I am accepting new clients, though I am semi-retired. My days in the office are Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. With 49 years of experience, I help people rally their strengths to overcome problems in living which have diminished their success and happiness. A practical, results-oriented psychologist, I believe that when people feel safe and free from criticism they are most able to see new solutions to their difficulties and to try new behaviors. I believe a counseling relationship is most effective when it includes empathy, humor, frank and straight-forward discussion and, occasionally, no-nonsense confrontation.

I am a clinical psychologist who has a wide range of experience working in a variety of professional settings and with diverse populations. I also work with a variety of couples who are considering the next step (i.e., moving in together, open relationship, marriage) or having issues in their relationship and want to improve their relationship or considering breaking up/separation/divorce.

You knew parenting would be hard but never guessed it would look like this. Caring for kids who struggle is exhausting and isolating. Maybe you adopted and now you’re living in a house ruled by trauma. Maybe your child has special needs and you are wading through grief. You absolutely love your kids but your own struggles are making it hard to show that. Now you’re ready to put on your own oxygen mask and get some help for yourself. You’re ready to start healing and face the parenting trauma you’ve walked through. Most of all, you’re ready to find peace inside yourself so you can show up for your kids in a way that you’re proud of.

I love serving clients who are ready to take their first steps—for themselves. That might look like a woman who’s overwhelmed by parenting while trying to carry the weight of the world, someone battling the stories anxiety has etched into their mind, or a person ready to scream their truth but finding only a whisper escapes. I feel honored to meet you where you are, to sit with you, and to carry your story for a while as you move through your journey.

We believe in a therapeutic process that revolves around life's changes and the journeys it takes us on. Choosing a change of focus is a powerful way of transforming any situation. Focusing on the positive doesn't mean that we are denying reality or avoiding what isn't working. It simply allows us to work from a grounded place in order to make the most informed decision from a less emotional place of clarity. Within our sessions, the goal is to cultivate a trusting and collaborative therapeutic relationship where an individual can bring their full self into session without any fear.

Adoption Therapists
Does my adopted child need therapy?
Not every adopted child needs therapy. However, many can benefit from seeing an adoption-informed therapist, especially if they were victims of abuse or neglect, appear withdrawn or disconnected, have behavioral or developmental issues (which may or may not be related to their adoption), are struggling with feelings of grief or loss surrounding their birth parents, or find it difficult to establish an identity, a challenge that often becomes most apparent during adolescence.
When should adoptive parents seek therapy?
Prospective parents can benefit from therapy even before an adoption—for example, to voice worries and fears; to reconcile infertility struggles, if relevant; or simply to prepare themselves for parenthood. After the adoption, parents who are struggling to bond with their child; are unsure how to talk about adoption or related issues, such as race; or whose child is dealing with developmental, behavioral, or psychiatric concerns can address these and other issues with the help of an adoption-competent therapist.
Is family therapy appropriate for adoptive families?
Family therapy can be invaluable for strengthening the bond between adoptive parents and children, helping the latter feel more secure in their place in the family. Family therapy can also help adoptive families navigate complex communication issues—for example, parents who feel uncomfortable discussing race with their child, who in turn feels invalidated by their silence, or a child who has questions about his birth parents but avoids asking them out of fear of hurting his adoptive parents’ feelings.
What therapy is not appropriate for adoption issues?
A discredited therapy known as “attachment therapy” (sometimes called “holding therapy” or “rebirthing therapy”) should not be used to treat adopted and foster children, though it was largely designed for this population. Attachment therapy involves restraining, coercing, and punishing the child in order for them to “release” negative emotions and attach to their new caregivers—techniques that are abusive and dangerous and have even proven fatal in some cases.
