside. I hope to be the person that can join you on your journey of self-discovery and advancement. As a therapist, I help my clients realize their strengths and utilize them to reach their personal goals. I want to help you do the same.

As you scroll through the many options for counseling, it can be stressful. Seeking counseling can be intimidating and scary, but it is sign of strength and courage. It is never easy admitting you need help. Most of us yoyo between the past and the future, giving very little thought to the present. I believe counseling is a way of reconnecting to the part of us that has been lost in relationships, responsibilities, unexpected changes, and things we have yet to heal from. I am a proud Air Force veteran and a mother. I have years of experience working with those who need someone who really sees them.

How can I find a therapist in San Antonio?

Search for nearby therapists or counselors by inputting your city, town, or suburb; or zip code; or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or zip code into the search bar.

Learn more about how to find a therapist.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online or over the phone can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the United States, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

What type of therapist is right for me?

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist, psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors. Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.
